ICELAND: Þingvellir
Recorded September 6, 2008. Þingvellir is a place in Bláskógarbyggð in southwestern Iceland, near the peninsula of Reykjanes and the Hengill volcanic area. Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. Þingvellir National Park was founded in 1930 to protect the remains of the parliament site and was later expanded to protect natural phenomena in the surrounding area. Þingvellir National Park was the first national park in Iceland and was decreed "a protected national shrine for all Icelanders, the perpetual property of the Icelandic nation under the preservation of parliament, never to be sold or mortgaged." The continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates can be clearly seen in the cracks or faults which are traversing the region, the biggest one, Almannagjá, being a veritable canyon. This also causes the often-measurable earthquakes in the area. Þingvellir is situated on the northern shore of Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake of Iceland. The river Öxará traverses the national park and forms a waterfall at the Almannagjá, called Öxarárfoss. Together with the waterfall Gullfoss and the geysers of Haukadalur, Þingvellir is part of the most famous sights of Iceland, the Golden Circle. Þingvellir is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Icelandic Horses Þingvellir 1
Riding through the Icelandic national park Þingvellir. No single place epitomizes the history of Iceland and the Icelandic nation better than Þingvellir by the river Öxará. At Þingvellir -- literally "Parliament Plains" -- the Alþing general assembly was established around 930 and continued to convene there until 1798. Major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir and therefore the place is held in high esteem by all Icelanders. Today Þingvellir is a protected national shrine. According to the law, passed in 1928, the protected area shall always be the property of the Icelandic nation, under the preservation of the Alþing. ((c) www.thingvellir.is)

Þingvellir - Iceland
Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It is also the site of a rift valley and home to Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. When I was there it was misty in between because of ash from Eyjafjallajökull Volcano.

Hótel Valhöll - Hotel Valholl burning in Thingvellir Nationalpark
Part-16 Brimketill - Reykjanesvirkjun - Swiming www.youtube.com A hotel close to Thingvellir, the national, historic park of Iceland, roughly 45km east of the capital Reykjavik, suffered a tragic fire and burnt down Friday night (10 July). The fire completely destroyed Hotel Valholl. All 29 rooms were fully booked for Friday night due to the festivals and concerts going on in the area. All of the Icelanders that were staying at the hotel fled to their own accomodations after the fire. One German tourist and guest at the hotel was provided with stay at a hotel in Reykjavik, according to Ulfar. A foreign couple with 2 children that was just finished checking into the hotel right before the fire fled for themselves. Two Icelandic couples suffered from mouth injuries. I have been in contact with them and they are going to be reimbursed by their own home insurance, says hotel owner Ulfar. He has not yet accounted for his economic damage but he claims most has been covered by insurance. Police have been taking statements from the hotel staff and guests.
