Qing Empire, China - Yuan Khanate Umayyad Caliphate - Second French Colonial Empire - Abbasid Caliphate - An empire involves the extension of a state's sovereignty over territories all around the world. For example, because of the British Empire's territories around the globe, it was often said in the 19th century that "the sun never sets on the British Empire." This phrase could have been applied before with the Spanish Empire [1] and it was used later to describe the Russian Empire. This article provides a list of the largest empires in world history.

Spain during the Arabic umayyad reign (Al-Andalus) el Andalucia
Abd a-Rahman I (Arabic: عبد الرحمن الداخل; known as "the Immigrant", also the "Falcon of Andalus" or "The Falcon of the Quraish"; 731 788) was the founder of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba (755), a Muslim dynasty that ruled the greater part of Iberia for nearly three centuries (including the succeeding Caliphate of Córdoba). The Muslims called the regions of Iberia under their dominion al-Andalus. Abd a-Rahman's establishment of a government in al-Andalus represented a branching from the rest of the Islamic Empire, which had been usurped by the Abbasid overthrow of the Umayyads from Damascus in 750.
The Golden age of Jewish culture in Spain, also known as the Golden Age of Arab (or Moorish) Rule in Iberia, refers to a period of history during the Muslim rule of the Iberian Peninsula (the former Roman and Visigothic Hispania) in which Jews were generally accepted in society and Jewish religious, cultural, and economic life
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_language_influence_on_the_Spanish_language#Other_influences
blossomed.
The nature and length of this "Golden Age" has been a subject of debate. Some scholars give the start of the Golden Age as either 711718 (after the Muslim conquest of Hispania) or 912 (the rule of Abd-ar-Rahman III) and the end of the Golden Age variously as 1031 (when the Caliphate of Cordoba ended), 1066 (the date of the Granada massacre), 1090 (when the Almoravides invaded), or the mid-1100s (when the Almohades invaded).

Get the App! Go to http://bit.ly/MudVXh
The Abbasid Caliphate or, more simply, the Abbasids (Arabic: العبّاسيّون / ISO 233: al-'abbāsīyūn), was the third of the Islamic caliphates. It was ruled by the Abbasid dynasty of caliphs, who built their capital in Baghdad after overthrowing the Umayyad caliphate from all but the al-Andalus region.
The Abbasid caliphate was founded by the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad's youngest uncle, 'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, in Harran in 750 CE and shifted its capital in 762 to Baghdad. It flourished for two centuries, but slowly went into decline with the rise to power of the Turkish army it had created, the Mamluks.
Within 150 years of gaining control of Persia, the caliphs were forced to cede power to local dynastic emirs who only nominally acknowledged their authority. The caliphate also lost the Western provinces of al-Andalus, Maghreb and Ifriqiya to an Umayyad prince, the Aghlabids and the Fatimid Caliphate, respectively.

Damascus... A heaven of Hidden Treasures
"...no recorded event has occurred in the world but Damascus was in existence to receive the news of it. Go back as far as you will into the vague past, there was always a Damascus. To Damascus years are only moments, decades are only flitting trifles of time. She measures time not by days, months and years, but by the empires she has seen rise and prosper and crumble to ruin. She is a type of immortality. She was Greece rise and flourish two thousand years, and die. In her old age she saw Rome built, she saw it overshadow the world with its power; she saw it perish... She has looked upon the dry bones of a thousand empires and will see the tombs of a thousand more before she dies..."

when the sky wept blood (Imam Hussein Movie) حين أمطرت السماء دماً
Ḥusayn ibn Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (Arabic: حسين بن علي بن أﺑﻲ طالب) (3rd Shabān 4 AH - 10th Muharram 61 AH; 8th January 626 AD - 10th October 680 AD) was the grandson of Muhammad and the son of Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (final Caliph and first Shīah Imām) and Fātimah Zahrā (daughter of Muhammad). Husayn is an important figure in Islām as he is a member of the Ahlul Bayt (the household of Muhammad) and Ahlul Kisā, as well as being a Shīah Imām, and one of The Fourteen Infallibles of Twelvers. Husayn ibn Alī is revered as a martyr who fought tyranny, as he refused to pledge allegiance to Yazīd I[11], the Umayyad caliph. He rose up to create a regime that would reinstate a true Islāmic polity as opposed to what he considered the unjust rule of the Umayyads.[11] As a consequence, Husayn was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbalā in 680 (61AH) by Shimr Ibn Thil-Jawshan.[12] The anniversary of his martyrdom is called Āshūrā ("tenth" day of Muharram) and is a day of mourning and religious observance for Shia Muslims. Revenge for Husayn's death was turned into a rallying cry that helped undermine the Umayyad caliphate, and gave impetus to the rise of a powerful Shīah movement. By The Sword - The Rise of Islam in Japan - Part 1 of 2 - Documentary Road to Hajj (Pilgrimage)
The Fastest Growing Religion in the World
The Spread of Islam began when prophet Muhammad (PBUH) (570 - 632) started preaching the revelation he received from God at the age of 40. During his lifetime the Muslim ummah (Nation/ Brotherhood) was established in Arabia by way of their conversion or allegiance to Islam. In the first centuries conversion to Islam followed the rapid growth of the Muslim world created by the conquests of the Rashidun and Umayyad Caliphs.
Muslim dynasties were soon established and subsequent empires such as those of the Abbasids, Fatimids, Ajuuraan, Adal, Warsangali in Somalia, Almoravids, Seljuk Turks, Mughals in India and Safavids in Persia and Ottomans were among the largest and most powerful in the world. The people of the Islamic world created numerous sophisticated centers of culture and science with far-reaching mercantile networks, travelers, scientists, hunters, mathematicians, doctors and philosophers, all of whom contributed to the Golden Age of Islam.
The activities of this quasi-political community of believers and nations, or ummah, resulted in the spread of Islam over the centuries, spreading outwards from Mecca to the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east. As of October 2009, there were 1.571 billion Muslims, making Islam the fastest growing and one of the largest religions in the world.
"Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?"

Surat Fuşşilat (Explained in Detail) 41:53

Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow) - 2:256

Following the Muslim conquest of Hispania, Al-Andalus was divided into five administrative areas roughly corresponding to Andalusia, Galicia and Portugal, Castile and León, Aragon and Catalonia, and Septimania.[4] As a political domain or domains, it successively constituted a province of the Umayyad Caliphate, initiated by the Caliph Al-Walid I (711--750); the Emirate of Córdoba (c. 750--929); the Caliphate of Córdoba (929--1031); and the Caliphate of Córdoba's taifa (successor) kingdoms. Rule under these kingdoms saw the rise in cultural exchange and cooperation between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Under the Caliphate of Córdoba, al-Andalus was a beacon of learning, and the city of Córdoba became one of the leading cultural and economic centres in both the Mediterranean Basin and the Islamic world.

Islam: The Empire Strikes Back
Beginning in Arabia, Islam grew into a vast religion spreading across the globe. At its start in 610 C.E., Muhammad, the leader of Islam, began having mystical visits from the archangel, Gabriel, explaining the necessity of the preaching of the one true god, Allah, as shown in this video. And so, Islam was created. Within 100 years of the creation of Islam, major expansion had taken place.
Though, the death of Muhammad caused major conflict between Muslims; does the next leader need to be a descendant of Muhammad or simply the person best able to lead the community. A competition between Abu Bakr, a close friend of Muhammad, and Ali, Muhammad’s relative, flared. Eventually, Abu Bakr was appointed, ruling from 632-634 C.E. A summary of the achievements of his ruling include the confirmation of the Five Pillars, the unification of Muslim Arabs, and the expansion of the Muslim community. This rule began to upset Ali, eventually causing the split between Sunnis and Shias.
Abu Bakr selected a successor, Umar, who ruled from 634-644 C.E. Umar, as well, expanded the Muslim community, defined the Dar al Islam (places where Islam is routed in society), gave more structure to the government, and chose a comity to decide the next Caliph. The race began between Uthman and Ali, and Ali was overthrown. Uthman ruled from 644-656 C.E., and used similar tactics to Umar. During his reign, financial problems caused revolts, leading to his death.
Meanwhile, Ali and the Umayyad leader, Mu’awiya, fight for the role as Caliphate. A third party is chosen to decide the verdict which is that both should resign. When both refuse, the Karijites (Islamic faction) attempt to kill both, but only succeed in killing Ali. Therefore, Mu’awiya takes over, causing the main split between Sunnis and Shias.
As stated in the video, the Sunnis are the acceptors of Mu’awiya, believing that the caliph should be a devout Muslim even if he is not related to Muhammad. On the other hand, the Shia are Ali’s supporters who believe that the caliph should be a direct descendant of Muhammad.
With Mu’awiya in control, the Umayyad dynasty (661-750 C.E.) takes control, spreading Muslim rule from Spain to central Asia. The Umayyads moved the capital to Damascus, created a tax system, made coinage uniform throughout the empire, established innovative architecture such as mosques and canals, but eventually wars over succession caused the major downfall of the Umayyad dynasty.
While being taken over by a different clan, the Abbasids (750-1258 C.E.), the Umayyad leader escapes to Spain and sets up an empire there. The Abbasids move the capital to Baghdad, becoming a crossroad for land and water trade. The achievements of the Abbasid dynasty include a code of law (Shari’ah), a sophisticated banking system, new libraries and universities, development in translation, medicine, astronomy, math, chemistry, and advanced navigation and sailing techniques. Eventually, the Abbasid dynasty fell due to the inability to maintain complete control over the entire Muslim empire and separated into independent states.
Meanwhile, Muslim Spain (where the Umayyads take over), known as Al-Andalus, became a thriving dynasty, consisting of tolerance and distinct Umayyad culture as shown in the video, including authentic artwork and glorious architecture such as the Great Mosque of Córdoba. Sadly, the Spanish Inquisition (1492 C.E.) ends the glory age of Spain, as the Christians gain control and expel all Jews and Muslims, crumbling the Muslim empire.

The Great Arab Conquests
*The Arab conquests were an extraordinary period in the 7th and 8th centuries when the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula conquered the Middle East, Persia, North Africa and Southern Europe and spread the ideas of the Islamic religion.
In 632 the prophet Muhammad died and left behind the nascent religion of Islam among a few tribes in the Arabian Desert. They were relatively small in number, they were divided among themselves and they were surrounded by vast and powerful empires.
Yet within 100 years Arab armies controlled territory from Northern Spain to Southern Iran and Islamic ideas had begun to profoundly refashion the societies they touched. It is one of the most extraordinary and significant events in world history that began the slow and profound transformation of Greek and Persian societies into Islamic ones.
But how did the Arab armies achieve such extensive victories, how did they govern the people they conquered and what was the relationship between the achievements of the Arabs and the religious beliefs they carried with them?*

The History Hut: The Rise of Islam (Part Four)
In part four of The History Hut: The Rise of Islam, we'll be covering the rest of the High Caliphate, we'll examine the leadership of Umar and Uthman and we'll take a closer look at what was an era of phenominal territorial expansion.
We will also cover Ali's rise to power and the two major challenges he faced, first from Aisha and then from Mu'awiya.
After the Battle of Siffin, Ali was assassinated by a more hardline group called the kharijites and Mu'awiya becomes Caliph. He begins what we call the Umayyad Dynasty, which lasts until it is challenged in 750. At that time, a new dynasty arises, called the Abbasid.
We examine the problems in the Umayyad period: a challenge from Ali's son Hussein and growing corruption at the top, followed by the armed struggle that leads to the rise of the Abbasid.
This episode ends by drawing some conclusions about what goes wrong - loss of control, corruption, leaders acting like secular rulers, local rulers becoming a parallel source of power, and much more.
