Part 1 of the Retired Race Horse Thoroughbred Training Project with Eric Dierks.
I chose "Brazilian Wedding" at the Trainer's Challenge. Every horse has a certain quality that just stands out for a first impression. For Brazilian it was her overall proportioned sleek look. When looking at her for a more detailed assessment, I liked her comfortable eye, big ears, and the fact she was on all four feet whenever standing. Though skinny after her let down after racing, she has the bone to bulk up some muscle for power. She also has a very feminine look without being dainty. After all, pretty is what pretty does. Race Horse First Film Ever 1878 Eadweard Muybridge
This Race Horse was the first Film ever, filmed in 1878 by Edward Muybridge. Eadweard J. Muybridge (pronounced /ˌɛdwərd ˈmaɪbrɪdʒ/; 9 April 1830 -- 8 May 1904) was an English photographer who spent much of his life in the United States. He is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip. By 1878, Muybridge had successfully photographed a horse in fast motion. This series of photos taken in Palo Alto, California, is called Sallie Gardner at a Gallop or The Horse in Motion, and shows that the hooves do all leave the ground — although not with the legs fully extended forward and back, as contemporary illustrators tended to imagine, but rather at the moment when all the hooves are tucked under the horse as it switches from "pushing" with the back legs to "pulling" with the front legs. This series of photos stands as one of the earliest forms of videography.

Gay Future Racehorse
20 moments that shook Irish Sport Gay Future was the racehorse at the centre of an attempted coup by an Irish betting syndicate in Great Britain in 1974. The plot involved a Scottish trainer named Antony Collins initially presenting a poorly-performing horse at his stables as if it were the real Gay Future. This lowered the expectations of reviewers, and hence raised the betting odds on offer, when the real horse was entered in a race at Cartmel in Cumbria. On the same day, two additional horses trained by Collins were entered in earlier races at other courses, but these were withdrawn shortly before the races. Syndicate members had used bookmakers away from the courses to place a large number of double and triple wagers, which involved Gay Future in combination bets with these additional horses. The last-minute withdrawals now meant that a large number of bets would roll over onto Gay Future. As the race start time approached, syndicate accomplices at Cartmel ensured that the long odds (10 to 1) on Gay Future were not lowered by on-course punters. Gay Future won easily, but bookmakers became suspicious at the unusual betting patterns. A follow-up police investigation resulted in syndicate leaders being convicted of attempted fraud, although they received relatively small fines from a sympathetic judge

Wastage - Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses
The racing industry would have you believe that racehorses are well look after. However there is an industry term which is not often mentioned because it is one of the most pressing issues facing the racing industry: WASTAGE.
Definition: An industry term which refers to horses being prematurely withdrawn from racing.
Reality: When horses are no longer financially viable and are mostly sent to slaughter.
This is the racing industry's biggest, darkest secret.

The Inaugural Henry Cole Lecture: Sir Christopher Frayling, 30 October 2008
The inaugural Henry Cole Lecture, held at the V&A; Museum in London on 30 October 2008. The purpose of the lecture is to celebrate the legacy of the Museum’s founding director, and explore its implications for museums, culture and society today.
The lecture, entitled 'We Must Have Steam: Get Cole! Henry Cole, the Chamber of Horrors, and the Educational Role of the Museum' was delivered by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling. He presented new research on the “chamber of horrors” (a contemporary nickname for one of the V&A;'s earliest galleries, 'Decorations on False Principles', that opened in 1852) and the myths and realities of its reception, then opened up a wider debate on design education and museums from the nineteenth century to the present day.
Transcript:
Mark Jones: The annual Henry Cole lecture has been initiated to celebrate Henry Cole's legacy and to explore the contribution that culture can make to education and society today. It has also been launched to celebrate the opening of the Sackler Centre for arts education, including the Hochhauser Auditorium in which we sit tonight. There could be no one better than Professor Sir Christopher Frayling to give the inaugural Henry Cole Lecture. Christopher is a rare being: an intellectual who is a great communicator; a theorist who has a firm grip on the practical realities of life: a writer who truly and instinctively understands the words of making design and visual communication. As an enormously successful and respected Rector of the Royal College of Art, as Chairman of the Arts Council, and as a member and chair of boards too numerous to mention - but not forgetting the Royal Mint Advisory Committee which has recently been responsible for redesigning the coinage (personal interest) and as by far the longest-serving Trustee of the V&A;, he brings together culture, education and public service in a way which Henry Cole would have approved and admired. So it's more than fitting that he should be giving this first Henry Cole Lecture, 'We Must Have Steam: Get Cole! Henry Cole, the Chamber of Horrors, and the Educational Role of the Museum'.
CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING:
Thank you very much indeed Mark and thank you very much for inviting me to give this first Henry Cole Lecture. Just how much of an honour it is for me will I hope become clear as the lecture progresses.
Mark, Chairpeople, ladies and gentlemen:
Hidden away in the garden of the South Kensington Museum - now the Madejski Garden of the V&A; - there is a small and easily overlooked commemorative plaque that doesn't have a museum number. It reads: 'In Memory of Jim Died 1879 Aged 15 Years, Faithful Dog of Sir Henry Cole of this Museum'. Jim had in fact died on 30 January 1879. He was with Henry Cole in his heyday, as the king of South Kensington - its museums and colleges - and saw him through to retirement from the public service and beyond. And next to this inscription there's another one dedicated to Jim's successor, Tycho, and dated 1885. The dogs are actually buried in the garden. Now we know from Henry Cole's diary that between 1864 and 1879 Jim, who was a cairn terrier, was often to be seen in public at his master's side. In 1864 they were together inspecting the new memorial to the Great Exhibition of 1851 just behind the Albert Hall - a statue of Prince Albert by Joseph Durham on a lofty plinth covered in statistics about the income, expenditure and visitor numbers to the Great Exhibition: 6,039,195 to be exact. Cole had been a tireless champion of Prince Albert and according to the Princess Royal (later Empress of Prussia) there was a family saying in Buckingham Palace at the time, invented by Albert himself, that when things needed doing 'when we want steam we must get Cole'. We may therefore assume that when looking at the memorial, Cole was interested in the inscription, the statistics and the likeness of Prince Albert, while Jim was more interested in the possibilities of the plinth. In early 1866 - these are five studies of Jim, an etching by Henry Cole himself of 1864. In early 1866, first thing in the morning, soon after the workmen's bell had rung, Henry and Jim would set forth together from Cole's newly constructed official residence in the Museum (where he moved in July 1863) to tour the building sites of South Kensington - a name which was first invented by Cole when he re-named the museum The South Kensington Museum to describe the new developments happening around Brompton Church. According to 'The Builder' magazine, these two well-known figures would 'be seen clambering over bricks, mortar and girders up ladders and about scaffolding'. Several buildings in the South Kensington Renaissance Revival style were springing up all around them: The Natural History Museum, The College of Science, the extension to this Museum. And on the morning the Bethnal Green Museum opened - 24 June 1872 - Jim showed a healthy distaste for his master's well-known predilection for pomp and

Racehorse Rescue from the Ground Up
How to transform a racehorse into a trusted partner. After working with thoroughbreds for almost thirty years, on and off the track, when it comes to retraining, I approach them by fulfilling their physical and psychological needs. Before I start training them for a new purpose, I use the Carolyn Resnick Method to build a relationship and a common language, giving them a solid foundation to receive the future training with an open mind and a willing heart.

Ruffian Tribute - For the best race horse ever!
READ THE DESCRIPTION!!!! I FINALLY MADE IT!!! And even my Movie Maker stopped hating me^^ well, at least for now... -_-* This video is for Ruffian, and it tells a part of her story. Ruffian was a dark brown, almost black filly who reached the young age of 3 years. She won her first reace by 15 lenghs in front of the rest and broke a record. She won 10 races, records included (also colts records). After winning the Filly Triple Crown (now called Triple Tiara, she was still unbeaten) everyone was screaming for a Match Race between her and Foolish Pleasure, he also won all his races except 1. In the end, Ruffian hit the gate with her front leg quite hard. After that she took the lead by a half length, suddenly the leg she hit by the gate broke, but she kept running until she was running on a bone, her hoof hanging on some skin. Ruffian had no chance from the beginning on, it would be way more human to put her down on the track. But the problem was that she broke down on national TV; if they wouldn´t at least bring her to the vet the people would have said that it was able to rescue her and blame the owners for nothing. Foolish Pleasure had to "win" the "race" on his own. He became #97 of the top 100 US thoroughbred champions of the 20th century (Ruffian is on #35), and became 22 years old, he died in 1994 because of developed severe laminitis in all four feet. Despite all treatment efforts he had be euthanized. (For all Pleasure hater: YES, severe laminitis is quite painful ...

Secretariat-Perhaps the Greatest Race Horse of all Time
In 1973 after winning the Kentucky Derby in (still) record time, and winning the Preakness, Secretariat was about to become a legend, and only the Belmont Stakes stood in the way. One of the greatest moments in sports was about to take place, and perhaps the greatest race in history--enjoy Websters Dictionary defines the word "Perhaps" as follows- used as a Adverb: possibly but not certainly : maybe used as a Synonyms: conceivably, maybe, perchance, possibly- I am getting sick and tired of all that negative comments about the Video I posted because either they don't read the dictionary very often, or they are just plain stupid "Perhaps" **note** I happen to believe Secretariat is the Greatest Race Horse of All Time
