Rip Torn vs Norman Mailer - the infamous "Maidstone" brawl - UNCUT!
This is the final scene from Norman Mailer's MAIDSTONE, in which he played the part of a famous movie director running for President of the United States, who is supposed to be assassinated in the finale.
Mailer concluded principal photography without resolving the final scene, and Rip Torn (playing his brother-in-law and assassin) allegedly decided to take it upon himself to "improvise" an attack by hitting Mailer on the head with a small hammer, drawing blood. Mailer retaliated by tackling and then nearly chewing Torn's ear off as they grappled viciously, and it rapidly escalated into an unhinged on-camera brawl as Mailer's horrified kids screamed in terror.
This is the completely uncut sequence. I have to wonder how "unplanned" it was, as the camera is obviously following Rip closely in the moments before the attack, and if principal photography had finished the day before, why was the camera crew still hanging around filming Rip and the Mailer family? Its more like Mailer knew Rip would pull something for the camera, but didnt know what, and overreacted because he wasnt expecting him to use a real hammer and actually start hitting him with it.
Mailer's verbal reaction is oddly artificial (although the ear chewing is very real and painful to watch) and his wife seems to be lurking just off camera, and then she suddenly starts screaming like a banshee, which is what sets the kids off. Rip seems to be truly apologetic and convincing in the moments after the fight, but Mailer is barely audible and withdrawn and struggling to improvise lame insults to throw back at Torn, who starts becoming irritated at the end by Mailer's weak and phony outrage. It's rather ironic considering his fame as a great writer that he cant come up with snappier dialogue, or deliver it convincingly.
Whatever the circumstances of the event, it's a truly strange and classic sequence indeed, and Rip's demented final facial expressions are unforgettable. I think that when Mailer says "you might as well turn that tape off, because he's a very dull talker, and he never stops as long as anything is running", Rip's hilarious "ooo, OOOO!!" stare and point response was probably his way of saying that Mailer was being hypocritical.

Rip Torn Arrested for Armed Bank Robbery - Diggnation Daily
That guy is having a time. According to E Online, "Emmy-winning actor Rip Torn was arrested Saturday for allegedly breaking into a bank in Salisbury, Conn., where he's a resident. Police described the incident as a booze-inspired bank job. In a statement, cops say they responded to an alarm at 9:40 p.m. Friday and found Torn "with a loaded revolver, and was highly intoxicated." The many charges against the 78-year-old Men in Black star include carrying a firearm while intoxicated, carrying a pistol without a permit, first-degree criminal trespass, first-degree burglary, and third-degree criminal mischief." 2012 UCI DH # 3 - Fort William, Santa Cruz Syndicate
BRYCELAND PODIUMS AT FORT WILLIAM!
Fort William, Scotland
June 10, 2012
Santa Cruz Syndicate’s Josh Bryceland had confidence all week and carried it through to his final race run taking the fifth spot on the podium at the third round of the UCI World Cup Downhill Series. Greg Minnaar came 6th and Steve Peat was 77th as he attempted a race run after suffering a badly torn hamstring muscle the day before.
Fort William was dry and dusty all week and the midges were out in full force! Fans were as enthusiastic as ever and crowds swarmed the hill as much as the midges. The mechanics had the Shimano/Fox equipped V-10’s dialed each day for practice and the boys were training and getting up to speed together. They had fun on the track walk when Peaty had a BBQ up on the track for a feature for “This Is Peaty” . The week was unfolding well.
Qualifier day spirits were high, but on the last training run Steve had a crash and injured himself. His front wheel washed out and when it slid his legs spread apart and he felt a pop. Rolling to the bottom of the hill Steve couldn’t walk into the medical tent so he rolled on in. Upon examination it was determined that he had a bad tear of his left hamstring. Wanting to keep the possibility of racing open he chose to do the qualifier by just rolling out of the start gate (which is all he needed to do as a top 20 protected rider to qualify). Greg ended up qualifying 6th knowing he could make more time and Josh’s form netted him a 7th place qualifier.
Not having had any rain in six weeks it was no surprise that race day would be the day to rain! Steve didn’t practice in the morning while waiting to see if he would be up for the challenge of the race. He got a good taping from first aid and with pain meds onboard he decided to race. Out of the gate he was going for it giving it a proper go and feeling fast. Then he went down on a wet bridge and had to walk back up to get his bike. He carried on, but wanted to stay out of the way of the next few riders so he cruised from there. Josh took to the course and riding very well and moved into the 3-man hot seat to wait. Greg started off attacking the top and managed to hit a rock and damage his chain ring, thus inhibiting his effort for the rest of the run. He gave it the best he had but the chain was off by the bottom where he could have put the hammer down and just missed the podium by .08 seconds, but was stoked for teammate Bryceland as he was 5th scoring his second career UCI World Cup podium!
Greg says, “ I’m obviously disappointed with finishing 6th but at the same time it could have been worse. I slammed a rock really hard quite high up on the track and bent my chain ring. My chain stayed on for most of the race but derailed towards the bottom. It was just a stupid mistake but could easily happen because of the ever-changing course with the rain. The great positive for the weekend was seeing Ratty podium in his home country!”
Steve reflects on his week, “Mix bag of feelings for me after Fort William. I felt awesome on my Santa Cruz V-10 in practice but had an unlucky fall on my last run before qualifying. I managed to do a Bambi on ice and ripped my hamstring pretty badly!! I had to roll out the gate in the qualifier so I could manage the pain and try to ride finals. With no practice Sunday morning and a little rain, I didn't know how to attack my run and ended up slipping off the first wooden bridge and over a turn (same happened at Worlds in 07!!!). So, all in all, you can imagine how pissed off I am. Other than that the crowds were unreal again and thanks to the medics, Kathy Sessler and the Syndicate crew for getting me back on the hill. Hitting the Physio hard from now till MSA!!
Still buzzing from his podium finish Josh says, “Fort William weekend was a lot of fun. Over the last two races there has been a bit of bad luck for me and my team and friends, but it was nice to end it off with a podium result! The V-10 has never felt better down the Fort and the new Fox forks are unbelievable. Thanks a lot to the Syndicate and everyone who has helped me get on top of another podium from Rob Copeland, Dan Critchlow, my girlfriend Becky and my family! Looking forward to keeping the ball rolling into Canada!!”
Josh moves up in the overall points to 9th, Greg stays in 2nd 85 points behind Gwin and 70 points ahead of Gee. Steve drops to 26th overall with 156 points.
The next two World Cups are just around the corner and Steve is working on rehabbing the hamstring as much as possible before MSA.

Blood. Flesh. Madness. Music. Mystery. A black glove holding a bloody knife. A stylish bella donna stripping nude for her killer. These are the familiar elements of the giallo, Italy’s own peculiar brand of bloody pulp fiction: a Mediterranean blend of detective stories, slasher flicks, and sexy ‘70s high-fashion shows that are beloved for their stylishness and sensuality. These films are overflowing with creatively conceived and executed violent set-pieces, killer soundtracks that fans still obsessively collect, and visual delights of all forms -- men, women, clothes, cars, lamps, doorstops, everything is beautiful. So beautiful. To celebrate this most cinematic of horror genres, the Cinefamily presents ten rare screenings, including uncut 35mm prints of Dario Argento and Sergio Martino films flown in from Italy, and a sneak preview of the new French homage to the giallo, Amer!
Series co-presented by Cinespia.

Dario Argento Double Feature:
Deep Red (uncut!)
shown with
Opera
Deep Red - 8:00pm
Dario Argento fans love arguing over whether this or Suspiria is his best film, but there’s a good case to be made that this isn’t just his finest achievement but also the best giallo ever made, period. David Hemmings (in one of his best roles) plays an English pianist who witnesses the brutal murder of his psychic neighbor and is drawn into a nightmarish web of clues involving grisly children’s drawings, a nasty Christmas double homicide from the past, a ghoulish lullaby, and a rising body count (including one standout scene swiped by John Carpenter for Halloween). Driven by Goblin’s ferocious and legendary rock score, this all-time classic features some of the scariest images Argento ever put on film (brace yourself for the dummy!) and works like gangbusters with an audience on the big screen; don’t even think of missing this one, proudly presented here in its 30-minutes-longer, richer uncut Italian version in a very rare 35mm screening.
Dir. Dario Argento, 1975, 35mm, 126 min.
Opera - 10:30pm
Largely considered to be his last truly great work, Dario Argento's Opera possesses most of the stylistic hallmarks the mad Italian director is known for: crazy camera movements, unconventional scoring and song placement, tricked-out lighting and Hitchcock-on-PCP sequences of suspense and violence. The story is simply a reworking of “Phantom of The Opera” by way of the giallo, the genre Argento had undisputably mastered at this point in his career. His longtime musical colloborator Claudio "Goblin" Simonetti is back to do some scoring, this time with superstar producer Brian Eno in tow, which is a good thing considering how central the music is to the story. The film has some true standout moments of classic, hyper-creative Argento imagery, such as the scene in which a woman's eyes are taped open with needles as she’s forced to watch the killer brutally stab someone to death. Does that sound like a good time to you? Then you need to get yourself to the theatre, 'cause this is one opera that won't put you to sleep!
Dir. Dario Argento, 1987, 35mm.

Umberto Lenzi Triple Feature:
Paranoia
shown with
Eyeball
and
Dirty Pictures
Paranoia - 8:00pm
Also known as Orgasmo, this Italian-French co-production written and directed by Umberto Lenzi is one of the sexiest, yet most undervalued gialli of its time. Don’t go in expecting a double-digit body count or an unseen killer wearing shiny leather gloves; Paranoia is a perverse game of cat-and-mouse played by wealthy widow Carroll Baker (throwing herself into the role with naked abandon) and dubious houseguests Lou Castel and Colette Descombes. Rated X in the U.S. for Baker’s copious nude scenes, this mindbending drive-the-widow-crazy caper is capped by a deliciously cynical sting-in-the-tail that is molto-Lenzi.
Dir. Umberto Lenzi, 1969, 35mm, 91 min.
Eyeball - 9:45pm
With its abundance of empty-headed victims and suspects, thumping, cheeky Bruno Nicolai score, and trendy lesbi-antics, Eyeball is a tasty slice of giallo provolone for any fan of cheese, Italian style. Playing like an insane mash-up of Ten Little Indians and If It’s Tuesday, This Must be Belgium, this Italian-Spanish co-production follows a progressively shrinking busload of tourists through sunny Barcelona as a red-gloved killer with a penchant for eyeball-plucking takes their lives and their left eyes. On its own terms, this ludicrously slash-happy outing makes for energetic and eye-popping viewing, a poorly dubbed treat for fans of Eurotrash at its trashiest.
Dir. Umberto Lenzi, 1975, 35mm, 91 min.
Dirty Pictures - 11:30pm
Leave it to Italian genre king Umberto Lenzi to find the worm in the big juicy apple of ‘70s free love and permissiveness. Sup
