Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake was formed due to the collapse of a massive volcano, when the magma chamber beneath was depleated. A small volcanic cone later grew within the caldera, known as Wizard Island. Over thousands of years, the snowmelt has filled the caldera with fresh water.

Crater Lake: Day to Night - Time Lapse
EOS 5DMark2 and 1DsMark3: night shots are 30-second exposures, ISO 3200 and 6400, 16mm lens. Still frames strung together using iMovie. See: www.danheller.com From afternoon to late night of one day, this time-lapse video of Crater Lake was shot on a splendid evening just as a crescent moon was setting, followed by a stunning view of the milky way passing over the lake. The light streaks are airplanes, and the bright star is Jupiter, which at this time is closest to the Earth, and is directly opposite the sun, making for its brightest presentation in centuries.

Deepest Lake In America Crater Lake Oregon HD
Song: Behold... Album: Native American Meditations Label: New World Music The Klamath tribe of Native Americans, who may have witnessed the collapse of Mount Mazama and the formation of Crater Lake, have long regarded the lake as a sacred site. Their legends tell of a battle between the sky god Skell and Llao, the god of the underworld. Mount Mazama was destroyed in the battle, creating Crater Lake. The Klamath people used Crater Lake in vision quests, which often involved climbing the caldera walls and other dangerous tasks. Those who were successful in such quests were often regarded as having more spiritual powers. The tribe still holds Crater Lake in high regard as a spiritual site. Crater Lake is located in Klamath County, approximately 60 miles (97 km) northwest of the county seat of Klamath Falls, and about 80 miles (130 km) northeast of the city of Medford. The lake is 5 by 6 miles (8 by 10 km) across with an average depth of 1148 feet (350 m). Its maximum depth has been measured at 1949 feet (594 m), which fluctuates slightly as the weather changes. This makes Crater Lake the deepest lake that is completely in the United States, the second deepest lake in North America, and the ninth deepest lake in the world (Lake Baikal is the deepest). Crater Lake is often cited as the seventh deepest lake in the world, but this ranking excludes Lake Vostok, which is situated under nearly 13000 feet (4000 m) of Antarctic ice, and the recent soundings of San Martín Lake, which ...

Crater Lake (Part 1)
Wednesday 5th Aug 2009 Up at 6ish (ug, 4 hrs sleep). Wind seemed to be around over the lake (I could hear it) even though I was in a sheltered spot. Went to the north rim and that simply confirmed there was quite a strong wind blowing over the lake. Went back to a more sheltered spot, and in getting the plane ready I found a loose wire. After resoldering the wind had gotten up again AG! Decided to try to fly down by the boat launch. Got down to the lauch about 9.20 and shortly after setting up.. AG, the horn that controlled the elevator was bust! Praise be for the joy of pre-flight checks. It was too late to go back up, fix the plane and get down again. Washed in the lake chilly but felt better for it afterwards. The place crawled (with people down at the launches). Back up by 10ish and inspected the damage. In the end I decided the best (or most reliable) fix would be to simply attach the control rod 2 notches up. That would make the elevator more sensitive, but it should be a reliable fix. Kipped in the car till 1ish, then moved on down the lake, but still too tired. Found a siding in the trees and kipped down there for another couple of hours (till 3ish). Stopped off at the rangers station to work out what the position on the forest fires to the North was (not an issue) and tried to hitch up with a geologist. They pointed me to a geology talk but when I got there, it turns out it happened a few hours earlier and in a different place. Meandering out of the park to the ...

I am a photographer from Portland, Oregon. I want to share the beautiful NW region through my eyes with time-lapse photography.
I choose to shoot locations that appeal to the way I would like to interpret the story of time. Here in the Pacific Northwest, there are endless opportunities to document the magnificence of the world around us. I have discovered that when time is the storyteller, a special kind of truth emerges.
Various locations include ...
Mt. Shuksan, Crater Lake, Mt. Bachelor, Mount St. Helens, Oregon's Badlands, Painted Hills, Cape Kiwanda, Mt. Hood, Lost lake, and Cannon Beach
I started this project in July 2011 and shot the final scene in August 2012. I took approximately 260,000 images. I used 6.3 TB of hard drive space.

Finding Oregon is the compilation of six months of timelapse photography across the state of Oregon, punctuated by a 1600 mile road trip in September. We've filmed the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, the Southwestern Coast, the Alvord Desert, Leslie Gulch, Blue Mountains, Crater Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Deschutes River, and more. We're proud to have touched all four corners of the state; however Oregon is the kind of place that the more you see, the more places there are to still discover.
The greatest challenge with this project was being in the right place at the right time. Night timelapse sequences particularly have an unexpected number of requirements to get the bright, stunning payoff. First, the moon should be around the New Moon phase (no moon) so as not to compete with outshining the stars, so that means we get about 5 days a month window. Next, weather must be cooperative with a dependable expectancy of cloudless skies. Here in Oregon, only the Summer months have good chance of clear skies, so only 1/4 of the year offers good chance of clear skies. So that means, we have three months in the year, with a 5 day window each month to plan with fingers crossed for epic star shooting conditions. That's only 15 days in a year. Then, you hope that something doesn't come up in regular life to pull you away to other obligations on those few days. It is a maddening challenge getting all the factors to line up to be in the right place at the right time. But, when it does happen- it is such a satisfying feeling!

Within Two Worlds
"Within Two Worlds depicts an alternate perspective by giving us the illusion of times movement, signifying a beginning and end within a world of constant contradiction. It appears you are traveling in the midst of a dream, half-sleeping, half-waking, and touching the arch connecting heaven and earth."
I discovered my passion for photography shortly after my mother’s passing while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) 3 years ago. This time-lapse video is my visual representation of how the night sky and landscapes co-exist within a world of contradictions. I hope this connection between heaven and earth inspires you to discover and create your own opportunities, to reach your rightful place within two worlds.
Please feel free to share #withintwoworlds! Special thanks to all for your continued support and encouragement.

Crater Lake Under the Stars
I got a last minute invite from Chip McAlpine to join him on his photo trip to Crater Lake National Park to shoot stars.
This was certainly a demanding trip in all aspects: before/during/after, financially, and relationships. But, damn, the results are one of my favorite so far from the years I've been shooting stars.
The timelapse motion in the video is made possible by using the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero dolly system. For more information about them visit:

Mt Pinatubo Crater Lake (used a Canon EOS 550D with 10-22mm lens)
This is the first ever vid (HD) I took using my 550D. Was using it with my 10-22mm lens when I realized I could better remember what the magnificent Mt Pinatubo crater lake looks like with ambient sound and feel of the movement of everything in my surroundings. Here goes! It's short but it sends the point across. One thing I noticed is the lack of wind sound reduction that's standard with my Lumix ZS3. mov compression is looking good. I was playing this clip a while ago from my PC and there was a jump after every second of video footage. WTF's with that?! The Mt Pinatubo trip we did this morning was amazing. Off road drive via 4x4, the lahar painted landscape, the Aeta Village, the terrain, the surprise at how the entire place near the crater is well maintained despite the absence of electricity, the courteous drivers and guides, the tour main man, the view, communion with nature, and great company all made this day something I'll remember for a long while.
