Tensions escalating on Korean Peninsula
As China calling for all sides to exercise calm and restraint, DPRK formally rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution on Saturday that demands an end to its nuclear arms programme.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are heating up. After a successful nuclear test in February, the DPRK has shocked the world by announcing it is pulling out of the Korean War Armistice Agreement, in response to planned US-South Korean military exercises. Wang Xinye takes a look at how China is facing the complicated situation.
Pyongyang has called the recent nuclear test a victory, but the international community has been quick to condemn it.
Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary-general, said "I strongly condemn Pyongyang's reckless act, which shows outright disregard for the repeated call of the international community to refrain from further provocative measures. The test is a clear and grave violation of the relevant resolutions of the Security Council."

한반도 정세안정, 중국역할 중요
Amid North Korea's continuing brinksmanship, experts are saying that China, Pyongyang's closest ally, can play an important role in resolving the current crisis.
This view is supported by China's recent support for sanctions against North Korea that were approved by the UN Security Council.
Park Ji-won reports.
The U.S. and China were the two main drafters of a resolution that authorized a new series of sanctions against North Korea for its third nuclear test at the UN Security Council last week, that was unanimously approval by the 15 Council members.
China had been reluctant to agree to sanctions on Pyongyang at the United Nations in the past however, this time, China didn't back up its long-time ally.
"Adoption of the resolution itself is not enough.
Adoption of the resolution is not for the sake of adoption, is not for the sake of the sanctions.
We want to see full implementation of the resolution."
China's Foreign Minister later said at a news conference on Saturday, that Beijing believes sanctions are not the fundamental way to resolve conflicts, and it won't abandon its relations with Pyongyang, despite its support for the UN sanctions.
However, if China fully joins the implementation of the newly-approved sanctions, North Korea will suffer a heavy blow, both economically and politically.
China, the number one trading parter of Pyongyang, accounts for some 60 percent of North Korea's international trade, and is its closest ally.
That's why China is believed to be able to play an integral role in maintenance of the peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, and South Korea's diplomacy with China will become more important than ever.
"South Korea can suggest a joint proposal, along with the U.S. and China towards North Korea.
We need to devise a creative proposal that can induce China into actively participating in the sanctions, in case North Korea refuses the plan."
Experts also say, the South Korean government needs to closely communicate and cooperate with the Chinese government, as well as the U.S., and the joint approach by the three countries to the North is paramount in resolving the current crisis.

한미, 키리졸브 연습 개시...북 "정전협정 백지화"
Despite threats of further provocations by North Korea, South Korean and U.S. troops kicked off their annual joint military drills, known as 'Key Resolve', on this Monday morning.
Pyongyang has reacted furiously to the exercise, and has scrapped the Armistice Agreement between the two Koreas and severed the cross-border hotline.
Hwang Sung-hee has the details.
This year's Key Resolve exercise, led by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, is aimed atimproving the prompt dispatch of military equipment and troops from the U.S. mainland to the Korean Peninsula in case of a war.
Around 10-thousand South Korean soldiers and 35-hundred U.S. troops will be taking part in the drills.
Washington is expected to mobilize an aircraft carrier, stealth fighter jets and strategic bombers.
The exercise is a computer simulation drill that tests real wartime scenarios.
The joint drills, however, have added fuel to already heightened inter-Korean tensions.
North Korea had warned last week it would no longer respect the Armistice Agreement between the two Koreas and would cut off the cross-border hotline if Seoul went ahead with the military exercise.
And just as promised, North Korea severed its emergency hotline with Seoul at the truce village of Panmunjom following the launch of the joint drills.
Seoul's Unification Ministry said a phone call made by a South Korean official at the cross-border station on Monday morning went unanswered by the North.
The two sides exchange calls twice every day through the hotline - at 9 a.m. and at 4 p.m., Korea time.
The North's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, meanwhile, declared the Armistice Agreement between the two Koreas scrapped as of Monday.
And as Pyongyang is also expected to carry out a large-scale military drill this week, Seoul's defense ministry says South Korean and U.S. forces have strengthened surveillance and combat readiness against any possible provocations by the North.

Rising tensions on Korean peninsula
South Korea says it will retaliate against any provocation by the North, after the North Korean army threatened an undefined "strike of justice".
Pyongyang's threats come as the United Nations considers tougher sanctions on the country as punishment for its third nuclear test last month.

북 외무성 "대북제재 전면 배격...핵은 '만능의 보검'
North Korea has upped the ante in its rhetoric against the international community this Saturday.
Pyongyang lashed out against the UN decision to slap it with tougher sanctions and unleashed a series of new threats.
Our Connie Lee has more in this story.
Adding to the already high-level of tension on the Korean Peninsula North Korea rejected the latest sanctions laid out by the United Nations, and again threatened the international community.
On Saturday an unidentified spokesperson from Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry released a statement through the nation's state media that said
"The DPRK (or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) strongly denounces and completely rejects the sanctions against it, which are a product of U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK."
Pyongyang accuses the UN of being "abused" by the U.S. who it claims is aiming at toppling the regime.
The latest rhetoric comes after the Security Council unanimously voted on Friday.. to impose new sanctions on North Korea following its third nuclear test, which was conducted three weeks ago.
The tougher sanctions adopted as Resolution 2094 will tighten financial restrictions and crack down on Pyongyang's attempts to transport illegal cargo.
Angered at the international response North Korea added it will ramp up its nuclear activity.. and vowed to take "stronger countermeasures."
Earlier North Korea had also threatened to sever its emergency hotline with Seoul and scrap the armistice that halted the Korean War in 1953.
South Korea's Unification Ministry is urging Pyongyang to pull back.
"North Korea should not make inter-Korean relations more difficult by nullifying agreements between the two Koreas, and they should clearly realize they cannot get anything with provocations or threats."
The United States also warned Pyongyang it will not achieve anything by repeating such threats and it will only further isolate the communist country.

"한미 군사훈련 중, 북 도발하면 전투 태세"
North Korea is threatening to scrap the armistice agreement if South Korea and the U.S. proceed with their
joint Key Resolve military exercise on Monday.
Seoul says if the communist regime takes aggressive action during the training period it is prepared to switch to combat readiness.
Arirang's Kim Hyun-bin reports.
North Korea has threatened to cancel the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War in 1953 in response to sanctions by the U.N Security Council and the scheduled holding of the joint military exercise Key Resolve by South Korea and the U.S. on Monday.
"If South Korea and U.S. continue their wartime practices on March 11th, we will completely nullify the armistice agreement."
Tensions are rising on the Korean peninsula with Pyongyang repeatedly threatening to start an all out war.
However the Key Resolve exercise will conduct ten days of a wartime computer simulation training exercise as planned.
This year's training is focused on improving the prompt dispatch of military equipment and troops from the U.S. mainland to South Korea in case of the outbreak of war.
There are over 10 thousand U.S. troops and over 200 thousand South Korean soldiers participating in this year's exercise.
For this year's exercise U.S. is expected to mobilize an aircraft carrier, stealth fighter jets, and strategic bombers.
"Key Resolve is a command post exercise, and Foal Eagle is conducted outdoors to test the mobilization of our troops to increase the personnel that will be dispatched."
This year's exercise will focus on how to fully utilize both U.S. and South Korean troops in a wartime situation.
South Korean military officials have emphasized that if North Korea is provocative in any way during the duration of the exercise, South Korea and the U.S. will switch to combat readiness.

North Korea Ends Armistice Agreement, Severs Communication With South
Follow up to my previous video regarding the same topic, North Korea's army declared invalid the armistice agreement that "ended" the Korean War in 1953.
NEWS ARTICLE VIA CNN
-----------------------------------
(CNN) -- A new joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States began Monday amid heightened tensions across the region.
The latest military drills involving the two allies are called Key Resolve and follow the Foal Eagle joint exercises that began March 1, which are scheduled to last two months. More than 3,000 U.S. forces are taking part in Key Resolve, according to United States Forces Korea.
The latest exercises fall under the shadow of North Korea's army declaring invalid the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War in 1953, an article in Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, reported Monday.
With the declaration, Pyongyang made good on its threat to nullify the armistice.
North Korea previously warned it could carry out strikes against the United States and South Korea.
Despite the strong language, analysts say North Korea is years away from having the technology necessary to mount a nuclear warhead on a missile and aim it accurately at a target.
And, analysts say, North Korea is unlikely to seek a direct military conflict with the United States, preferring instead to try to gain traction through threats and the buildup of its military deterrent.
In another sign of the crumbling relations, North Korea severed its hotline with Seoul, South Korea's unification ministry said Monday, according to the Yonhap news agency. The ministry said the North failed to answer two attempts to communicate by telephone at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time.
Military exercises a threat?
North Korea has called the annual training exercises "an open declaration of a war," but South Korea says it notified Pyongyang that the drills "are defensive in nature."
The United Nations Command notified the North Korean military on February 21 of the exercise dates, noting that Key Resolve is an annual joint exercise that is not related to current events on the Korean Peninsula.
The U.N. Security Council unanimously passed tougher sanctions against North Korea Thursday targeting the secretive nation's nuclear program, which followed successful missile and nuclear tests.

North Korea's third nuclear test and threats of military action are "completely unacceptable", U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in remarks published on Saturday, urging Pyongyang to feed its people and seek peace with South Korea.
North Korea threatened the United States on Thursday with a pre-emptive nuclear strike and has scrapped the armistice with Washington that ended hostilities in the 1950-53 Korean War.
That followed its third nuclear test on February 12, in defiance of U.N. resolutions, drawing further U.N. Security Council sanctions against the reclusive East Asian state.
Asked by Austria's Profil magazine about North Korea's nuclear test, military exercises and threats, Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, said: "I find this completely unacceptable and it is also a challenge for the international community."
He said in an interview with Profil that he had urged the North Korean leadership to focus on the welfare of its own people in the face of serious economic problems.
"There is a serious humanitarian crisis in North Korea. Many people suffer from malnutrition," he said, calling for dialogue and peaceful exchanges with South Korea.
"(South) Korea has just elected a new president. That would be good timing for the leadership of the two parties to the conflict to discuss seriously how to encourage national reconciliation and to reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula, also in view of a possible reunification of the country."
North Korea formally rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution on Saturday demanding an end to its nuclear arms program and China called for calm, saying sanctions were not the "fundamental" way to resolve tensions.
North Korea has vowed to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States, amplifying its threatening rhetoric hours before athe UN security council voted to impose new sanctions on Pyongyang for a recent nuclear test.
An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's foreign ministry said the North will exercise its right for "pre-emptive nuclear strikes on the headquarters of the aggressors" because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against it.
Although North Korea boasts of nuclear bombs and pre-emptive strikes, it is not thought to have mastered the ability to produce a warhead small enough to put on a missile capable of reaching the US. It is believed to have enough nuclear fuel, however, for a handful of cruder devices.
Such inflammatory rhetoric is common from North Korea, but it has been coming regularly in recent days. The Pyongyang regime is angry over the possible sanctions and over upcoming US-South Korean military drills.
At the UN in New York, the US-drafted resolution was approved unanimously by the 15-nation security council. It came after three weeks of negotiations between the US and China after North Korea's latest nuclear test on 12 February. "north korea" nuclear strike nuke test missile tv media news rights "nuclear attack" statement korean korea country enemy u.s. america american sanctions "united states" un "united nations" communist bomb warhead "world war 3" ww3 "world war" war future trends research anger 2013 citizens truth agenda "kim jong un" crazy "red dawn" movie unseen forces nwo "new world order" illuminati alex jones prediction iran china israel mw3 david icke lindsey williams bilderberg elite control west farrakhan gerald celente 829speedy
The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, a former South Korean foreign minister, said the resolution "sent an unequivocal message to [North Korea] that the international community will not tolerate its pursuit of nuclear weapons."
The resolution specifies some luxury items that North Korea's elite will not be allowed to import, such as yachts, racing cars, luxury automobiles and certain types of jewelry. This is to close a loophole that previously allowed countries to decide for themselves what constitutes a luxury good.
Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said: "The strength, breadth and severity of these sanctions will raise the cost to North Korea of its illicit nuclear program and further constrain its ability to finance and source materials and technology for its ballistic missile, conventional and nuclear weapons program,
"When North Korea tries to move money to pay for its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, countries must now block those transfers even if the money is being carried in suitcases full of bulk cash," she said.

Presidential call to unite Korean Peninsula
http://www.euronews.com/ South Korean President Lee Myung-bak gave his final New Years message in which he called on the country to rally behind the president elect. He believes that would be the first step towards easing tensions with North Korea leading eventually to a united Korean peninsula.
"While safeguarding peace on the Korean Peninsula with watertight security, I hope the quiet movement for change that started in the hearts and lives of North Korean people will turn into big waves overflowing with energy for the unification of the Korean Peninsula," he said.
Park Guen-hye will become the country's first female president when she takes office in February. Her mother was shot dead by a North Korean's assassin's bullet intended for her father the then president Park Chung-hee. How will that affect relationships with the North?
Tension was increased earlier this month after Pyongyang went ahead with a long range rocket launch which it insists was to put a satellite into orbit.
South Korea along with several other nations claimed the launch was cover for a banned ballistic missile test.

DJ Soulscape - The Sound of Seoul in New York
The postwar Korean peninsula was a melting pot for both Eastern and Western cultures. This interaction led the music business to grow significantly as clubs were founded around the U.S. military bases. Many musicians who played for the clubs had interpreted and localized rock, jazz, soul and boogaloo in various styles. However, such unique music was suppressed and vanished due to the political interest of the military regime in the mid ‘70s. Today, the music that once thrived during those periods remains discontinued and forgotten.
DJ Soulscape, a critically acclaimed musician and an avid vinyl collector, has spearheaded a project to uncover the lost archives of Korea’s musical past. The Sound of Seoul and More Sound of Seoul compilations were conceived to revisit lost Korean music of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
With the success of this series in Korea, Essentic in partnership with DJ Soulscape, have decided to coordinate several functions to introduce such unique vintage sound in conjunction to Soulscape's recent trip to New York City.

KBS Weather Graphics
We have carried out a project to improve the weather forecast graphics with the KBS news graphic division in 2011.
Based on preliminary study, we discovered that there was no single system on weather graphic designs of the news channels including the programs of the open air broadcasters. We decided on the style of icons and established a set of rule to design the information pages.
Accuracy is the key of weather reporting programs. We decided to show accuracy even from the design of a map. We checked the GPS information for the coastal lines of the Korean Peninsula and locations of major world cities and matched them with 3D data by forming a special team.

North Korea Predicted to Conduct Future Provocations After New Sanctions Imposed by U.N Security Council
북 강력반발 추가도발 예상
In the days leading up to the international community's latest measures, North Korea had threatened to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the U.S. and vowed to nullify the cease-fire agreement on the Korean Peninsula.
The world now waits for Pyongyang's response to the UN's latest resolution.
Kim Hyun-bin reports.
If history is any indication of how North Korea will respond to the latest round of sanctions, a provocation could be on the horizon.
After the UN Security Council strengthened sanctions on Pyongyang following its intercontinental ballistic missile test in December, the regime carried out its third nuclear test just 20 days later.
But what will they do this time around?
On Thursday, just hours before the UN approved a new round of sanctions on the North for its third nuclear test in mid-February, North Korea said it is prepared to conduct a pre-emptive nuclear strike against its aggressors.
In recent weeks, the regime has also warned of additional nuclear tests.
"If the U.S. keeps on creating a hostile environment, we will have no choice but to carry on with a sequence of nuclear tests."
The North has also said it would nullify the cease-fire agreement that effectively ended the Korean War, and threatened to turn Washington D.C. into a (quote) "sea of fire."
Referring to the U.S. capital as a direct target is rare.
Experts have varying opinions about what the North might do.
Given the North's recent threats, some say that Pyongyang could conduct a fourth nuclear test in April.
Others say the regime could plan some sort of military action during the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle joint military exercises in the South, which end in late April.
Officials from South Korea's defense ministry speculate that Pyongyang may be preparing to launch a series of short-range missiles sometime this month as a way to test the new Park Geun-hye administration.
On Thursday, the North's Korean Central News Agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had inspected several military bases on the inter-Korean border including the one responsible for shelling Yeonpyeong Island back in 2010 which could indicate that Pyongyang is indeed gearing up for a military action of some kind.
But as is always the case with North Korea, only a select few really know what's in the cards.
The only move for Seoul and the international community, at this point, is to stay alert and be prepared for any contingencies.

Dennis Rodman and North Korean despot
Recently American basketball Dennis Rodman and the Harlem Globetrotters visited The Hermit Kingdom, North Korea, north of the 38th parallel on the Korean peninsula. During this disgusting trip Mr. Rodman made nice with and played patty fingers with the thug monster leader of the North Korea: Kim Jong Un ("un" must stand for "uncivilized").
While Mr. Rodman was praising and schmoozing with Kim Jung Un, millions are starving in North Korea, and near 200,000 are being held as political prisoners.
Dennis Rodman and the Harlem Globetrotters are an embarrassment to the civilized world for visiting with Kim Jung Un -- resident monster of the Korean peninsula and planet earth.
The commie gangsters rule over a starving nation. That is what commies do, they starve their populace. Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union (USSR -- commie land) known as "Uncle Joe" by the adoring American news media was responsible for the death by starvation of around 30 million Russians.
Mao Zedong commie thug of The Middle Kingdom, commie-led China not to be outdone by "Uncle Joe," was also responsible for the death by starvation of around 30 million of his fellow countrymen.
When nations and charitable groups ship food to North Korea, the peasants do not get the food, the commies, their families, and the military get the food. The donating nations and charitable groups make no attempt to verify if the food is being distributed to the hungry.
Hungry North Korean women escaping cross the North Korean Chinese border into China. Once in China they are intercepted by brokers. These brokers then sell these hungry women into concubines, as house servants, or wives for men in China. Most of these women after being sold do not object as long as they are fed each day and escape the starvation and cruel life in North Korea.
