Second Place in the Antiques Roadshow Top Ten Items
From the 2010 season premiere of the US Antiques Roadshow, on PBS. It is the second highest appraisal value ever given on the show. This 18th-Century Qianlong Jade Collection from the 18th century Qing Dynasty was acquired between the late 1930's and through the 1940s, by her father while he was serving in the military as a liaison. The guest recalls that as a child, she "heard that some of them had imperial seals," and was curious to learn more. What a surprise it was, to learn that they were the most valuable items to ever be shown on the North American syndication of the show. Original air date: January 4th, 2010 Appraiser: James Callahan Appraised on: June 27th, 2009 (in Raleigh, North Carolina) Episode #1401 (Raleigh, Hour 1)

Antiques Smuggling - Turkey
March 1997 With more ancient Greek settlements than Greece and more Roman ruins than Italy, Turkey is an archaeologist's treasure trove.... and a plunder's paradise. A multi million dollar black market in antiquities threatens to rob Turkey of its heritage. The Lycian, Roman and Byzantine Empires have all left their mark on Turkey's red soil. Statues, coins and ornate tombs are seized upon by professional smugglers, shipped out the country and offloaded in Germany. Director of the anti-smuggling police unit explains, "this business is done by culturally under-developed people. The real point is to become rich quickly". He then estimates that his force intercepts over 95% of the artefacts. But in Mugla prison, we interview a notorious smuggler who confirms that the police claim is "impossible". He also maintains that many smuggled artefacts wind up in London auction houses, Christies and Sothebys. A white statue of Hercules exists in two parts. Poverty stricken farmers sell to the smugglers. During a flash flood, Adnan discovered an ancient tomb in his backyard and he admits that, "people ignore selling to museums because they pay you such little money". Seventh Place in the Antiques Roadshow Top Ten Items
It was the quintessential Antiques Roadshow find. In 2002, a man named Ted from Tucson presented appraiser Don Ellis with a simple striped wool blanket, saying that it had been hanging over the side of a rocking chair in his bedroom for years, ever since he had inherited it from his aunt. His first clue that it might be something valuable? The Roadshow producers assigned burly security men to escort him around before his television taping. Sure enough, when the cameras rolled, Ellis informed Ted that he was in possession of a "national treasure." Turns out, the blanket his grandmother had put at the foot of his bed on cold nights when he was a boy earned the highest valuation ever conferred at that time. This first-phase Ute style Navajo chief's blanket, woven between 1840 and 1860, one of the oldest, rarest and finest examples ever to hit the market—one of only 50 or so known. And how much did Ellis think it might fetch at auction? Somewhere between $350000 and $500000. On camera, Ted from Tucson could be seen wiping away tears of joy. He and his wife sold the blanket to bankroll their retirement house. The weaving ended up in a major American museum. And dealers I spoke with report that the Roadshow publicity helped peel a few more old blankets off of people's rocking chairs and into the market. Navajo blankets of the classic era (mid-to-late 19th century) have long been valued. As Nancy Blomberg, curator of native arts at the Denver Art Museum, points out, "They were ...

This Is My Home
On an unseasonably warm November night in Manhattan on our way to get ice cream, we stumbled upon what appeared to be a vintage shop, brightly lit display window and all. As we began to walk in, a man sitting out front warned us that we were welcome to explore, but nothing inside was for sale. Our interests piqued, we began to browse through the collections the man out front had built throughout his life. This is a story of a man and his home.

Digital Analogue
Since the introduction of digital technology the relationship between camera and photographer has altered dramatically. Speed and accessibility have come at the expense of mystery, intimacy and tactility - qualities exclusive to analogue photography. Initially, and in reaction to this cultural atrophy, I composed a piece of music made entirely from sounds that I had recorded from a collection of antique cameras. Constructed using the digital composition software Reason, this piece carried a strong hip hop feel and seemed to connect past with future technologies. To accompany this track I created a video response that captured traditional, analogue techniques yet also had a strong contemporary theme.
This short film is made entirely with stop motion animation, with over six thousand still photos shot and then edited together. The cameras are literally ‘brought to life’ here, while image composition and lighting is as carefully considered in each video frame as they would be for individual photo shots.

FOR HIRE! – BANGALORE RICKSHAW
Green, yellow, black. They are the blood in the veins of Bangalore: the 450.000 rickshaws and their drivers. Knocked together from bits and pieces, decorated, ready for the junk heap or carefully maintained like antique cars, the vehicles are as charismatic as their owners, who brave the monstrous traffic of this metropolis daringly, sleepy, chattering or stoic, making sure the passanger's trip from A to B will be full of memorable experiences.
Based on days of riding around in rickshaws and drawings made locally, this animation captures the tough workaday life of a rickshaw driver, seen through the eyes of a European visitor.
Result of a one month trip to Bangalore, India as part of the project "The Law of the Market" at the University of Arts Berlin Weißensee, 2011
