To the American mind there may be nothing more quintessentially Swedish than the leggy, blond supermodel.
But there's another Swedish model that inspires almost as much admiration—the Swedish economic model. With a generous welfare state and high living standards, Sweden seems to prove that socialism works. Much of the hope that swept Barack Obama into the White House rests on the belief that America could reach new heights under a regime of enlightened progressivism, that we could be more like the Swedes.
Not so fast, warns Stockholm University sociologist Charlotta Stern: "If an American told me that the US should be more like Sweden I would say I don't think it's possible." The United States can centralize its health care system and pass other laws that mimic Sweden's welfare state polices, says Stern, but it's impossible to replicate a culture that allows those policies to operate about as smoothly as possible. Swedish bureaucracies inspire trust, but their American counterparts (DMV, TSA, IRS) inspire punch lines, if not outrage.
But America could emulate some of the Swedish policies that don't require extensive bureaucracies. Take school vouchers. Teachers unions in America regard the idea as free-market radicalism, but families in Sweden enjoy universal school choice. Sweden adopted its famously progressive policies during the 1970s, but after years of sluggish economic growth the land of ABBA altered its course in the 1990s, adopting a host of free-market reforms, from deregulation to tax cuts.
Although much of the disco-era welfare state remains, economist Andreas Bergh credits the free market reforms with reviving his nation's economy. "Sweden is moving in the market economic direction," says Bergh, "but that does not mean America should be moving in the socialist direction."
What if the two nations continue on in different directions? Maybe some day when America is looking for a way to rejuvenate its economy, pundits will point to a different kind of Swedish model. One that increases individual choice and competition.
"Sweden—A Supermodel for America?" is produced by Daniel B. Klein, and written and produced by Ted Balaker, who also hosts. Shot by Jonathan Liberman and Henrik Devell, with additional production support by Zach Weissmueller and Sam Corcos and post production by Hawk Jensen and Austin Bragg. Special thanks to Niclas Berggren, Martin Borgs, Nils Karlson, and the Ratio Institute.
Approximately 6.00 long.

Full-length documentary produced by RATB in 2010 explaining the role of socialist Cuba in the world and the modern challenges it faces in its development amidst world capitalist crisis.
PRESS:
"An insightful and provocative study of major changes taking place in Cuba today. The Cuban economist interviewed explains things extremely well. Necessary viewing for all seeking to understand contemporary Cuba."
John Kirk - professor of Latin American Studies at Dalhousie University, Canada. He has published several books about Cuban international relations, history and culture. His most recent publication, co-authored with Professor Michael Erisman, 'Cuba's Medical Internationalism: Origins, Evolution and Goals', was published in 2009 by Palgrave Macmillan.
"A great little film with a lot of food for thought and a good corrective to all the anti-Cuban stuff in the media, the interviews are fascinating and say a lot about the difficulties the country continues to face... very interesting in terms of Cuban ideas of grassroots democracy and the problems of running an economy with a blockade."
Derek Wall - former Principal Speaker of the Green Party
(http://another-green-world.blogspot.com/2010/05/new-film-cuba-defending-socialism.html)
'This film was summed up by the quote " I thought when i went to Cuba I could say if it was socialist or capitalist; having been I now say its a society trying to build socialism". A very realistic appraisal of Cuba which has not airbrushed out the difficulties there.'

Film summary:
Cuba: Defending Socialism, Resisting Imperialism brings you voices from Cuba, a country fighting for social and economic justice, representing the aspirations of the poor and oppressed worldwide, building socialism in a capitalist world. The film demonstrates how vital Cuba is to the struggle for socialism in Britain and beyond. Featuring Cuban workers -- including a lawyer, economist, teacher and farmer -- this film explains how the Cuban people have set up their economy, constitution and social provision despite 50 years of imperialist attack, isolation and, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Special Period. Today it is a nation that not only provides its own people with world-class healthcare and education, but also sends medical assistance to every corner of the globe. Cuba is at the heart of the Latin American trade and cooperation bloc ALBA, which operates on the basis of solidarity and complementarity, not profit and exploitation. Cuba continues to build and deepen its socialist system and democracy despite the punitive US blockade and having to cope with the international capitalist crisis.
Meanwhile in Britain the political set-up makes a mockery of democracy: the working class is braced to pay for the economic crisis and Britain's military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to claim thousands of civilian lives. Members of Rock around the Blockade who visited Cuba in 2009 in the wake of the global crisis, explain why they defend the socialist alternative offered by Cuba, socialism being the only system that can provide for the human race and preserve the environment in the long-term.

Despite what we've been told, the Soviet Union wasn't actually a socialist or communist country. They definitely used the name, but their economy never made the transition away from capitalism.

Socialist Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders says America has a Immoral Economic System
The problem with Socialism is if you take profits away from a productive class and give it to a political kommissar class it kills production and leads to massive shortages, corruption, war, famine and death and mayhem. As illustrated by Obama's economic polices a socialist economy does not generate wealth. The only way to expand a socialist economy is through war, which is why communism had to be

How China Became Capitalist details the extraordinary, and often accidental, journey that China has taken over the past thirty years in transforming itself from a closed agrarian socialist economy to an indomitable force in the international arena.
The authors revitalize the debate around the development of the Chinese system through the use of primary sources. They persuasively argue that the reforms implemented by the Chinese leaders did not represent a concerted attempt to create a capitalist economy, but that the ideas from the West eventually culminated in a fundamental change to their socialist model, forming an accidental path to capitalism. Coase and Wang argue that the pragmatic approach of "seeking truth from fact" is in fact much more in line with Chinese culture.
How China Became Capitalist challenges the received wisdom about the future of the Chinese economy, arguing that while China has enormous potential for growth, this could be hampered by the leaders' propensity for control, both in terms of economics and their monopoly of ideas and power.

The rise of China - A booming economy

China's socialist market economy is the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP, and the world's largest economy by purchasing power parity according to the IMF, although China's National Bureau of Statistics rejects this claim.
Until 2015 China was the world's fastest-growing major economy, with growth rates averaging 10% over 30 years. Due to historical and political facts of China's developing economy, China's public sector accounts for more share in the national economy with the burgeoning private sector.
China is a global hub for manufacturing, and is the largest manufacturing economy in the world as well as the largest exporter of goods in the world.
China is also the world's fastest growing consumer market and second largest importer of goods in the world.China is a net importer of services products.
China is the largest trading nation in the world and plays a vital role in international trade, and has increasingly engaged in trade organizations and treaties in recent years. China became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001. China also has free trade agreements with several nations, including China–Australia Free Trade Agreement, China–South Korea Free Trade Agreement, ASEAN–China Free Trade Area, Switzerland and Pakistan.
On a per capita income basis, China ranked 77th by nominal GDP and 89th by GDP (PPP) in 2014, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The provinces in the coastal regions of China[30] tend to be more industrialized, while regions in the hinterland are less developed. As China's economic importance has grown, so has attention to the structure and health of the economy.
To avoid the long-term socioeconomic cost of environmental pollution in China, it has been suggested by Nicholas Stern and Fergus Green of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment that the economy of China be shifted to more advanced industrial development with high-tech, low carbon emissions with better allocation of national resources to innovation and R&D; for sustainable economic growth in order to reduce the impact of China's heavy industry. This is in accord with the planning goals of the central government.
Xi Jinping’s Chinese Dream is described as achieving the "Two 100s": the material goal of China becoming a "moderately well-off society" by 2021, the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, and the modernization goal of China becoming a fully developed nation by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic
The internationalization of the Chinese economy continues to affect the standardized economic forecast officially launched in China by the Purchasing Managers Index in 2005. At the start of the 2010s, China became the sole Asian nation to have a GDP (PPP) above the $10-trillion mark (along with the United States and the European Union). As China's economy grows, so does China's Renminbi, which undergoes the process needed for its internationalization. The economy of China has recently initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in 2015.
China has been criticized by Western media for unfair trade practices, including artificial currency devaluation, intellectual property theft, protectionism, and local favoritism due to one-party oligopoly by the Communist Party of China with Socialism with Chinese characteristics.
As of 2015 there was talk of a "slowing" Chinese economy, but that referred to a slowing of the rate of economic growth, not to a recession. The slowdown manifested in industrial regions as excess capacity in basic industries such as steel and cement, in the auto industry as reduced sales
China's unequal transportation system—combined with important differences in the availability of natural and human resources and in industrial infrastructure—has produced significant variations in the regional economies of China.
Economic development has generally been more rapid in coastal provinces than in the interior, and there are large disparities in per capita income between regions. The three wealthiest regions are along the southeast coast, centred on the Pearl River Delta; along the east coast, centred on the Lower Yangtze River; and near the Bohai Gulf, in the Beijing–Tianjin–Liaoning region. It is the rapid development of these areas that is expected to have the most significant effect on the Asian regional economy as a whole, and Chinese government policy is designed to remove the obstacles to accelerated growth in these wealthier regions.

WOW ARE BERNIE SUPPORTERS STUPID.
Bernie’s preferred method of generating revenue for the government is taxation. Boosting taxes beyond perhaps an optimal level, hurts the economy.
Throughout his life, Bernie Sanders has been working for socialism, the transitional stage of society before communism. He calls himself a socialist, specifically a “democratic socialist.”
While Sanders has made a mountain of campaign promises that are socialistic in nature, the words he uses betray that his end-goal is actually communism.
To people like Bernie sanders, the economy is a plaything, a living entity that can be made subservient to government. Operating on the same assumption, communist countries created bureaucratically administered “command economies” and millions of their subjects starved. The Soviet Union, which was supposed to live forever, disintegrated after just 74 years and all but a few communist countries followed it into the dustbin of history. Nazi Germany’s command economy didn’t save it either; the “Thousand Year Reich” perished after just 12 years.
Bernie’s first lie is that he is democratic. He specifically describes himself as a “democratic socialist,” as if the word democratic somehow makes his belief in socialism more noble. Left-wingers like Sanders play word games, misusing the word democratic deliberately and constantly. If they win, it is a triumph of democracy. If they lose, democracy has been betrayed, greedy capitalists rigged the election, the system is broken, and so on.

Spring 2011, Econ 373 UMass- Amherst
The course is divided into four (unequal) parts. Part I focuses on how socialism and communism have been understood within the Marxian, worker self-management, and utopian traditions. Part II turns to a particular kind of class analysis differentiating capitalism from socialism and communism. The class theory of socialism, communism and capitalism developed in Part II is then used in III to answer the question: what was the USSR across its history in relation to capitalism, socialism, and communism? Part IV ends the course with an exploration of the implications of the answer provided for the USSR for other socialist experiments across the 20th century, particularly China, and possibly new revolutionary movements in the 21st century as well.

The problem with Socialism is if you take profits away from a productive class and give it to a political kommissar class it kills production and leads to massive shortages, corruption, war, famine and death and mayhem. As illustrated by Obama's economic polices a socialist economy does not generate wealth. The only way to expand a socialist economy is through war, which is why communism had to be contained. A free market economic system is the most fair and efficient way to distribute wealth and resources.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls defied critics from left and right on Tuesday by declaring he would ram a flagship economic reform bill through parliament by decree, bypassing backbench rebels but exposing his government to a no-confidence vote.
The package, which includes rules to broaden trading hours and deregulate some sectors, is aimed at spurring growth and persuading the European Commission to give Paris more time to get its public finances into line with EU rules.
Although the liberalising reforms are mild by the standards of many European countries, they sparked a revolt by dozens of back-bench lawmakers in the ruling Socialist party, putting the government’s majority in doubt.
It is the first time since 2006 that any government has used a constitutional mechanism to push through a bill without a vote, triggering complaints that the reformist Valls was being authoritarian and short-circuiting parliament.
““There is a possibility of a majority vote in favour of this bill, but it is not certain. It is then my responsibility, I will take no risks. I won’t be responsible for this bill being rejected. I consider it is crucial for our economy,” he told lawmakers minutes before the vote had been due.
“Nothing will make us give up, nothing will make us retreat – the national interest of the French people requires it.”
The main opposition party, ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservative UMP, immediately proposed a no-confidence motion, which will be debated with a vote in the next 48 hours, most likely on Thursday. If the motion fails, the decree is deemed to have been adopted.
“The government should win this confidence vote, since an absolute majority of lawmakers have to vote against the government for it to be toppled,” BNP economist Dominique Barbet said. The Socialists and their allies combined have an absolute majority in the 566-seat lower house.

Engineered Destruction of the Economy
-- Date: 09/14/2015 --
-Today -
On this Monday, September 14 edition of the Alex Jones Show, we look at the reasons behind the swamping of Europe with refugees, the twiddling of Congress while the economy circles the drain, and how a Federal Reserve mandated hike of interest rate would signal the beginning of a global debt crisis. We also look at the rise of Marxism and other socialist schemes as the economy implodes and the real plan in Syria as the U.S. avoids targeting ISIS.

FOUR HORSEMEN is an award winning independent feature documentary which lifts the lid on how the world really works.
As we will never return to 'business as usual' 23 international thinkers, government advisors and Wall Street money-men break their silence and explain how to establish a moral and just society.
FOUR HORSEMEN is free from mainstream media propaganda -- the film doesn't bash bankers, criticise politicians or get involved in conspiracy theories. It ignites the debate about how to usher a new economic paradigm into the world which would dramatically improve the quality of life for billions.
"It's Inside Job with bells on, and a frequently compelling thesis thanks to Ashcroft's crack team of talking heads -- economists, whistleblowers and Noam Chomsky, all talking with candour and clarity." - Total Film
"Four Horsemen is a breathtakingly composed jeremiad against the folly of Neo-classical economics and the threats it represents to all we should hold dear."
- Harold Crooks, The Corporation (Co-Director) Surviving Progress (Co-Director/Co-Writer)

Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright is a Czechoslovakian-born American politician and diplomat. She is the first woman to have become the United States Secretary of State. She was nominated by U.S. President Bill Clinton on December 5, 1996, and was unanimously confirmed by a U.S. Senate vote of 99–0. She was sworn in on January 23, 1997.
Albright currently serves as a professor of International Relations at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. She holds a PhD from Columbia University and numerous honorary degrees. In May 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Barack Obama.Secretary Albright also serves as a director on the board of the Council on Foreign Relations.
China's socialist market economy is the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP, and the world's largest economy by purchasing power parity according to the IMF;the accuracy of the IMF's report on China's purchasing power parity has since been questioned. It is the world's fastest-growing major economy, with growth rates averaging 10% over the past 30 years. Due to historical and political facts of China's developing economy, China's public sector accounts for more share in the national economy with the burgeoning private sector.

The dream of a socialist paradise in Cuba has soured. Unemployment has reached record levels, inequalities are increasing and the economy has nearly collapsed. Now people are starting to blame Castro.
A woman shows us around her decrepit home. For the past two years, she has been reduced to living in an abandoned cinema. “It leaks a lot and the top floor is also collapsing,” she complains. “The economic, political and social situation in Cuba really couldn’t get any worse,” states prominent dissenter Vladimiro Roca. Since September 11th the tourism dollars have stopped flowing and over a third of Cuba’s hotels have closed. “There’s still enormous fear in Cuba but people are starting to criticise the government,” comments Roca. The young are leading the assault, using music to voice their concerns. “You’re scared of change, you’re scared of one person. What’s happening Cuba?” raps Junior Clan. Under pressure to act, Castro has opened his arms to corporate America. “The United States has done a lot to develop agriculture and industry in the world,” he enthuses. For Oswaldo Paya, organiser of the Varela project which collected 11,000 signatories demanding change, it’s not enough. He now faces constant harassment from the security services but remains unrepentant. “We’re basically saying we don’t want to submit to fear any more.”
