Plot
In 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period they were the heartbeat on every hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers. Forty-one years after they played their first note on a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story, with the help of archival footage, still photos, narration, interviews, re-creation scenes, 20 Motown master tracks, and twelve new live performances of Motown classics with the Brothers backing up contemporary performers.

Although the Crusaders could not have known it at the time, their recording of "Street Life" (which features a memorable vocal by Randy Crawford) was a last hurrah for the 20-year old group. Their recordings of the next few years would decline in interest until the band gradually faded away in the '80s. However this particular set is well worth picking up for the 11-minute title cut and there is good playing by the three original members (Wilton Felder on tenor, soprano and electric bass, keyboardist Joe Sample and drummer Stix Hooper) along with guitarist Barry Finnerty; horn and string sections, plus additional guitarists are utilized on Sample's commercial but listenable arrangements

The scarcity of any Marvin Gaye on DVD is reason enough to welcome The Real Thing: In Performance 1964-1981, but the fact that this 16-track compilation is superb in nearly every respect is cause for genuine celebration. What we get is not just a collection of songs but a career trajectory, tracing Gaye's evolution from a cog in the wheel that was Berry Gordy's Motown into a mature artist with his own matchless vision. The early (i.e., from the 1960s) stuff includes songs like "Hitch Hike," "Can I Get a Witness," and "Ain't That Peculiar"; watching Gaye mime these hits on American Bandstand and elsewhere in front of all-white studio audiences and perky go-go girls is sometimes a little silly, but the sound is terrific, thanks to the DVD producers' decision to replace the TV tracks with audio remastered from the original stereo recordings. It isn't until the eighth track, a version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" from 1969, that we get any actual live performances, but the wait proves well worth it. With "What's Going On," Gaye proved that he could defy Gordy's formulaic approach and prosper both financially and creatively while heeding the dual voices of his conscience and his muse, and the 1972 performance of that song is quite simply transcendent, with the great James Jamerson on bass and a middle section, featuring just Gaye's voice and piano with conga backing, that liner notes writer Rob Bowman rightly calls "perhaps the high point of this whole DVD." A steamy "Let's Get it On," recorded in Belgium in '81, is nearly as good. Those two clips alone justify buying this collection, but overall, despite a couple of minor missteps (the promo film for "A Funky Space Reincarnation" is pretty hokey), The Real Thing: In Performance 1964-1981, which also includes several interview segments between tunes and a section that features only the vocal tracks from the first seven numbers, is an invaluable confirmation of a truly great musician. --Sam Graham

Stu Brooks has been a Gotham mainstay since arriving in the early 2000’s. His massive sense of groove has led him to consistent work with some of the hottest Hip-Hop/R&B; producers and artists in the world. And yet, his work with Peeping Tom and his own band, Dub Trio, show that Stu’s versatile playing also has an aggressive side.
With the growing popularity of his band we thought the time was right to talk about Stu’s far-ranging projects and Dub Trio’s innovative stage set-up (each band member has the ability to alter each other’s sounds on the fly).
Something that I’ve always noticed about your playing is that you refuse to be pigeonholed. If someone only knows you through Dub Trio they probably wouldn’t guess that is you on so many Hip-Hop tracks!
Yeah, I’ve done a bunch of recording with artists on G Unit Records, which is 50 Cent’s record label. I’ve recorded with 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck and Mobb Deep. There is a song that I did that was on the radio quite a bit called, So Seductive featuring 50 Cent which is on the Tony Yayo record and that was a big hit about two years ago; especially in New York. I’ve also done some work with Slick Rick, Method Man, Redman and Rahzel from The Roots.

When doing a session for rap artists such as 50 Cent, how much input do you have?
They don’t really give too much input. A lot of the time it’s just replacing samples; maybe with a little interpretation. There might be a situation where you have a groove without a bassline but the bassline is sort of obvious. And then there are times when you create something totally from scratch. It’s different every time but it’s usually open for interpretation.
One time I found myself on a Tupac record from a session where I had no idea it was for him! I thought I was doing it for somebody else! That was interesting because they put me in with the producer who had a drum machine and basically we just started from nothing and I guess it worked out. That was the last I heard of it; it was really weird.
In a super star situation, is the artist there in the studio with you?
Sometimes but usually not. I was doing a lot of the sessions during mixdown because they were mixing the record and decided that it need a little bit more low-end.
And how about your work on the Rock/Jazz side of things?
I work with Eric Krasno on his solo project. He is the guitar player for Soulive. I’m a member of the Adam Deitch project; he’s a great drummer who’s known for playing in Scofield’s band. I’m also a band member of Peeping Tom, which is Mike Patton’s group.
Is that an ongoing project with Peeping Tom?
Right now it’s on hiatus; we’re in between records.
What is the background on Dub Trio?
Dub Trio has been a rhythm section for 10 years now. We have four albums out, the most recent being Another Sound Is Dying that came out January 29th of this year.

Dub Trio is unique in that the entire band is available as a rhythm section for hire.
Yeah, we were a rhythm section that backed up different artists for about 5 years before we started Dub Trio. I’m originally from Toronto and I moved down to Boston to go to Berklee, where I met Dave Holmes who is the guitar player for Dub Trio. We had a band called Actual Proof and we moved to New York minus our drummer. Once we got to NYC, we met Joe Tomino (Dub Trio drummer) and he joined that band. It existed for another few years but we wanted to make music as a living and we had enough time in our schedules to do other stuff. It turned out that we would get hired as a trio to do demos for producers/songwriters or back up singers and do gigs as a rhythm section for hire.
After awhile we started getting tired of being in a band that had a singer; I think we just wanted a chance to play our own stuff as a trio. We started booking some gigs in town doing improvised music; instrumental music and eventually we started getting some attention. The more we played, the more we were adding Dub flavors to our sound and developed the concept that we have now. Eventually somebody put the name “Dub Trio” on the marquee; we had been a nameless band and “Dub Trio” described us better than anything else! And soon after that Lucas Cooper from the label ROIR, which is actually right across the street from Aguilar, offered to do an album with us. But it wasn’t until the second record when Dub Trio transitioned from a side-project to the main priority.
Did the session work for the rhythm section come from the producers that you had worked with individually in the past?

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 documentary film directed by Paul Justman. It recounts the story of The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unheralded studio musicians who performed on Motowns' recordings from 1959 to 1972. The film was inspired by the 1989 book Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson, a bass guitar instruction book by Allan Slutsky, which features the bass lines of James Jamerson.
The film covers the Funk Brothers' career via interviews with surviving band members, archival footage and still photos, dramatized re-enactments, and narration by actor Andre Braugher. The film also features new live performances of several Motown hit songs, with the Funk Brothers backing up Gerald Levert, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan, and Montell Jordan.
The impetus behind making the film was to bring these influential players out of anonymity. In addition to bassist James Jamerson, The Funk Brothers consisted of the following musicians: Jack Ashford (percussion); Bob Babbitt (bass); Joe Hunter (keyboards); Uriel Jones (drums); Joe Messina (guitar); Eddie Willis (guitar); "Pistol" Allen (drums); "Papa Zita" Benjamin (drums); "Bongo" Brown (percussion); Johnny Griffith (keyboards); Earl Van Dyke (keyboards); and Robert White (guitar).

Marvin Gaye - The Real Thing: In Performance (1964--1981) Recorded 1964--1981 DVD Released: April 3, 2006 The scarcity of any Marvin Gaye on DVD is reason enough to welcome The Real Thing: In Performance 1964-1981, but the fact that this 16-track compilation is superb in nearly every respect is cause for genuine celebration. What we get is not just a collection of songs but a career trajectory, tracing Gaye's evolution from a cog in the wheel that was Berry Gordy's Motown into a mature artist with his own matchless vision. The early (i.e., from the 1960s) stuff includes songs like "Hitch Hike," "Can I Get a Witness," and "Ain't That Peculiar"; watching Gaye mime these hits on American Bandstand and elsewhere in front of all-white studio audiences and perky go-go girls is sometimes a little silly, but the sound is terrific, thanks to the DVD producers' decision to replace the TV tracks with audio remastered from the original stereo recordings. It isn't until the eighth track, a version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" from 1969, that we get any actual live performances, but the wait proves well worth it. With "What's Going On," Gaye proved that he could defy Gordy's formulaic approach and prosper both financially and creatively while heeding the dual voices of his conscience and his muse, and the 1972 performance of that song is quite simply transcendent, with the great James Jamerson on bass and a middle section, featuring just Gaye's voice and piano with conga backing, that liner notes writer Rob Bowman rightly calls "perhaps the high point of this whole DVD." A steamy "Let's Get it On," recorded in Belgium in '81, is nearly as good. Stu Brooks has been a Gotham mainstay since arriving in the early 2000’s. His massive sense of groove has led him to consistent work with some of the hottest Hip-Hop/R&B; producers and artists in the world. And yet, his work with Peeping Tom and his own band, Dub Trio, show that Stu’s versatile playing also has an aggressive side.
With the growing popularity of his band we thought the time was right to talk about Stu’s far-ranging projects and Dub Trio’s innovative stage set-up (each band member has the ability to alter each other’s sounds on the fly).
Something that I’ve always noticed about your playing is that you refuse to be pigeonholed. If someone only knows you through Dub Trio they probably wouldn’t guess that is you on so many Hip-Hop tracks!
Yeah, I’ve done a bunch of recording with artists on G Unit Records, which is 50 Cent’s record label. I’ve recorded with 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck and Mobb Deep. There is a song that I did that was on the radio quite a bit called, So Seductive featuring 50 Cent which is on the Tony Yayo record and that was a big hit about two years ago; especially in New York. I’ve also done some work with Slick Rick, Method Man, Redman and Rahzel from The Roots.

When doing a session for rap artists such as 50 Cent, how much input do you have?
They don’t really give too much input. A lot of the time it’s just replacing samples; maybe with a little interpretation. There might be a situation where you have a groove without a bassline but the bassline is sort of obvious. And then there are times when you create something totally from scratch. It’s different every time but it’s usually open for interpretation.
One time I found myself on a Tupac record from a session where I had no idea it was for him! I thought I was doing it for somebody else! That was interesting because they put me in with the producer who had a drum machine and basically we just started from nothing and I guess it worked out. That was the last I heard of it; it was really weird.
In a super star situation, is the artist there in the studio with you?
Sometimes but usually not. I was doing a lot of the sessions during mixdown because they were mixing the record and decided that it need a little bit more low-end.
And how about your work on the Rock/Jazz side of things?
I work with Eric Krasno on his solo project. He is the guitar player for Soulive. I’m a member of the Adam Deitch project; he’s a great drummer who’s known for playing in Scofield’s band. I’m also a band member of Peeping Tom, which is Mike Patton’s group.
Is that an ongoing project with Peeping Tom?
Right now it’s on hiatus; we’re in between records.
What is the background on Dub Trio?
Dub Trio has been a rhythm section for 10 years now. We have four albums out, the most recent being Another Sound Is Dying that came out January 29th of this year.

Dub Trio is unique in that the entire band is available as a rhythm section for hire.
Yeah, we were a rhythm section that backed up different artists for about 5 years before we started Dub Trio. I’m originally from Toronto and I moved down to Boston to go to Berklee, where I met Dave Holmes who is the guitar player for Dub Trio. We had a band called Actual Proof and we moved to New York minus our drummer. Once we got to NYC, we met Joe Tomino (Dub Trio drummer) and he joined that band. It existed for another few years but we wanted to make music as a living and we had enough time in our schedules to do other stuff. It turned out that we would get hired as a trio to do demos for producers/songwriters or back up singers and do gigs as a rhythm section for hire.
After awhile we started getting tired of being in a band that had a singer; I think we just wanted a chance to play our own stuff as a trio. We started booking some gigs in town doing improvised music; instrumental music and eventually we started getting some attention. The more we played, the more we were adding Dub flavors to our sound and developed the concept that we have now. Eventually somebody put the name “Dub Trio” on the marquee; we had been a nameless band and “Dub Trio” described us better than anything else! And soon after that Lucas Cooper from the label ROIR, which is actually right across the street from Aguilar, offered to do an album with us. But it wasn’t until the second record when Dub Trio transitioned from a side-project to the main priority.
Did the session work for the rhythm section come from the producers that you had worked with individually in the past?
Yeah, somebody recommended us to Rob Fusari who produced Bootylicious and No, No, No for Destiny’s Child and all of these ‘Pop’ a

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 documentary film directed by Paul Justman. It recounts the story of The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unheralded studio musicians who performed on Motowns' recordings from 1959 to 1972. The film was inspired by the 1989 book Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson, a bass guitar instruction book by Allan Slutsky, which features the bass lines of James Jamerson.
The film covers the Funk Brothers' career via interviews with surviving band members, archival footage and still photos, dramatized re-enactments, and narration by actor Andre Braugher. The film also features new live performances of several Motown hit songs, with the Funk Brothers backing up Gerald Levert, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan, and Montell Jordan.
The impetus behind making the film was to bring these influential players out of anonymity. In addition to bassist James Jamerson, The Funk Brothers consisted of the following musicians: Jack Ashford (percussion); Bob Babbitt (bass); Joe Hunter (keyboards); Uriel Jones (drums); Joe Messina (guitar); Eddie Willis (guitar); "Pistol" Allen (drums); "Papa Zita" Benjamin (drums); "Bongo" Brown (percussion); Johnny Griffith (keyboards); Earl Van Dyke (keyboards); and Robert White (guitar).

Stu Brooks has been a Gotham mainstay since arriving in the early 2000’s. His massive sense of groove has led him to consistent work with some of the hottest Hip-Hop/R&B; producers and artists in the world. And yet, his work with Peeping Tom and his own band, Dub Trio, show that Stu’s versatile playing also has an aggressive side.
With the growing popularity of his band we thought the time was right to talk about Stu’s far-ranging projects and Dub Trio’s innovative stage set-up (each band member has the ability to alter each other’s sounds on the fly).
Something that I’ve always noticed about your playing is that you refuse to be pigeonholed. If someone only knows you through Dub Trio they probably wouldn’t guess that is you on so many Hip-Hop tracks!
Yeah, I’ve done a bunch of recording with artists on G Unit Records, which is 50 Cent’s record label. I’ve recorded with 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck and Mobb Deep. There is a song that I did that was on the radio quite a bit called, So Seductive featuring 50 Cent which is on the Tony Yayo record and that was a big hit about two years ago; especially in New York. I’ve also done some work with Slick Rick, Method Man, Redman and Rahzel from The Roots.

When doing a session for rap artists such as 50 Cent, how much input do you have?
They don’t really give too much input. A lot of the time it’s just replacing samples; maybe with a little interpretation. There might be a situation where you have a groove without a bassline but the bassline is sort of obvious. And then there are times when you create something totally from scratch. It’s different every time but it’s usually open for interpretation.
One time I found myself on a Tupac record from a session where I had no idea it was for him! I thought I was doing it for somebody else! That was interesting because they put me in with the producer who had a drum machine and basically we just started from nothing and I guess it worked out. That was the last I heard of it; it was really weird.
In a super star situation, is the artist there in the studio with you?
Sometimes but usually not. I was doing a lot of the sessions during mixdown because they were mixing the record and decided that it need a little bit more low-end.
And how about your work on the Rock/Jazz side of things?
I work with Eric Krasno on his solo project. He is the guitar player for Soulive. I’m a member of the Adam Deitch project; he’s a great drummer who’s known for playing in Scofield’s band. I’m also a band member of Peeping Tom, which is Mike Patton’s group.
Is that an ongoing project with Peeping Tom?
Right now it’s on hiatus; we’re in between records.
What is the background on Dub Trio?
Dub Trio has been a rhythm section for 10 years now. We have four albums out, the most recent being Another Sound Is Dying that came out January 29th of this year.

Dub Trio is unique in that the entire band is available as a rhythm section for hire.
Yeah, we were a rhythm section that backed up different artists for about 5 years before we started Dub Trio. I’m originally from Toronto and I moved down to Boston to go to Berklee, where I met Dave Holmes who is the guitar player for Dub Trio. We had a band called Actual Proof and we moved to New York minus our drummer. Once we got to NYC, we met Joe Tomino (Dub Trio drummer) and he joined that band. It existed for another few years but we wanted to make music as a living and we had enough time in our schedules to do other stuff. It turned out that we would get hired as a trio to do demos for producers/songwriters or back up singers and do gigs as a rhythm section for hire.
After awhile we started getting tired of being in a band that had a singer; I think we just wanted a chance to play our own stuff as a trio. We started booking some gigs in town doing improvised music; instrumental music and eventually we started getting some attention. The more we played, the more we were adding Dub flavors to our sound and developed the concept that we have now. Eventually somebody put the name “Dub Trio” on the marquee; we had been a nameless band and “Dub Trio” described us better than anything else! And soon after that Lucas Cooper from the label ROIR, which is actually right across the street from Aguilar, offered to do an album with us. But it wasn’t until the second record when Dub Trio transitioned from a side-project to the main priority.
Did the session work for the rhythm section come from the producers that you had worked with individually in the past?

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 documentary film directed by Paul Justman. It recounts the story of The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unheralded studio musicians who performed on Motowns' recordings from 1959 to 1972. The film was inspired by the 1989 book Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson, a bass guitar instruction book by Allan Slutsky, which features the bass lines of James Jamerson.
The film covers the Funk Brothers' career via interviews with surviving band members, archival footage and still photos, dramatized re-enactments, and narration by actor Andre Braugher. The film also features new live performances of several Motown hit songs, with the Funk Brothers backing up Gerald Levert, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan, and Montell Jordan.
The impetus behind making the film was to bring these influential players out of anonymity. In addition to bassist James Jamerson, The Funk Brothers consisted of the following musicians: Jack Ashford (percussion); Bob Babbitt (bass); Joe Hunter (keyboards); Uriel Jones (drums); Joe Messina (guitar); Eddie Willis (guitar); "Pistol" Allen (drums); "Papa Zita" Benjamin (drums); "Bongo" Brown (percussion); Johnny Griffith (keyboards); Earl Van Dyke (keyboards); and Robert White (guitar).

James Lee Jamerson (January 29, 1936 – August 2, 1983) was an American bass player. He was the uncredited bassist on most of Motown Records' hits in the 1960s and early 1970s (Motown did not list session musician credits on their releases until 1971), and he is now regarded as one of the most influential bass players in modern music history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
A native of Edisto Island (near Charleston), South Carolina, Jamerson moved with his mother to Detroit, Michigan in 1954. He learned to play the double bass at Northwestern High School, and he soon began playing in Detroit area blues and jazz clubs.
Jamerson continued performing in Detroit clubs after graduating high school, and his increasingly solid reputation started providing him opportunities for sessions at various local recording studios. Starting in 1959 he found steady work at Berry Gordy's Hitsville U.S.A. studio, home of the Motown record label. There he became a member of a core of studio musicians who informally called themselves The Funk Brothers. This small, close-knit group of musicians performed on the vast majority of Motown recordings during most of the 1960s. Jamerson's earliest Motown sessions were performed on double bass, but in the early 1960s he switched to mostly playing electric bass - a Fender Precision.

Bob Babbitt (born Robert Kreinar in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American bassist, most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records' studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966–1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records afterwards. Also in 1968-1970, with Mike Campbell, Ray Monette and Andrew Smith he formed the band Scorpion. Babbitt traded off sessions with original Motown bassist James Jamerson. Over the course of his career, Babbit has played on over 200 Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hits, for Motown and other labels as well.[citation needed]
Among Babbitt's most notable bass performances are "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" by Stevie Wonder, "War" by Edwin Starr, "The Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" and "Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye, "Band Of Gold" by Freda Payne, "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" and Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) by The Temptations. He has participated in hundreds of other hits, including "Little Town Flirt" by Del Shannon, "I Got a Name" by Jim Croce, "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight & the Pips, "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey & the Detroit Guitar Band, "Supernatural Thing" by Ben E. King and "(The) Rubberband Man" by The Spinners.

Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984), better known by his stage name Marvin Gaye (he added the 'e' as a young man), was an acclaimed American singer-songwriter and musician with a three-octave vocal range, who achieved major success in the 1960s and 1970s as an artist for the Motown Records label. He was shot dead by his father on April 1, 1984.
Starting his career as a member of the doo-wop group The Moonglows in the late 1950s, he ventured into a solo career after the group disbanded in 1960, signing with Motown Records subsidiary, Tamla. He started off as a session drummer, but later ranked as the label's top-selling solo artist during the 1960s. He was crowned "The Prince of Motown" and "The Prince of Soul". because of solo hits such as "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Ain't That Peculiar", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and his duet singles with singers such as Mary Wells and Tammi Terrell.
His work in the early- and mid-1970s included the albums, What's Going On, Let's Get It On, and I Want You, which helped influence the quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, and slow jam genres. After a self-imposed European exile in the early 1980s, Gaye returned on the 1982 Grammy-Award winning hit, "Sexual Healing" and the Midnight Love album before his death.

Stevland Hardaway Morris (born May 13, 1950 as Stevland Hardaway Judkins), known by his stage name Stevie Wonder, is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, a child prodigy who developed into one of the most creative musical figures of the late 20th century. Blind since shortly after birth, Wonder signed with Motown's Tamla label at the age of eleven, and continues to perform and record for Motown to this day.
Among Wonder's best known works are singles such as "Superstition", "Sir Duke", "I Wish" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You". Well known albums also include Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life. He has recorded more than thirty U.S. top ten hits and received twenty-two Grammy Awards, the most ever awarded to a male solo artist. Wonder is also noted for his work as an activist for political causes, including his 1980 campaign to make Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a holiday in the United States. In 2009, Wonder was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace. In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists to celebrate the US singles chart's fiftieth anniversary, with Wonder at number five.
