Spineless Opuntia to combat desertification
This spineless, edible cactus is a very interesting plant for smallholder farmers in the drylands. Easy to grow from vegetative paddles, growing with a minimum of water in dry areas. Can be used to combat desertification, to limit erosion. A nice food crop (paddles, fruits) and fodder plant for livestock.

Opuntia Ficus Indica
www.slimdynamics.com Opuntia ficus-indica is a specie of cactus. It is crop-plant with a high importance in the agriculture of arid and semiarid parts of the world. Opuntia is farmed mainly as a fruit harvest, but also for the vegetable nopales and other uses. Most culinary references to the "prickly pear cactus" are citing to this species. The name "tuna" is also employed for the fruit from this cactus, and for Opuntia generally (according to Alexander von Humboldt, it was a word with Haitian origin admitted into the Spanish speech circa 1500AD) Opuntia has various medicinal uses - including being used as a hangover cure. Lately, extracts for the cactus pear fruit has demonstrated to have antioxidative attributes and can cause decrease of DNA damage in human peripheral lymph cells. This extract has become a possible source of raw material for pharmaceutic and operational food industries. [4] The shoots of O. ficus-indica have been shown to contain at least some mescaline. The plant is considered a pest species in parts of the Mediterranean due to its ability to spread rapidly beyond the zones it was originally cultivated in. In Hebrew, the plant is referred to as "tzabar." The flowers and stems are antispasmodic, diuretic and emollient. The split stems have been bound around injured limbs as a first aid measure. The flowers are astringent and are used to reduce bleeding and treat problems of the gastro-intestinal tract, especially diarrhoea, colitis and irritable bowel ...

Coastal Prickly Pear, Opuntia littoralis, San Diego, California
The prickly pear cactus refers to a group of cacti species under the Opuntia genus, a genus native to the Western hemisphere. Prickly pears have flat, rounded cladodes (what we think of as leaves on these plants) that are armed with two kinds of spines: large, smooth, fixed spikes and small, hairlike prickles called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. The large spines are for macro damage against large animals that try to touch the plant, and the small glochids are for causing micro damage to irritate animals that try to eat the cladodes. The prickly pear cactus is one of the iconic plants of deserts in the Americas. In many survival videos and shows it has been demonstrated that most of the plant is edible after you carefully process the cladodes with a hunting knife to get rid of the outer layer, and with it, the glochids. Fire is the preferred method of getting rid of all spines while simultaneously sterilizing the meal. The taste of the cladode "meat" has been compared to cucumber.

Opuntia for food and fodder
The well-known prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) is a fantastic plant species to combat land degradation (desertification). It grows on almost all the arid and semi-arid soils and can easily propagated by using individual pads as cuttings. Fruits and pads are used as food and fodder. Several medicinal uses enhance the value of this plant. It can become a noxious weed if not trimmed in time.

Dana Ruh - Opuntia [BQD013]
CROCOSMIA X sees Dana Ruh engaging with the sound of House. RAMARIA FLAVA initiates a desperate groovy beat with clear and energetic vocals that open us out into peaktime. The track was made for us to dance! OPUNTIA the bloomy Intro of this EP comes with the voice of the artist Yorba. Calm and serene she tells us about her passion for rythm and sound while cumulatively the floor of funky house beats expands. The continuiation we find on the B-side is deep, dubby and clear. The beat wriggles around the hookline and here we have the track DEL SUR. The sound of an organ goes ahead with different voices.
