Hitchens '10: Post-War Iraq
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO MY OTHER CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrMindFeed November 2010: Tony Jones talks to the writer, polemicist and commentator Christopher Hitchens in Washington DC about his cancer diagnosis, his life, his politics and writing.
He was suffering from cancer of the oesophagus. He has described his illness as "a bit of a yawn" and accepted that it is a result of his hard drinking and smoking lifestyle. At the time he was told that he has only a one in 20 chance of living for longer than five years.
Christopher Eric Hitchens (born 13 April 1949) is an Anglo-American author and journalist whose books, essays, and journalistic career span more than four decades. He has been a columnist and literary critic at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and became a media fellow at the Hoover Institution in September 2008. He is a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits and in 2005 was voted the world's fifth top public intellectual in a Prospect/Foreign Policy poll. He's known for his admiration of George Orwell, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson and for his excoriating critiques of, among others, Mother Teresa, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Henry Kissinger. His confrontational style of debate has made him both a lauded and controversial figure. As a political observer, polemicist and self-defined radical, he rose to prominence as a fixture of the left-wing publications in his native Britain and in the United States. His departure from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the Western left following Ayatollah Khomeini's issue of a fatwa- calling for the murder of Salman Rushdie. The 11 September 2001 attacks strengthened his internationalist embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." His numerous editorials in support of the Iraq War caused some to label him a neoconservative, although Hitchens insists he is not "a conservative of any kind"

Christopher Hitchens—the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant—died today at the age of 62. Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010, just after the publication of his memoir, Hitch-22, and began chemotherapy soon after. "My chief consolation in this year of living dyingly has been the presence of friends," he wrote in the June 2011 issue. He died in their presence, too, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. May his 62 years of living, well, so livingly console the many of us who will miss him dearly

13th Sept, 2004 Motion: "A pre-emptive foreign policy is a recipe for disaster"
Chair: Francine Stock.
For: Senator Gary Hart & Sir Simon Jenkins
Against: Christopher Hitchens & David Aaronovitch.
** Gary Hart: Despite the theoretical nature of the motion, the point at issue is America's invasion of Iraq. He says that with an immediate and unavoidable threat, a nation does not require international acceptance to defend itself, but in the case of Iraq that threat was not present.
** Simon Jenkins: Not against the concept of intervention or pre-emption, but has two basic concerns. Firstly, that we cannot have a state of affairs where any country can go to war; and secondly, that we should not extend this concept to groups that constitute a threat within other states.
** Christopher Hitchens: It is often assumed the concept of pre-emption runs counter to the nexus of international law. However, he points to many treaties which suggest otherwise, such as the Genocide Convention -- which mandates signatory powers (upon receiving information) to begin pre-emptive action. In his view a foreign policy that doesn't have a pre-emptive character is doomed to disaster
** David Aaronovitch: A largely reactive foreign policy is certainly a recipe for disaster, and believes that the test of a pre-emptive foreign policy is the conflict in Afghanistan. He argues that if you vote in favour of this motion you are actually in support of a pre-emptive foreign policy, but you just want it to be more intelligent. Aaronovitch concludes by asserting the importance of intelligent and principled pre-emptive policy.
First Vote: 314 For, 195 Against, 183 Don't know
Final Vote: 265 For, 400 Against, 45 Don't know
The motion is defeated by 135 votes

Christopher Hitchens on Iraq and Iran (Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty)
Christopher Hitchens is one of the most prolific and controversial writers in the English-speaking world. A prominent atheist, he is the author of "God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," which became an international best-seller in 2007. He has also written books on topics ranging from the partition of Cyprus to Thomas Jefferson and the Anglo-American relationship; his most recent is the memoir "Hitch 22."
RFE/RL writer at large James Kirchick recently interviewed Hitchens at his home in Washington about his left-wing revolutionary past, his views on America, Iran's nuclear program, Turkey's Islamist turn, Putin's Russia, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sampled his views on a variety of international figures.
Hitchens, whose support for the war in Iraq angered many of his former comrades on the left, reaffirms his support for the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and predicts that a military confrontation with Iran is likely.

About the Program
From the City University of New York, authors George Galloway and Christopher Hitchens debate the war in Iraq. George Galloway, opposed to the Iraq War, is a member of the British Parliment and the author of "Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington: The Brit Who Set Congress Straight About Iraq." The book tells the story of his recent appearance before the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, where he verbally attacked U.S. Senators while responding to charges related to Iraq's oil-for-food program. Christopher Hitchens, in favor of the Iraq War, is the author of "Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays" and "Blood, Class and Empire: The Enduring Anglo-American Relationship." "Democracy Now!" radio host Amy Goodman moderates. She is the author of "The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them."
About the Author
George Galloway is the Respect Party's Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow in London. He won the seat after his expulsion from the Labour Party for his opposition to the Iraq War. Christopher Hitchens is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and a visiting professor of liberal studies at the New School in New York.

Iran-Iraq War
This video was made in remembrance of all the brave Iranian soldiers who put their lives on the line and fought for 8 years to defend Iran in a war that was imposed on us by the aggressor Saddam Hussein.
Video made by: The Evil Persian
===========================
Background history:
The Iraqi Imposed war began when Iraq invaded Iran on 22 September 1980. Although the Iraqis attacked without formal warning, they failed to make progress and were soon repelled by the Iranians. Despite several calls for a ceasefire by the United Nations Security Council, hostilities continued until 20 August 1988; the last prisoners of war were exchanged in 2003.
Iraq's army was primarily equipped with weaponry it had purchased from the Soviet Union and its satellites in the preceding decade. During the war, it purchased billions of dollars worth of advanced equipment from the Soviet Union, France,[31] as well as from the People's Republic of China, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, and other sources (including Europe and facilities for making and/or enhancing chemical weapons). Germany[32] along with other Western countries (among them United Kingdom, France, Spain (Explosivos Alaveses), Canada, Italy and the United States) provided Iraq with biological and chemical weapons technology and the precursors to nuclear capabilities
The U.S. sold Iraq $200 million in helicopters, which were used by the Iraqi military in the war. These were the only direct U.S.-Iraqi military sales and were valued to be about 0.6% of Iraq's conventional weapons imports during the war.
With more than 100,000 Iranian victims[56] of Iraq's chemical weapons during the eight-year war, Iran is one the countries most severely afflicted by weapons of mass destruction.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish organization dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust, released a list of U.S. companies and their exports to Iraq.
The official estimate does not include the civilian population contaminated in bordering towns or the children and relatives of veterans, many of whom have developed blood, lung and skin complications, according to the Organization for Veterans of Iran. According to a 2002 article in the Star-Ledger:
"Nerve gas agents killed about 20,000 Iranian soldiers immediately, according to official reports. Of the 90,000 survivors, some 5,000 seek medical treatment regularly and about 1,000 are still hospitalized with severe, chronic conditions. Many others were hit by mustard gas..."[57]
Iraq also used chemical weapons on Iranian civilians, killing many in villages and hospitals. Many civilians suffered severe burns and health problems, and still suffer from them. Furthermore, 308 Iraqi missiles were launched at population centers inside Iranian cities between 1980 and 1988 resulting in 12,931 casualties.[56]

British-American, Tony Blair war crimes analysed - spsyed
A peace protestor, David Lawley-Wakelin, 49, interrupted the Leveson Inquiry and said Tony Blair is a war criminal. The anti-war protestor, who is also a documentary film maker, told the court: "this man should be arrested for war crimes. The man is a war criminal". Blair, who has been convicted by a Malaysian tribunal, denied he was a war criminal. Lawley-Wakelin was released without any further action. Blair lied about alleged threats from alleged weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Blair was giving evidence to the Leveson Inquiry into Press Ethics on Monday 28 May 2012. Court officials bundled him out of the room after about 20 seconds to allow Blair to continue weaving more webs of non committal claptrap and lies.
Blair's decision to openly court global media baron Rupert Murdoch to win power and ensure favourable coverage during his decade-long tenure as British prime minister came under scrutiny when he faced a media inquiry on Monday 28 May 2012 in London high court. Murdoch media employees hacked phones and bribed senior British police officers. Blair is a godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace, and claims there was no deal with Murdoch's media empire.
The Alternative Iraq Enquiry was borne from David Lawley-Wakelin, the freelance documentary filmmaker, who was so incensed by the Iraq war that he made the bold statement from the audience of Question Time suggesting whether Tony Blair was a liar who killed millions for grab oil for the USA. Lawley-Wakelin travelled to Iraq to ask if its citizens and military personnel agreed with him. Iraqis agreed that Blair should be in The Hague for crimes against peace. It was not the first time Blair was told that he is a war criminal. Blair remains a proven liar who was also convicted by a Malaysian court.
When Anglo-Americans go to war or plan one, global mass media whores and scoundrels march in lockstep. Their false, misleading, and inflammatory claims are designed to fool, deceive, betray and brainwash billions of readers and viewers, 24/7 for decades. Their managed news duplicity substitutes for real facts, news, opinion and analysis. American and European imperialists, politicians and media liars bear full responsibility for collateral murders and vast destruction around the world. They remain bent on aggression and mass murders. They do not accept anything less than American and Israeli dominance on natural resources, including oil and gas.
NPT permits uranium enrichment as long as countries agree to rigorous monitoring. Iran complies fully with NPT provisions. No weapons development or production evidence exists in Iran. Despite all the hype, Iran's nuclear program has yet to violate international law. IAEA head Yukiya Amano only represents Western interests. Iran's operations are more intensively monitored than any other nation. Washington and Israel prohibit inspections. There is an old poker saying that if you look around the table and cannot figure out who the chump is, it is you.
Those who justify war criminals oppose anyone who prefers peace. They would oppose:
Northern Europe in the early 16th century (Protestant Reformation);
North America in the 1770s (American Revolution);
France in 1789 (French Revolution);
The Haymarket riot, 1886, a violent labor protest led by the Anarchist Movement;
Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement;
SOS (Save Our Sons) an Australian anti-conscription organization;
The Stonewall riots in 1969 protesting the treatment of homosexuals in New York City;
The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989;
The many ACT-UP AIDS protests of the late 1980s and early 1990s;
The Seattle WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999 protest activity against the World Trade Organization;
Anti-globalization Protests in Prague in 2000;
Iraq War Protest, Feb 2003;

We need Congress to do its job. We need real investigation of some of the abuses of authority that are apparently going on at the Executive branch. ... We've never finished the investigation of 9/11 and whether the administration actually misused the intelligence information it had. The evidence seems pretty clear to me. I've seen that for a long time." http://securingamerica.com/node/692

"We're Taking Down Seven Countries in Five Years": A Regime Change Checklist
by Gary Leupp www.dissidentvoice.org, January 17, 2007
Last October in a speech at the University of Alabama Gen. Wesley Clark again recounted his conversation with a general at the Pentagon in November 2001.
I said, "Are we still going to invade Iraq?" "Yes, Sir," he said, "but it's worse than that." I said, "How do you mean?" He held up this piece of paper. He said, "I just got this memo today or yesterday from the office of the Secretary of Defense upstairs. It's a, it's a five-year plan. We're going to take down seven countries in five years. We're going to start with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, then Libya, Somalia, Sudan, we're going to come back and get Iran in five years. I said, "Is that classified, that paper?" He said, "Yes Sir." I said, "Well, don't show it to me, because I want to be able to talk about it."
This was of course just two months after 9-11, when Americans' attention was focused on al-Qaeda and preparations for an invasion of Afghanistan where Osama bin Laden lived as a guest of the Taliban.
Five years and two months have passed. The plan to "take down" all those countries is behind schedule, and has even been modified somewhat. Libya has left the target list due to Muammar Qaddafi's agreement to dismantle his WMD programs in 2003. (Bush has tried to take credit for that, although patient British diplomacy deserves more credit. During Anglo-American negotiations with Libya the British were so disgusted with John Bolton's behavior they asked that Bush's envoy be removed from the talks.) But the U.S. did indeed take down Iraq, and all the other countries listed remain in the crosshairs.
Syria, despite its cooperation with the U.S. against al-Qaeda, has been systematically vilified by a U.S. administration that now refuses to even talk to its government. Soon after Bush's infamous "axis of evil" speech in January 2002, John Bolton added a second tier of Syria, Libya and Cuba to the "evil" list. The anti-Syrian propaganda campaign has been relentless ever since. When no WMD were found in Iraq, some (following an assertion by Ariel Sharon as early as December 2002) suggested that they'd been removed to Syria. Immediately after the assassination of Rafik Hariri in February 2005, Washington -- with no evidence whatsoever -- pointed the finger at Syria. It demanded the withdrawal of Syrian troops in Lebanon, depicting them as an unwelcome oppressive force although they had been deployed there at the request of the Christian-led Lebanese government to help end a civil war.
When the Syrian forces expeditiously withdrew, the U.S. expressed its continued dissatisfaction, accusing Syria of continuing to maintain an intelligence network in the country (as though the U.S. doesn't). The U.S. has consistently accused Syria of harboring former Iraqi Baathist officials (as though there would be anything wrong with providing refuge to officials fleeing an illegally invaded country) and of allowing Arab fighters to cross its border into Iraq. ....
