Report - EU bans broadcast of Iranian TV channels on Hot Bird (Eutelsat) - Press TV
European satellite provider Eutelsat SA says it has stopped the broadcast of several Iranian satellite channels following an order by the European Commission, Press TV reports.
The company ordered media services company, Arqiva, to take the Iranian satellite channels off one of its Hot Bird frequencies on Monday.
In a separate statement emailed to Press TV, Arqiva said that the decision was made by the EU Council.
"We terminated the contracts because it was the order of the European Commission. We have to follow it," Karen Badalov, area management of Eutelsat SA told Press TV.
Meanwhile, Head of Public Relations of Arqiva, Gary Follows, told Press TV that as a result of reinforced EU Council sanctions and repeated requests by France's broadcasting authority for the permanent switch-off of Sahar 1, which is broadcast in the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) multiplex, the IRIB broadcasts through Eutelsat Hot Bird have been terminated.
The Iranian channels being taken off the air include Press TV, al-Alam, Jam-e-Jam 1 and 2, Sahar 1 and 2, Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, Quran TV, and the Arabic-language al-Kawthar.
The decision follows months of jamming of Iranian channels by European satellite companies.
Observers believe that the European Union does not respect freedom of speech, and spares no efforts to silence the voice of alternative media outlets.
Iran's Arabic-language news channel, al-Alam, has been jammed on a daily basis while airing a program on Bahrain.
Technical experts say the jamming was carried out by British technicians.
Iranian news channels affected by the decision only aimed to break the West's monopoly on news broadcast by reflecting the voice of the oppressed people to the world.
The illegal move by Eutelsat SA, therefore, is a step to mute all alternative news outlets representing the voice of the voiceless.

Phoenix Satellite Television: The Art of Broadcasting in China (Showreel)
In presenting its family of channels as the Chinese TV viewers' window to the world, Phoenix was able to capitalise on ambiguities in China's regulatory environment to target news programming at mainland Chinese viewers. The Volume explores how the company needs to grapple with the challenges brought about by the convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting, the further liberalisation of China's media industry, and the gradual roll-out of digital TV networks around the country. The case study shows how these firms are using their entrenched competitive position at home to expand into global market. The video features the CEO and other senior managers discussing their firm's operations, culture and strategic outlook. The viewers will get a close look at the inner workings of the executive suite and the role it plays in formulating and executing the firm's strategy. Educators will also have access to accompanying teaching notes, which highlight specific teaching and learning objectives guiding each case.

TV Broadcasting and Its Development in DPRK
(The People's Korea)The development history of TV broadcasting in the DPRK is not so long. TV broadcasting was referred to the first time on September 1953, just after the Korean War. The war wreaked havoc on the whole country. In that situation, all people concentrated their energies on the postwar rehabilitation and construction of the country.
At the same time, Kim Il Sung expounded a view on developing TV broadcasting in the DPRK. The people then started to open up a new era of TV broadcasting. Of course, the work was not smooth. Owing to the adverse consequences of the war, capital and materials were not sufficient. There were too many bottlenecks and difficulties.
However, the people achieved great success in the spirit of self-reliance and hard work, and after eight years of trial and errors, they were able to make a broadcasting test for the first time in September 1961. Through the test they eliminated the insufficiencies and upgraded their editing and technical ability.
At last, the Central TV Broadcasting System of the DPRK was established and the DPRK started formal broadcasting on March 3, 1963.
The establishment of the Central TV Broadcasting System strengthened the publishing and broadcasting industries of the DPRK and marked an epochal event in the cultural life of the people.
After the start of TV broadcasting, the work to telecast live programs spread briskly. Thus, finally they succeeded in carrying live the whole proceedings of the 5 th Congress of the WPK, held in October 1970. This success in live broadcasting opened a new way to spread TV throughout the country.
They intensified the work to provide equipment such as studio recording cameras and cars for broadcasts relaying. As a result of the work of construction of television relay towers all over the country, the televisionizing of the whole country was accomplished in the early 1970s.
Then, they promoted modernization of TV broadcasting positively and built up the material and technical foundations for TV broadcasting in various kinds.
On this basis, the Kaesong TV Broadcasting Station opened in April 1971 (reorganized into the Korea TV Broadcasting Station for Education and Culture in February 1997), Mansudae TV Broadcasting Station in December 1973, while color TV broadcasting started in April 1974.
Today, North Korea's TV broadcasting stations provided with modern equipment and means broadcast programs with diverse content on different subjects.
The Korea Central Broadcasting System offers news reports, programs on politics, economic affairs, education, culture and at the same time provides "programs for the agricultural working people" and on popular contests such as "National Workers' song contests" and "Korean wrestling matches."
The Korea TV Broadcasting Station for Education and Culture give various information needed in people's practical life. These information programs help workers to raise their knowledge levels of science, technology and culture and cultivate their sprits of national identity and patriotism.
Mansudae TV Broadcasting give culture and art programs mainly- various programs such as foreign films, international sports, information on current international affairs and development trends in technology.
The Central Broadcasting System of the DPRK broadcasts 5 and a half hours (17:00 -- 22:30) usually, and 13 and a half hour (9:00 -- 22:30) on Sundays.
The Korea TV Broadcasting Station for Korean Education and Culture broadcasts 7 hours (15:00 -- 22:00) on Saturdays, and 10 hours (12:00 -- 22:00) on Sundays.
The Mansudae TV Broadcasting Station broadcasts 3 hours (19:00 -- 22:00) on Saturdays, and 9 hours (10:00 -- 13:00, 16:00 -- 22:00) on Sundays.
On important national holidays, the broadcasting time of each station is the same as on Sundays.
The DPRK started relay reception by a communication satellite in October 1999.
Its color television follows the PAL system with 625 scanning lines.
40th anniversary of TV Broadcasting Service of DPRK marked
Pyongyang, March 4 (KCNA) -- A meeting was held at the People's Palace of Culture yesterday to mark the 40th anniversary of the TV Broadcasting Service of the DPRK. The TV Broadcasting Service was established on March 3, Juche 52 (1963).
Secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea Jong Ha Chol read out a congratulatory message from the WPK Central Committee on the occasion at the meeting.
The message highly praised the staff of the service for having rendered great services for firmly protecting our idea, system and cause and carrying out the revolutionary cause of Juche over the last 40 years.
It expressed firm belief that its staff would effectively use the party-provided pens, mikes and cameras as weapons of the revolution under any circumstances, true to the army-based leadership of Kim Jong Il, and make the proud and legitimate voices of socialist Korea more loudly resound through the whole world and thus live up to the profound trust and expectation of the party with loyalty.
A report was made by Cha Sung Su, chairman of the Radio and TV Broadcasting Committee of the DPRK.

Our World
Our World was the first live, international, satellite television production, which was broadcast on 25 June 1967. Creative artists, including opera singer Maria Callas, The Beatles and painter Pablo Picasso, representing nineteen different nations were invited to perform or appear in separate segments featuring their respective countries. The two-and-half-hour event had the largest television audience ever up to that date: an estimated 400 million people around the globe watched the broadcast. Today, it is most famous for the segment from the United Kingdom starring The Beatles. They sang their specially composed song "All You Need Is Love" to close the broadcast.
The project was conceived by BBC producer Aubrey Singer. It was transferred to the European Broadcasting Union, but the master control room for the broadcast was still at the BBC in London. The satellites used were Intelsat I (Early Bird), Intelsat II and ATS-1.
It took ten months to bring everything together. One hitch was the sudden pull-out of the Eastern bloc countries headed by the Soviet Union in the week leading up to the broadcast. Apparently it was a protest at the Western nations' response to the Six Day War.
The ground rules included that no politicians or heads of state could participate in the broadcast. In addition, everything had to be 'live', so no use of videotape or film was permitted. Ten thousand technicians, producers, and interpreters took part in this massive broadcast. Each country would have its own announcers, due to language issues, and interpreters would voice-over the original sound when not in a country's native language. In the end 14 countries participated in the production that was transmitted to 31 countries with an estimated audience between 400 to 700 million people.
The opening credits were accompanied by the Our World theme sung in 22 different languages by the Vienna Boys Choir.
Canada's CBC Television had Marshall McLuhan being interviewed in a Toronto television control room. At 7:17 pm GMT, the show switched to the United States' segment about the Glassboro, New Jersey, conference between American president Lyndon Johnson and Soviet premier Alexei Kosygin; since Our World insisted that no politicians be shown, only the house where the conference was being held was televised. National Educational Television's (NET) Dick McCutcheon ended up talking about the impact of the new television technology on a global scale.
The show switched back to Canada at 7:18 pm GMT. Segments that were beamed worldwide were from a Ghost Lake, Alberta ranch, showing a rancher, and his cutting horse, cutting out a herd of cattle. The last Canadian segment was from Kitsilano Beach, located in Vancouver, British Columbia's Point Grey district at 7:19 pm GMT.
At 7:20 pm GMT, the program shifted continents to Asia, with Tokyo, Japan being the next segment. It was 4:20 a.m. local time and NHK showed the construction of the Tokyo Subway system.
The equator was crossed for the first time in the program when it switched to the Australian contribution, which was at 5:22 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST). This was the most technically complicated point in the broadcast, as both the Japanese and Australian satellite ground stations had to reverse their actions: Tokyo had to go from transmit mode to receive mode, while Melbourne had to switch from receive to transmit mode. The segment dealt with Trams leaving the Hanna Street Depot in Melbourne with Australian Broadcasting Commission's Brian King explaining that sunrise was many hours away as it was winter there. A scientific segment, later on in the broadcast, was also included that dealt with the Parkes Observatory tracking a deep space object.

Canon EOS C300 = Awesome
In early Fall 2011, I shot some footage with a pre-production model of the Canon EOS C300 for one week in NYC. I created an article and a video for Canon based on my experiences with the camera. The video is meant to poke fun at most camera test videos I've seen over the years. Canon, not thrilled with my sense of humor, does not credit or condone this video, but I think it shows a lot of the camera's strengths.
You can read my full article about the EOS C300 here: learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2011/c300_for_cinematographers.shtml
I believe that Canon made a beautiful camera that is sensible, reliable and portable in a way that I've always dreamed a camera could be. It prioritizes great skin tone and has higher ISO sensitivity than any other camera out there.
I know there's nothing I can say to change the minds of the RED fan club. For the rest of the skeptics, I think once you get your hands on it you'll understand how great this camera really is. Please buy this camera in January and go film some good skin tones in the dark. You'll love it.
Thanks go out to all my friends for helping me with this.
Read my Filmmaker Magazine interview about this video here: http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/news/2011/12/jonathan-yi-talks-about-the-canon-c300/
This video will be broadcast on all Virgin America flights during the months of February and March on Boing Boing TV!

Moviebox is a show from Megapix channel dedicated to movie news, which delivers interviews with stars and behind the scenes curiosities. For its new identity, playing with the handmade crafts graphic feel, we have simulated a small studio scenario where tiny narratives develop around good old movies clichés, representing a variety of film genres. The box always takes central place in the scenes, and besides being the channel’s symbol, works as a starting point for the construction of the Moviebox logo as well as the structure for the graphics inside the show. The final outcome is a strong identity that engages the audience in an amusing, playful way.
