Hanauma Bay
Hanauma (pronounced "ha-na-OO-mah", in Hawaiian) is a marine embayment formed within a volcanic cone and located along the southeast coast of the Island of Oahu (just east of Honolulu) in the Hawaiian Islands. Hana means 'bay' and uma means 'curve,' rendering "Curved Bay." Though some call it "Hanauma Bay," this is a tautology: Hawaiians simply call this feature "Hanauma". Hanauma is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Island and has suffered somewhat from overuse (at one time accommodating over three million visitors per year). In the 1950s, dynamite was used to clear portions of the reef to make room for telephone cables to be brought in underwater. Some of this can still be seen today, and this section of the bay is called "Cable Channel."

Honolulu è la capitale dello Stato delle Hawaii, il 50º degli Stati Uniti d'America, e si trova sulla costa sud-orientale dell'isola di Oahu, la quale appartiene interamente al distretto chiamato "città e contea di Honolulu" (City and County of Honolulu).
La città di Honolulu si estende su un'area di 272,1 km2 ed ha una popolazione circa 371.657 abitanti, un terzo della popolazione dell'intero distretto, che è invece pari a 1.193.744 (dati del censimento del 2000[1]).

Il nome Honolulu significa "baia (Hono o Hana) riparata", ed è il nome di un villaggio presso uno dei pochi porti naturali delle isole Hawaiane. La popolazione prima del contatto moderno non utilizzava porti, dato che le canoe si arenavano semplicemente sulle spiagge, ma dopo il contatto le Hawaii furono utilizzate dall'industria della pesca con il sandalo e con la baleniera, cui conveniva ancorarsi in porti sicuri, fra cui Honolulu. Il porto naturale è dovuto alla mancanza di coralli alla foce del fiume Nu'uanu, ma è stato ampiamente ristrutturato negli anni.

Nel 1804 il re delle isole Hawaiiane, Kamehameha (1810-1819), iniziatore dell'omonima dinastia, portò la capitale a Waikiki (oggigiorno parte di Honolulu), e nel 1809 a Honolulu. La dinastia terminò nel 1895, insieme al regno delle Hawaii, quando l'ultima sovrana Liliuokalani dovette lasciare il trono per la costituzione della Repubblica delle Hawaii, tre anni dopo annessa agli Stati Uniti.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, il 7 dicembre 1941, nell'omonimo porto militare ebbe luogo l'Attacco di Pearl Harbor, per effetto del quale il Giappone e gli Stati Uniti entrarono in guerra fra loro e contro i rispettivi alleati.
Oggi Honolulu è una destinazione turistica, capace nel 2007 di attrarre 7,6 milioni di visitatori, il 62,3% dei quali sono giunti in aereo atterrando allo Honolulu International Airport[2], che ha due piste direttamente sulla barriera corallina.

Honolulu ha un clima mite semiarido (BSh) secondo la classificazione dei climi di Köppen, gli inverni sono caldi e le precipitazioni scarse durante tutto l'anno[4]. La media delle precipitazioni è infatti di 464,82 mm concentrati principalmente nei mesi da ottobre a marzo, per una media di 270 giorni di sole e 98 di pioggia[5].

Charlie Chan è un personaggio di fantasia protagonista di una serie di sei romanzi dello scrittore Earl Derr Biggers. Il primo romanzo in cui appare è Charlie Chan e la casa senza chiavi del 1925. Earl Derr Biggers aveva preso ispirazione nel creare il carattere del personaggio nel 1919 leggendo un articolo di giornale in cui si parlava di un poliziotto di nome Chang Apana.

Charlie Chan è nato a Canton, in Cina, nella prima metà del 1875. Adolescente, si trasferisce con i genitori a Honolulu (e precisamente sull'isola hawaiana di Oahu) dove inizia a studiare l'inglese sebbene il suo spiccato accento cinese gli permarrà per il resto della vita.[1]
Ancora giovane Charlie lavora come cameriere per Sally Jordan, una donna della buona società hawaiana che lo alleva sotto la propria ala e della quale lo stesso Chan conserverà sempre un ottimo ricordo ("una donna la cui gentilezza sopravviverà mentre la vita scorrerà via"). Abbandonato il posto di lavoro, Chan entrerà a far parte del dipartimento di polizia di Honolulu occupandosi della chinatown della capitale. In breve tempo, il suo acume lo porta a fare carriera giungendo a detective-sergente ed infine ispettore.
Nel 1912 Charlie sposa quella che poi sarà la madre dei suoi quattordici figli e la coppia va ad abitare in una tipica casa hawaiana alle pendici di Punchbowl Hill. Alla fine del 1912 nasce il primo figlio maschio di Chan, Henry Oswald Lee Chan (poi noto col solo nome di Lee).
Le gradi doti di detective di Charlie Chan gli assicurano successi anche al di fuori delle Hawaii portandolo nel 1928 a San Francisco ove viene coinvolto in un caso di omicidio e dove ha l'occasione di incontrare l'ispettore Duff di Scotland Yard che diverrà uno dei suoi migliori amici.
La sua fama lo porta anche oltreoceano lavorando in Francia come membro dell'Intelligence Service americana durante la prima guerra mondiale, giungendo poi sino alla partecipazione come ospite alle olimpiadi di Berlino del 1936.
Nel 1942, mentre gli Stati Uniti sono impegnati nel secondo conflitto mondiale, Charlie Chan abbandona il proprio incarico presso la polizia di Honolulu. Dal 1944 lavora come agente presso il servizio segreto degli Stati Uniti a Washington D.C. col quale continuerà a collaborare sino al 1947, tenendolo per più di un anno lontano dalla sua famiglia che è rimasta a Honolulu. Sono questi anni difficili per Chan il quale perde dapprima la moglie e poi il figlio terzogenito Tommy che muore proprio nel 1947.
Ormai prossimo al pensionamento, Charlie Chan torna a San Francisco, città ove ha conseguito i maggiori successi. Nel 1949, a quasi settant'anni, ha in progetto un viaggio in Inghilterra per lavoro ma Scotland Yard gli consiglia di ritirarsi in una meritata pensione. Egli fa dunque ritorno ad Honolulu in aereo, trovando un mondo cambiato da quando aveva lasciato la città.
Sul finire degli anni '50, a ottant'anni, compie un giro del mondo accompagnato dal figlio primogenito col quale ormai collabora stabilmente alla soluzione di altri piccoli casi che gli si prefiggono da risolvere. Tornato a casa finalmente si dedica alla sua sempre accresciuta famiglia nell'accudire gli altrettanti numerosi nipoti.

Il personaggio di Charlie Chan nacque nel romanzo "The house without a key" (La casa senza chiave, 1925). Nel 1926 iniziò la serie cinematografica omonima che divenne popolare con l'interpretazione di Warner Oland tanto da sopravvivere alla morte di Biggers (1933). Morto Oland, la serie continuò con Sidney Toler che interpretò altri 22 film. Nel 1947, anno della sua morte, la Monogram ne produsse altri sei (1947-49) interpretati da Roland Winters.

La famiglia di Charlie Chan è numerosissima, la prima apparizione di un suo figlio si ha nel film La crociera del delitto (Charlie Chan Carries On, 1931) in cui suo figlio si chiama Henry Chan, ma, come vedremo, non sarà lui il figlio numero uno della serie. Quindi nel film Charlie Chan's Greatest Case (idem, 1933) compare Oswald Chan, ma anche lui non sarà il figlio numero due della serie. Si arriverà a vedere sullo schermo contemporaneamente fino a 12 suoi figli in Il terrore del circo (Charlie Chan at the Circus, 1936)

Pur essendo svedese di origine (vero nome Werner Ölund), l'attore Warner Oland fu scelto per la sua notevole somiglianza con il personaggio creato dal marito, proprio dalla signora Derr Biggers. Nonostante la morte di Oland, avvenuta nel 1937, la 20th Century Fox non interruppe le avventure di Charlie Chan e decise di continuare a produrre la serie (sempre con film di durata inferiore ai 75 minuti). Scritturò l'attore Sidney Toler al quale affiancò l'attore giapponese Sen Yung affidandogli il ruolo di Jimmy Chan (figlio numero due).
