Hong Kong - Megacities - National Geographic Documentary
A peninsula bounded by more than 200 islands - only a handful of them inhabited, Hong Kong is the most densely populated urban region on the planet. In the recent past it has been rocked by economic and financial upheaval. Yet it has come through with some of the most high-tech, counterfeit-proof currency in the world, as well as some of the most complex bank building structures. Hong Kong has more billionaires per capita than anyplace on earth. This episode shows how such a small city accomplished such immense technological feats. The journey begins inside the printing facilities of Hong Kong Printing Limited and follows the currency to the Big 3 banks in Hong Kong, before it is then circulated through the economy.

Building Hong Kong's Airport - Extreme Engineering - 1x07
Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the main airport in Hong Kong. It is colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport (赤鱲角機場), being built on the island of Chek Lap Kok by land reclamation, and also to distinguish it from its predecessor, the closed Kai Tak Airport.
The airport opened for commercial operations in 1998, replacing Kai Tak, and is an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in Mainland China (with over 40 destinations) and the rest of Asia.
HKIA also operates one of the world's largest passenger terminal buildings (the largest when opened in 1998) and operates 24 hours a day. The airport is operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong and is the primary hub for Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Hong Kong Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways and Air Hong Kong (cargo). The airport is also one of the Asian-Pacific cargo hubs for UPS Airlines.[1] It is a focus city for many airlines, including China Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, which serves 18 flights to Hong Kong per day (one direction) from 15 cities. Virgin Atlantic, United and Air India use Hong Kong as a stopover point for flights respectively from London to Sydney, from Tokyo to Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City as well as from India to Osaka and Seoul.
HKIA is an important contributor to the Hong Kong economy, employing approximately 60,000 people. About 90 airlines operate flights from the airport to over 150 cities across the globe. In 2011 HKIA handled 53,314,213 passengers, making it the 10th busiest airport worldwide by passenger traffic.[3] It also surpassed Memphis International Airport to become the world's busiest airport by cargo traffic.[4]

The popularity of the Asian delicacy Shark Fin Soup is endangering the species. As evidence of this trend, conservationists have found thousands of shark fins on a rooftop in Hong Kong. Many are calling for tighter regulations to protect sharks. Al Jazeera's Rob McBride reports from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Sevens South Stand Fashion 2012 - HD
(HD) Wondering what to wear at this year's Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens? This quirky HD video shows you what the brave South Stand Warriors were wearing as they arrived on Saturday morning (at around 07:15) in 2012.
The South Stand at Hong Kong Stadium is where a lot of the non-rugby action takes place. It is most definitely not for the easily intimidated, and you have to be over 18 to enter, and once you leave you will need to queue up again (and that can take a very, very long time). The best time to arrive is early morning. The people in the video are arriving at the perfect time of 07:15, but even by 07:30/08:00 a queue begins to form and by 11 that queue is a snake of people waiting to get in. Once you are in the South Stand, there are lots of toilets, plenty to drink and a few food outlets as well, so really you don't need to leave at all. It is a lot of fun, and as you can see in the video quite a lot of people dress up for the occasion. This is after all, the biggest sporting event in Asia Pacific and the largest and best Rugby Sevens party in the world! Are you ready??!!!
There are many more HD videos from the Hong Kong Sevens in our YouTube channel and on the ASIATravelTips.com website.
ASIATravelTips.com will have a lot of coverage from the 2013 Hong Kong Rugby Sevens (22-24 March) so be sure to check back!

NOTE: We have intentionally speeded the movie footage up to show you more of the costumes. This of course blurs some of the details. The above footage is around 1 hour condensed into just over 10 minutes, and allows you to get an idea of some of the creative costumes on display during the 7s weekend. Thanks.

Chinese Leaders Want Loyalty if Hong Kong Gets Universal Suffrage
Comments by senior Chinese officials have prompted a debate in Hong Kong about the prospect of free elections in the region.
Hong Kong leaders are voted in by a body of influential groups and people. The Chinese regime does not technically have a role, but can influence the group.
On Friday, the deputy director from China's Central Liaison Office, Yin Xiaojing, said that future Hong Kong leaders, must "love the country and love Hong Kong."
This Hong Kong legislator says that really means Beijing would only accept a leader with allegiance to the Communist Party.
[Albert Ho, Member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong]:
"This kind of universal suffrage is false. It uses patriotic words and love of Hong Kong to define the standard. But it's empty. In fact, the so-called patriotism and love for Hong Kong is actually love of the Party. Hong Kong people have never loved the party."
In 2007 the Chinese regime agreed that Hong Kong citizens would have universal suffrage by 2017. But the implementation of that is a bit less clear.
On Thursday, senior Chinese leader Yu Zhensheng warned during the National People's Congress in Beijing that a true democratic election in Hong Kong could bring "subversive" forces into power.
[Albert Ho, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong]:
"Hong Kong people know clearly we long for freedom and democracy. As for dictatorship, especially the one-party's dictatorship in Mainland China, we have our strong opinions. How can it say that having different ideas means subversion?"
Hong Kong has operated under a policy of "one country, two systems" since it was returned to Chinese rule in 1997. The former British colony enjoys most of the same freedoms as those under democratic countries.
But there have been growing fears that this is changing.
Thousands of Hong Kong citizens took to the streets last summer to protest a national education program. They said the course was communist propaganda meant to brainwash Hong Kong students. The proposed education course was consequently canceled after multiple massive protests in the city's streets.

Yu Zhengsheng is a member of the standing committee
of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Politburo.
He is the incoming Chairman of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.
On March 6, when meeting with CPPCC members
from Hong Kong and Macao, he said that
if the person who wins Hong Kong's universal suffrage
in 2017 confronts the central government,
the outcome won't be good for Hong Kong and China.
So, the ruling force of Hong Kong must be the one that,
"loves China and loves Hong Kong."
Does Yu Zhengsheng mean that the CCP will control
Hong Kong's universal suffrage? Let's see the report.
In the meeting, Yu Zhengsheng said,
"Hong Kong can't subvert Mainland socialism."
He said there are some people who want to subvert
Hong Kong, who made irresponsible remarks in Mainland.
Yu Zhengsheng criticized these actions as unconstitutional
and illegal, and said a force with love for the country and love for Hong Kong is needed to govern.
Apple Daily published an article entitled, "Yu Zhengsheng
Took a Hard Stance to Threaten Hong Kong People."
It reported that when Yu Zhengsheng discussed
the conflict between Hong Kong and Mainland China,
he said demonstrators holding the flag of the colonial era
is an unhealthy trend influenced by evil,
and Mainland will not allow people to hold a flag of
the colonial era or ask for independence.
James To Kun-sun, Democratic Party member
of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, said that
Yu Zhengsheng called holding a colonial era's flag subversion,
so the items in the next 23 legislations may be tougher than the one in 2003.
Albert Ho Chun-yan, a lawyer member of the Legislative
Council of Hong Kong, told NTD that
based on the current situation, CCP's officials' words
show that they are ready to control the democratic system and universal suffrage of Hong Kong.
Albert Ho, member of the Legislative Council of
Hong Kong: "The universal suffrage may be false.
It (the CCP) will pre-select the candidates that
we can vote for.
This kind of universal suffrage is false.
It uses patriotic words and love of Hong Kong
to define the standard. But it's empty.
In fact, the so-called patriotism and love
for Hong Kong is actually love of the party.
Hong Kong people have never loved the party."
Albert Ho thinks Hong Kong people are always
looking for democracy and freedom.
Albert Ho: "Hong Kong has been an open and free place.
We enjoyed freedom for many years.
From the 1980s until now, in these 30 plus years,
people in Hong Kong are always welcome to express their opinions freely.
It's also very clear how eager Hong Kong people
are to have freedom and democracy.
As for dictatorship, especially the one-party's dictatorship
in Mainland China, we have our strong opinion.
How can it say that having different ideas
means subversion?"
To Yiu-Ming, an Assistant Professor from the News
Department of Hong Kong Baptist University,
said that Yu Zhengsheng implied that
CCP will choose the candidates by its favor.
Tu Yiu-Ming thinks Yu Zhengsheng's words don't
respect the basic Law, lack the spirit of the rule of law, and are unreasonable.
To Yiu-Ming: "Hong Kong is mainly executing the basic law.
If something goes against the law, punishment
will be according to the basic law.
Then before a person takes position, no matter who he is,
he hasn't gone against the law since he hasn't taken position,
how can you say he's not allowed to take
position or attend the election?"
Since Leung Chun-ying took power, there has been
a Youth Care Association in Hong Kong.
The speaker said that it was founded by the CCP directly.
The members of the Association hung up banners
that oppose Falun Gong just beside the Falun Gong banners or even higher, or covered the banners of Falun Gong.
Some of the members are dedicated to using ugly words
to attack the people who criticize the CCP, and even wave their fists to threaten them.
Albert Ho: "We are very angry about these actions.
It's obviously violently attacking different views.
It didn't accommodate Falun Gong.
Their actions are against Hong Kong's law, which is also
destructive to the free and diverse Hong Kong culture.
So, we told Hong Kong government clearly that
we can't tolerate these actions."
Hong Kong media reported that these people who attacked
Falun Gong practitioners are hired by the Hong Kong pro-CCP Democratic Progressive Alliance.
They received payment based on their actions,
for example, quarrelling, waving fists, etc.

Horsemeat scare reaches Hong Kong
The government in Hong Kong is removing imported beef products from store shelves. It's worried following the European horsemeat scandal.
But with most food coming from mainland China, Hong Kong consumers are concerned about whether their food regulations are being strictly adhered to.

THE MAN WHO LIVED ON HIS BIKE
I love being on a bike. It helps me feel free. I get it from my dad. After so many days spent riding and filming through the streets of Montreal, being sometimes quite cold, sometimes quite hot - and sometimes quite scared, I dedicate this movie to him.
