This is a late appearance of Group 1850 on Dutch television.
I don't think the Group really existed at that time. It is Peter Sjardin who is playbacking, but the rest are invited friends I suppose.
Van Oekel's Discohoek was a persiflage on other popular music programs. It was presented by Sjef van Oekel, who couldn't learn a single line by heart. Therefor he always hold papers with the text in his hand. The writer of the show, Wim T Schippers, exploited this: if Sjef anyway had to read his text from paper, why care for easy to remember lines? So there was no limit in the absurdness of the script.
Group 1850 was not so popular in the Netherlands, I remember a concert where there were not even 10 paying visitors. Instead of doing their normal show they invited the audience on the stage to play with them. I didn't dare...
Here you can find a cassette recording of a never released lp by Peter Sjardin, the 'organiser' of the band: http://wiels.nl/blog/index.php?entry=entry080310-234009

Stephen Foster's DOLLY DAY-1850-Tom Roush
This is another of Foster's 'Plantation Melodies' that was popular among the minstrel shows in the 1800s. After their decline, this upbeat song faded into obscurity like so many others. It's repetitious but it is a 'toe-tapper.' This is one Foster song that you'll not find 500 or more renditions of on YouTube. In fact, I've never heard anyone play it. I found the original sheet music and arranged it from that.

6. Expansion and Slavery: Legacies of the Mexican War and the Compromise of 1850
The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119)
In this lecture, Professor Blight discusses some of the conflicts, controversies, and compromises that led up to the Civil War. After analyzing Frederick Douglass's 1852 Fourth of July speech and the inherent conflict between American slavery and American freedom, the lecture moves into a lengthy discussion of the war with Mexico in the 1840s. Professor Blight explains why northerners and southerners made "such a fuss" over the issue of slavery's expansion into the western territories. The lecture ends with the crisis over California's admission to statehood and the Compromise of 1850.

"Gouvy's Piano Quintet is an absolutely first rate work, a masterpiece, which without doubt deserves to be revived!"--The Chamber Music Journal
Théodore Gouvy (1819-1898) was born into a French speaking family in the Alsatian village of Goffontaine which at the time belonged to Prussia. As a child, he showed no significant talent for music and after a normal preparatory education was sent to Paris in 1836 to study law. While there, he also continued piano lessons and became friendly with Adolphe Adam. This led to further music studies in Paris and Berlin. Gouvy, drawn toward pure instrumental music as opposed to opera, set himself the unenviable task of becoming a French symphonist. It was unenviable because the French, and especially the Parisians, throughout most of the 19th century were opera-mad and not particularly interested in pure instrumental music. It was this distain for instrumental music in general which led to Gouvy living the last third of his life almost entirely in Germany where he was much appreciated. Musicians of the first rank such as Brahms, Reinecke and Joachim held Gouvy's music in the highest regard. His compositions, and especially his chamber music, were much admired and often performed in those countries (Germany, Austria, England, Scandinavia & Russia) where chamber music mattered. Gouvy was universally acknowledged for being a master of form and for his deft sense of instrumental timbre. Mendelssohn and Schumann were his models and his music developed along the lines one might have expected of those men had they lived longer. Virtually all of his works show that he was a gifted melodist whose music is a joy to hear.
The Piano Quintet was composed around 1850. It is in three movements and full of youthful exuberance and vitality. From the opening measures of the excellent first movement, Allegro giocoso, the listener is captivated by the exciting and lovely melodies. The second subject even has the piano playing Trout-like arpeggios to the strings' sustained melody. Yet, the music is in no way derivative. To the contrary, it is fresh and full of pleasing ideas. The the opening theme to the middle movement, Larghetto, is introduced by the piano. It has a baroque quality to it but then shows a French delicacy when the strings join in. Although this is a long movement, Gouvy is able to keep the listener's interest without ever altering the elegiac quality of the music. In the brilliant sounding finale, Allegro con brio, one can discern the influence of Mendelssohn, but the treatment is very original.

Life in Old Louisiana (1830-1850)
This sort of documentary was made in 1941 (as stated in the opening titles). This short film depicts the culture of old Louisiana, including such aspects as slavery on cotton and cane plantations, the prevailing French language, Mississippi River trade, education, religion and music.
The film focuses on the elite and (wealthy) white families, such as plantation owners and business men. Sadly enough the delicate matters e.g. about how coloured people were treated in those days, are apparently insignificant. This documentary however (even when it's not really an accurate survey of history) might still be an interesting image of the time.
