A flautist or flutist is a musician who plays an instrument in the flute family.

The choice of "flautist" (from the Italian flautista, from flauto, and adopted due to eighteenth century Italian influence) versus "flutist" is a source of dispute among players of the instrument. "Flutist" is the earlier term in the English language, dating from at least 1603 (the earliest quote cited by the Oxford English Dictionary), while "flautist" is not recorded before 1860, when it was used by Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Marble Faun. While the print version of the OED does not indicate any regional preference for either form, the online Compact OED characterizes "flutist" as an American usage.^[1]

Richard Rockstro, in his three-volume treatise The Flute^[2] written in England in 1890, uses "flute-player." He also uses "fluteist" and the less popular "flutomater".

The American player and writer Nancy Toff, in her The Flute Book, devotes more than a page to the subject, commenting that she is asked "Are you a flutist or a flautist?" on a weekly basis. She prefers "flutist": "Ascribe my insistence either to a modest lack of pretension or to etymological evidence; the result is the same." Toff, who is also an editor for Oxford University Press, describes in some detail the etymology of words for "flute," comparing OED, Fowler's Modern English Usage, Evans' Dictionary of Contemporary American Usage, and Copperud's American Usage and Style: The Consensus before arriving at her conclusion: "I play the flute, not the flaut; therefore I am a flutist not a flautist.^[3]

The first edition of the OED lists fluter as dating from circa 1400 and Fowler's Modern English Usage^[4] states that "there seems no good reason" why flautist should have prevailed over fluter or flutist. However, according to Webster's Dictionary of English Usage,^[5] flautist is the preferred term in British English, and while both terms are used in American English flutist is "by far the more common choice."

Echoing the Toff quote above, James Galway summed up the way he feels about "flautist," saying, "I am a flute player not a flautist. I don't have a flaut and I've never flauted."^[6]

In the Flautist or flutist? section in his book Proper Flute Playing (ISBN 0-7119-8465-4 p.56), Trevor Wye records the following conversation: "What do you do, young man?" "I'm a flautist", he replied. A long pause, then... "What exactly is it that you do with floors?" He then observes "Perhaps we should try flutist; it's simpler, self-explanatory and widely understood."

Holly Cook-Tanner is an American figure skater. She is the 1990 World and U.S. bronze medalist. She was coached by Chris Sherard.^[1] She now coaches at the South Davis Recreation Center in Bountiful, Utah. Cook is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.^[1] She is a graduate of Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah, class of 1989.^[2]

Tim Barsky is an American musician from Boston, Massachusetts.^[1] Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, he is a beatboxer-instrumentalist, playwright-performer, and urban circus artist.^[2] He is a graduate of Brown University with a degree in Islamic and Judaic religious studies. He also studied at the Berklee School of Music and with the Chasidic folklorist and archivist Fishel Bresler.^[1]

Trained as a traditional Jewish storyteller,^[3] his use of contemporary culture within traditional forms resulted in The Bright River,^[4] an underground theatrical piece that achieved cult status within the Bay area.^[5] In 2007 he was awarded a $50,000 Gerbode Emerging Playwright's Grant^[6] for Track in a Box, a hip hop and circus based play about junkie police, strippers and giant puppets which was set to premiere in Fall 2009.

His work has been produced and performed at The Brava Theatre (2006–08), Climate Theatre (2008; also artist-in-residence), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (2005), Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley (2004–05),^[1] Traveling Jewish Theatre in San Francisco (2004), The Exit Theatre in San Francisco (2003), The Finborough Theatre in London (2002), and AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island (1997–2001).

A former line-producer for the Burning Man Arts Festival, and a member of the Hybrid Project at San Francisco's Intersection for the Arts, he has been a guest artist and lecturer at the Royal College of Art (London), Stanford University, RISD, and Oberlin College; a featured speaker at The American Press Institute; and a beatboxing instructor in San Francisco juvenile detention facilities.

He was the artistic director of City Circus from 2007 - 2010 and a co-founder of Vowel Movement Beatboxers.

Thijs Van Leer (pronounced: /tɛis vɑn lɪər/; born 31 March 1948) is a Dutch musician, singer and composer, best known for heading the Dutch progressive rock band, Focus, as primary vocalist, Hammond organ player, and flautist. He also yodels and whistles. In his later years, Van Leer went on to release many solo albums which were also classical music and jazz-based.

Van Leer was born in Amsterdam, and received his first flute at the age of eleven from his father, a classical flautist. He studied History of Art at Amsterdam University; after when he began studying flute and composition at the Amsterdam Conservatorium. He received a degree for flute from Geneva Conservatoire and also studied piano, orchestration (with Rogier van Otterloo) and organ (with Anthon van der Horst).

While still at school, van Leer led a jazz group on piano. He went on to play the flute and sing with the Shaffy cabaret group. In 1969 he joined Martijn Dresden (bass) and Hans Cleuver (drums) to form a trio that covered songs by Traffic and backed other Dutch musicians, as well as playing their own material. Later in the year guitarist Jan Akkerman joined, completing the initial line-up of Focus. They released several albums in the early 1970s.

Van Leer headed Focus through several line-up changes, and by 1977 he was the only remaining original member. The group disbanded in 1978. Van Leer also worked and toured with Spanish singer Miguel Ríos, playing keyboards and flute, and appearing on three of Ríos' albums: Extraños en el escaparate (Strangers in the Shopwindow, 1981), Rock & Ríos (1982; double album), and El rock de una noche de verano (Midsummer Night's Rock, 1983).^[1] In 1985, van Leer briefly reunited with Akkerman to make Focus 1985. In 2002, van Leer created a new Focus line-up, which has since released the albums Focus 8 and Focus 9 / New Skin. A British tour was undertaken in spring 2006.

He also appeared as a guest musician on the album, Into the Electric Castle, by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's musical project Ayreon.

In 2008 Explore Multimedia released van Leer's first solo album in nearly a decade, The Home Concert. The album featured recordings made in his living room as he played material for Focus 9. The album is exclusively available via the Internet,^[2] and at concerts.

Van Leer has also experimented with sacred vocal music.

In 2010, he played a concert with Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno to celebrate 40 years of imaginative music^[3]

Greg Pattillo (born July 1, 1977) is a beatboxing flautist originally from Seattle, Washington but now operates in Brooklyn, New York. He was lauded by The New York Times as "the best person in the world at what he does."^[1] His performance videos on YouTube, showcasing "beatbox flute," have been viewed more than 20 million times.^[2]

Pattillo earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Joshua Smith, the principal flautist of the Cleveland Orchestra. After a summer spent as the acting principal flute of Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Pattillo moved to San Francisco where he was a founding member of the Collaborative Arts Insurgency and the 16th and Mission Thursday Night gathering for performers. Pattillo enjoys freelancing as a soloist, and is the flautist of the group PROJECT Trio. PROJECT Trio is a chamber music ensemble, based in Brooklyn, NY. The trio features Greg Pattillo on Flute, Eric Stephenson on cello, and Peter Seymour on bass.^[2]

In June 2007, Pattillo was named one of 21 winners of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's "Music Under New York" program. Among other things the award gives Pattillo an official permit, of sorts, to play music in the subway.^[3]

Pattillo was also seen on an episode of Nickelodeon's TV series, iCarly (and was said to be Sam's cousin that was not in jail) and has videos and recordings on iCarly.com. He also appeared as a guest on one episode of Lily Allen and Friends in the UK shown on BBC Three.

In May, 2010, he premiered a concerto for Beatbox Flute, composed by Randall Woolf and performed with the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra.

Greg currently works with his band PROJECT Trio, along with doing many showcases and preparing for his 2010 tour.
