Agra Fort, U. P. Tourism, India
Much before the Mughal conquests, the "Badalgarh" [Cloud Fort] ,built by Raja Badal Singh, a Rajput chief, existed in Agra, where the Agra Fort stands today. [Ref : Forts and Palaces of India by P.V.Begde pg.136]
Certain facts and beliefs like the statue of two stone elephants that guarded the main entrance of the fort, gives credence to the Rajput origin of the fort and Amar Singh gate , named after Raja Amar Singh Rathore the elder son of Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur give credence to the Rajput origin of the Fort.
Abul Fazal, the court historian at Akbar's court mentions in his 'Ain-a-Akbari' that an old, Pathan Fort existed in Agra before the Mughals came to power.
Also, pulling down a fort and building a new one on its site involved a lot of labour and time and therefore it was quite understandable that the captured citadels were renovated and fortified as per the specifications and requirements of the new occupants ; which also applies to the Agra Fort.
The Agra Fort has withstood many sieges and the onslaught and ravages of times. A further input to fortify its existence to pre --Mughal period is mentioned in the 'Tarik-i-daudi', which states that this citadel was used as a state prison during the time of Kanishka. [Ref: Forts and Palaces of India by P.V.Begde pg.136-137]
The belief that the fort existed during the time of Ashoka the Great, is also given strength by the discovery of the remains of a short length of wall unearthed close to the Jahangiri Mahal, which is claimed to be of a Jain or Buddhist relic. [Ref: Forts and Palaces of India by P.V.Begde pg.137; as observed by the historian Keene.]
The fort belonged to a period prior to Akbar's coming to power is also admitted in a publication which states.... 'Traditions assert that the old fortress of Badalgarh was altered and adopted to his requirements by Akbar"
The "Badshahnama" and the Ai --i --Akbari, gives its time of completion as eight years in the period 1565 -- 1571 AD.

Agra Fort - the Mughal Citadel
Agra Fort, a Mughal Citadel has imposing Mughal style of art and architecture and was constructed by the third Mughal Emperor Akbar during 1565 and 1573 on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh. It is situated on the west bank of the Jumna River, about 2km upstream from the Taj Mahal. Akbar built the fort of sandstone; his grandson Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, constructed palaces of white marble within the fort itself. Shah Jahan was imprisoned in Agra Fort following the coup of his son, Aurangzeb, and died here in 1657.

[HD] AGRA CITYSCAPE
Agra ( Hindi: आगरा, Urdu: آ گرہ) a.k.a. Akbarabad is a city on the banks of the river Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India.
With a population of 1,686,976 (2010 est.), it is one of the most populous cities in Uttar Pradesh and the 19th most populous in India. Because 80 percent of the city's sewage flows into Yamuna River, it is 20th most polluted city in India.
The city finds mention in the epic Mahābhārata where it was called Agrevaṇa, or 'the border of the forest'.
Legend ascribes the founding of the city to Rājā Badal Singh, a Sikarwar Rajput king (circa 1475), whose fort, Badalgarh, stood on or near the site of the present Fort.
It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Tāj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpūr Sikrī, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Agra, India
Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna River in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It finds mention in the epic Mahābhārata where it was called Agrevaṇa, or 'the border of the forest. Legend ascribes the founding of the city to Rājā Badal Singh (around 1475), whose fort, Badalgarh, stood on or near the site of the present Fort. However, the 11th century Persian poet Mas'ūd Sa'd Salmān writes of a desperate assault on the fortress of Agra, then held by the Shāhī King Jayapala, by Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni. Sultan Sikandar Lodī was the first to move his capital from Delhi to Agra in the year 1506; he died in 1517 and his son Ibrāhīm Lodī remained in power there for nine more years, finally being defeated at the Battle of Panipat in 1526.
