Larry Kwak, MD, Ph.D., named to the 2010 TIME 100 Most Influential People list
bit.ly Larry Kwak, MD, Ph. D., chair of the department of Lymphoma and Myeloma at MD Anderson, who has devoted 20 years to investigating the science of cancer vaccines, specifically a personalized therapy for follicular lymphoma, was named in 2010 as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. Kwak and a team led by scientists at MD Anderson reported in the online version of Journal of Clinical Oncology that a lymphoma vaccine uniquely tailored for each patient extends disease-free survival by 14 months, with signs of an even better response for patients with a specific biological marker. "The study continues to show that the vaccine increases the usual time until relapse for follicular lymphoma by about 14 months. That's significant because most cancer drugs are approved on the basis of extending survival only a few months," says Kwak, corresponding author of the study. Kwak, who invented the vaccine while at the National Cancer Institute says, "These results have the potential to usher in a new age of cancer vaccines. I believe a whole flood of agents will soon begin to show positive results." The multi-center study is the first successful phase III trial of a lymphoma vaccine and one of the first of a personalized cancer therapy agent. Initial results were presented in part at the Plenary Session of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in 2009.

TEDxPugetSound - Stephen Friend, MD, PhD - True Crowd Sourcing of Medicine: Activating All of Us
Stephen Friend, MD, PhD, is President, Co-Founder and Director of Sage Bionetworks, a nonprofit biomedical research organization created to revolutionize how researchers approach the complexity of human biological information and the treatment of disease. Stephen explains that we have all of the ideas and tools at our disposal to drastically improve health and provides unique ideas as to how to progress despite our nature to work against solutions. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Howard S. Fox, MD, Ph.D., professor, Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience and Director of the Center for Integrative and Translational Neuroscience. Factors that injure neurons in the brain and how neurons can be protected are the focus of Dr. Fox's laboratory. For example how HIV enters the brain, the beneficial and harmful actions of immune cells, the effects of drugs, and the cell biology of neurons are all projects in which graduate students play a big roll and bring fresh ideas to the studies. His lab is known for their use of "omic" technologies (proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) and their successful application to future experimentation. Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, Medical students only get a one hour lecture on nutrition
fatnews.com Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ FatNews.com. Doctors get NO training about nutritional treatments in medical school, and almost NO training about nutrition. Instead, they are taught to use drugs, drugs and more drugs. Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ FatNews.com I will play an audio clip from a 2005 speech by Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD where he says that he has had 40 fourth-year medical students come to see him to learn about the nutritional therapy he discovered 50 years ago which cures schizophrenia in a majority of cases. ( Yes, really. The treatment involves using large doses of niacin plus other nutrients. ) When he asked them how much training about nutrition had they received in medical school, they said they only had a one (1) hour lecture on nutrition in medical school. That's it. A total of one hour. So what do most doctors do throughout their entire career? Give drugs and more drugs and more drugs! Because that is what they were taught to do in medical school! Many doctors also believe nutritional therapies must not be effective because they did not learn about them in medical school. In other words, "If I don't know about it, it must not be important." So if your doctor tells you that nutritional therapies are nonsense realize that they are not speaking out of knowledge, but rather they are saying this out of ignorance. About 15 years ago, my mother asked her doctor, "How much calcium should I take?" Her doctor replied, "Well ummm ummm ummm" My mother said, "Should ...

Andrew Moulden, MD, PhD, explains why Drs. missed vaccine injuries including Autism.
This is a section of a thirty-minute interview excerpt available at publicaffairsmediainc.org At our site Dr. Moulden presents a new w explanation of the underlying cause of how vaccine injuries cause chronic diseases, including Autism. He says its not just mercury; the fundamental cause is our bodys reaction to vaccines themselves. No vaccine is safe. All carry risk of major injury. If we want to stop chronic disease, including Autism, we have to listen to the many thousands of parents who say their child was normal before receiving a vaccine, and clearly damaged after vaccination.

Michel Sadelain, MD, PhD: What is Personalized Medicine?
As defined by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, "Personalized Medicine" refers to the tailoring of medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient...to classify individuals into subpopulations that differ in their susceptibility to a particular disease or their response to a specific treatment. Preventative or therapeutic interventions can then be concentrated on those who will benefit, sparing expense and side effects for those who will not. Lee Hood MD PhD - Institute for Systems Biology
The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is an internationally renowned, non-profit research institute headquartered in Seattle and dedicated to the study and application of systems biology. Founded by Leroy Hood, Alan Aderem and Ruedi Aebersold, ISB seeks to unravel the mysteries of human biology and identify strategies for predicting and preventing diseases such as cancer, diabetes and AIDS. ISB's systems approach integrates biology, computation and technological development, enabling scientists to analyze all elements in a biological system rather than one gene or protein at a time. Founded in 2000, the Institute has grown to 13 faculty and more than 280 staff members; an annual budget of nearly $40 million; and an extensive network of academic and industrial partners. For more information about ISB, visit www.systemsbiology.org.
