Abandoned Coal Mine Land Reclamation Project - Bee Hollow Conservation Area
The Bee Hollow Reclamation Project reclaimed approximately 10 acres of abandoned coal mine lands near Excello in Macon County. These lands were surface mined prior to the 1950's. The reclamation site is on public property owned by the Missouri Department of Conservation, known as the Bee Hollow Conservation Area.

Earth from Space - Reclaimed lands
Earth from Space is presented by Kelsea Brennan-Wessels from the ESA Web-TV virtual studios. In this second edition, we look at a Landsat-5 image of the intertidal Wadden Sea and reclaimed lands in the Netherlands. ESA has recently opened archived Landsat data for use by the scientific community, free of charge.

Abandoned Mined Land (AML) reclamation program for former coal mines
A national program to remediate safety and environmental hazards from past coal mining was created by the passage of federal law -- The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA).
SMCRA, Title 4, Abandoned Mined Land Reclamation http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/30/25/IV
The administering agency is the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE or OSM) within the U.S. Department of the Interior.

(I was with OSM from April 1978 to May 1995; this helped get me to leave):
On the night of March 4, 1995, an entire eastbound lane of Interstate 70 in Guernsey County, Ohio suddenly collapsed into a 10-foot crater swallowing a car and nearly several others plus a semi-truck --- the entire interstate being closed for six months until $4.4 million in repairs were made. On September 15, 1994, Robert Mooney, an acting field director for the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, had sent the state a letter expressing concern for a worsening situation. The state ignored his request for an investigation of voids in the abandoned coal mines beneath the highway. More: http://groups.google.com/group/bob-mooney/web/i-70-collapse

A routine bridge inspection last fall showed damage from mine subsidence under the bridge on the east side of the river, said Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Kauffman. He said the subsidence has had "a very slight impact" on the bridge, which was built in 1974. "It is still able to carry the loads it was built for," Kauffman said. "It is a very small dip." IDOT is coordinating efforts with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Office of Mines and Minerals. "We have devised a plan to stabilize the structure by drilling a series of bore holes to the depth of the abandoned mine and injecting a concrete grout mixture to fill any voids left from coal mining operations," Kauffman said. Department of Natural Resources spokesman Chris McCloud said the agency's Abandoned Mined Land Reclamation Division said a DNR contractor will be at the bridge Monday, weather permitting, to begin filling the area east of the river with concrete.

Singapore's Sand Wars
Singapore, one of the world's most prosperous and fastest growing economies, is being accused of expanding its coastline with illegally dredged sand from neighboring states.
Singapore has been importing sand for years and its territory has increased by over 20% in the last half century, but sand imports are now threatening the regional ecosystem and harming its economy.
Singapore is one of the smallest 20 nations in the world and it is growing fast in every way, too.
A key global shipping hub, its vast port complexes have been relentlessly expanding in the sea due to land reclamation.
Professor Chou Loke Ming from the Biological Science Center of the National Institute of Singapore says, "We have been taking sand from our hills and then, when there are no more hills left, we have been dredging sand from sea beds, and now most of it is been imported from neighboring countries."
Singapore is today the world's largest importer of sand, literally the foundation of the tiny state's extraordinary economic growth.
But with other countries in the region, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, banning sand exports, reclaiming more land has become a difficult task for this tiny island city-state. At least legally -- there are some accusations that sand smuggling is making up the shortfall.

The Films of Ernest Kleinberg: The Netherlands -- Struggle for Land (1969)
A dramatic first hand look at the development of flood control and land reclamation in twentieth century Holland: the struggle of people to protect their land from natural disaster.
Ernest Kleinberg (1910-1980) was born in Breslau, Poland. He grew up in Vienna, where he became a photographer for American news agencies and Life magazine. In March 1938 he was arrested by the Gestapo for photographing Hitler's march into Vienna. Released six weeks later thanks to pressure from American friends, he escaped to New York where he resumed photography and rescued his entire family from Nazi Austria. In the early 1950s he became a self-taught film producer. He subsequently completed more than 25 documentary movies.

Land Reclamation - Garden Project
A look into an area that had been a dumping site for lawn debris and and unused firewood. With many years of decomoposition taking place, the soil under the rotting vegetation looks and smells like a gardening winner. As to what will be planted there, still not sure. Whatever it is will need to be fenced, or any shoots will be gone. The fact that it will not have the sun for the fullest amount each day needs to be considered.
And, there were a few surprises, some pieces of aromatic cedar that will be perfect for some experimental projects. We'll be taking a look at small sized gardening, and an approach to growing your own. Vegetables, that is!

Dr. Mohan K Wali, The Global Imperative of Ecosystem Reclamation: Part 1
At the inaugural lecture for the Land Reclamation International Graduate School, Dr. Anne Naeth, Director, LRIGS, University of Alberta, introduced Dr. Mohan Wali, Ohio State University. Dr. Wali is one of the pioneers of modern-day reclamation science. In Part 1 of his address, Dr. Wali points out President Johnson's statesmanship in the 1960's focused attention on the environment and reclamation. Dr. Wali then shows why the lessons from the science of ecology provided the principles that shape reclamation science today.
Dr. Mohan Wali is Professor Emeritus at the School of Environment and Natural Resources, Ohio State Environmental Science Graduate Program, John Glenn School of Public Affairs,The Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio USA.
