Wide of protesters at Tahrir square STORYLINE: Egyptian army troops and police on Sunday launched a major assault to evict protesters from Cairo's Tahrir Square after two days of clashes. Hundreds of army soldiers and police, backed by armoured personnel carriers, fired tear gas and rubber bullets, then set fire to tents to evict several thousand protesters from the central Cairo square that saw the birth of the popular uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak nine months ago. Police and troops chased the protesters out of most of the square, dismantling their tents, and tearing and burning their banners. A group of men, who looked like members of security forces, were caught on camera setting at least one motorcycle on fire. But the protesters came back after the attack to reclaim the square. By Sunday night, doctors in Cairo were saying three people had been killed in the assault. An estimated 5-thousand people turned out to protest in and around Tahrir Square. The protesters are demanding that the military, which took over from Mubarak in February, quickly announce a date for the handover of power to a civilian government. Doctors staffing two field hospitals in the square said they treated around 700 protesters. An Interior Ministry statement said 55 protesters had been arrested since the violence began on Saturday and a total of 85 policemen were hurt in clashes. The violence reflects rising public anger over the slow pace of reforms and apparent attempts by the ruling generals to retain power over a future civilian government.
