Its native names include bharal, barhal, bharar and bharut in Hindi, na or sna in Ladakh, nabo in Spitian, naur in Nepali and na or gnao in Bhutan.

This medium-sized sheep is 115 to 165 cm (45 to 65 in) long along the head-and-body, with a tail of 10 to 20 cm (3.9 to 7.9 in). They stand 69 to 91 cm (27 to 36 in) high at the shoulder. Body mass can range from 35 to 75 kg (77 to 165 lb). Males are slightly larger than females. The short, dense coat is slate grey in colour, sometimes with a bluish sheen. The underparts and backs of the legs are white, while the chest and fronts of the legs are black. Separating the grey back and white belly is a charcoal colored stripe. The ears are small, and the bridge of the nose is dark. The horns are found in both sexes, and are ridged on the upper surface. In males, they grow upwards, then turn sideways and curve backwards, looking somewhat like an upside-down moustache. They may grow to a length of 80 cm (31 in). In females, the horns are much shorter and straighter, growing up to 20 cm (7.9 in) long.

Bharals grazing in high himalayan mountains of Ladakh, Kashmir, India.
The Bharal , also known as the Blue Sheep, is a high mountain sheep that is the primary prey of Snow Leopards. They have short coats and legs with robust chests and shoulder, and can weigh up to 75kg. Despite their cold weather adaptations, they thrive in all extremes, from hot deserts to cold mountains.
The Bharal feeds mostly on grasses and lichen. During the summer season they mostly spend their time in small groups but gather in valleys during winter seasons. They are usually found anywhere from 3,000 to 5,500m and will not enter forests because of their lack of camouflage. The blue sheen to their coats is important to their survival, by allowing them to “melt” against the dark blue rocks of the Himalayas. When approached they will often freeze in order as they are hard to spot when immobile. Once, they are noticed they will run up hills before freezing against the mountains again. They are also known to give alarm calls and stay near sharp cliffs that are inaccessible to predators.
Blue Sheep are often kept far from settlements because of their tendency to eat crops, but hunting and predations usually keep this from being a problem. In many Himalayan communities, bharals are considered trophy kills because they live in difficult and remote regions at high altitudes. There are programs that offer hunters a chance to hunt Bharals in the remote regions of Nepal. Because of Bharal’s strong populations numbers, the ecological impact this has is negligible.
