A 70-feet-tall Norman tower and some other stonework is all that's left of a great castle built exactly 900 years ago and around which grew up the town of Bridgnorth in Shropshire.
The castle was occupied for around five centuries, surviving at least four lengthy sieges until finally it fell to Cromwell's army in the English Civil War.
He left it much as it is today, leaning at an angle of 15 degrees ¿ three times more than the famous leaning tower of Pisa. The rest of it is gone - destroyed or plundered - along with all of the town's early records.
The people of Bridgnorth asked Time Team to try to paint a picture of what it might have looked like in its heyday.

Another replacement for my original upload (Boult/LPO) which was removed by Lyrita/Nimbus. Almost the same photographs, in the same order (a few new ones to accommodate the longer performance here). Like the others I've re-uploaded recently, we have instead Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
Lt. George Butterworth MC numbered among many promising young British composers whose lives were snuffed out in the First World War (shot by a German sniper, his body never recovered amongst the carnage, hence the poppies in the first slide). He died in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. An immense loss to his family and friends, and to British music, his compositions were of the first rank.
His "Shropshire Lad" Rhapsody - a sort of orchestral postlude to his earlier song cycle "A Shropshire Lad" – employs a normal sized symphony orchestra, and was first performed on 2 October 1913 at the Leeds Festival, conducted by Arthur Nikisch. It was influential upon Vaughan Williams (A Pastoral Symphony), Gerald Finzi (A Severn Rhapsody) and Ernest Moeran (First Rhapsody).
I love Shropshire a great deal, but alas I have no photographs of my own of that beautiful English County. As an alternative, I chose photographs I took in various parts of the Peak District (Derbyshire, and Staffordhire) England - not dissimilar places in their bucolic appeal.

Shropshire
Shropshire (/ˈʃrɒpʃər/ or /ˈʃrɒpʃɪər/; alternatively Salop; abbreviated, in print only, Shrops; demonym Salopian /səˈloʊpjən/) is a county in the West Midlands of England. It borders Powys and Wrexham in Wales to the west and north-west, Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the south-east and Herefordshire to the south. Shropshire Council was created in 2009, a unitary authority taking over from the previous county council and five district councils. The borough of Telford and Wrekin has been a separate unitary authority since 1998 but continues to be included in the ceremonial county.
The county's population and economy is centred on five towns: the county town of Shrewsbury, which is culturally and historically important and is located close to the centre of the county;Telford, a new town in the east which was constructed around a number of older towns, most notably Wellington, Dawley and Madeley, which is today the most populous; and Oswestry in the north-west, Bridgnorth just to the south of Telford, and Ludlow in the south. The county has many market towns, including Whitchurch in the north, Newport north-east of Telford and Market Drayton in the north-east of the county.

Another replacement for my original upload (Boult/LPO) which was removed by Lyrita/Nimbus. Almost the same photographs, in the same order (a few new ones to accommodate the longer performance here). Like the others I've re-uploaded recently, we have instead Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
Lt. George Butterworth MC numbered among many promising young British composers whose lives were snuffed out in the First World War (shot by a German sniper, his body never recovered amongst the carnage, hence the poppies in the first slide). He died in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. An immense loss to his family and friends, and to British music, his compositions were of the first rank.
His "Shropshire Lad" Rhapsody - a sort of orchestral postlude to his earlier song cycle "A Shropshire Lad" – employs a normal sized symphony orchestra, and was first performed on 2 October 1913 at the Leeds Festival, conducted by Arthur Nikisch. It was influential upon Vaughan Williams (A Pastoral Symphony), Gerald Finzi (A Severn Rhapsody) and Ernest Moeran (First Rhapsody).
I love Shropshire a great deal, but alas I have no photographs of my own of that beautiful English County. As an alternative, I chose photographs I took in various parts of the Peak District (Derbyshire, and Staffordhire) England - not dissimilar places in their bucolic appeal.

The Retro Lab's Spring Break was an 896 mile, 4 day adventure which saw us attempt to travel from Lands End to the Lake District via Wales, the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales, without using the motorway.
