Where have all the Elephants gone? - Africa
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Going undercover, this powerful report exposes the devastation wrought by Africa's rampant ivory trade. Fuelled by China's voracious appetite, it could lead to the extinction of elephants within 20 years. "It's absolutely a war. It's an untold war", says the ranger Sean Willmore who's fighting back in the global battle against illegal ivory poaching. In an outdoor cafe in Tanzania's commercial capital Dar Es Salaam, dirty deals are being brokered daily by black-market ivory traders. In the past tree years the country has lost forty per cent of its elephants. Fuelled mainly by China's burgeoning, cash-rich middle class, demand is spiralling out of control. "In the last five years the demand for ivory has just exploded. It's well organised. Syndicates with billions of dollars. It's just like cocaine and heroin", says Pratik Patel, a conservationist and safari leader. Both Kenya and Tanzania have vowed to stamp out poaching but the potential profits are corrupting both politics and law enforcement. "There's an element of corrupt individuals in the government who are also involved with these people", says Pratik, who's been targeted alongside his family. For those on the frontline of animal preservation, time is fast running out to save the herds. ABC Australia

Urge Thailand to Ban the Trade of Ivory
Every day across Africa, wild elephants are being slaughtered to meet the insatiable demand for ivory. Entire herds are being poached out of existence to supply the illegal trade of ivory carvings and trinkets in Asia. The scale of illicit activity is staggering in places like Thailand. Poachers and organized crime syndicates there are making millions of dollars a year, turning this southeast Asian nation into the largest unregulated ivory market in the world. Exploiting a legal loophole that permits the sale of ivory from Thailand's domestic elephants, criminals can pass off illegally obtained African ivory as being from domestic sources and get away with selling it on the legal open market. This must stop. Tell Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra she can help save the world's elephants by banning the Thai ivory trade: support.worldwildlife.org

Battle for the Elephants Episode 1: The Plight of the Elephant
Since the opening up of the Chinese market and the growth of its economy, ivory—once a precious material reserved for the ruling elite—has become increasingly available to the growing Chinese middle class. Journalist Bryan Christy explores the ancient Chinese tradition of carving ivory and reveals that what was once left to the hands of skilled artisans is now big business for large-scale carving factories. Petition to Save Africas Elephants Ban Thai Ivory Trade
Every day in the savannas and forests of Africa, elephants are being gunned down for their ivory tusks. Across the continent, tens of thousands of these majestic animals are being slaughtered each year. In many places the species has already been poached to extinction. If we don't act now there may be no wild elephants left. Elephant poaching is being driven by demand for ivory carvings and trinkets in Asia where many consumers think "elephant teeth" simply fall out and re-grow without hurting the animal. The truth is that ivory comes from dead elephants. In Thailand, elephants are revered as sacred. There is a saying that there would be no Thailand without the elephant. But Thailand is also the biggest unregulated market for ivory in the world. Although it is against the law to sell ivory from African elephants in Thailand, ivory from domestic Thai elephants can be sold legally. As a result, massive quantities of illegal African ivory are being laundered through Thai shops. To save Africa's elephants it is essential that Thailand closes this legal loophole. Join us in asking Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to ban all ivory trade in Thailand. Representatives from 176 governments will be meeting in Bangkok March 3-14 to discuss global wildlife trade issues, including the elephant poaching crisis. While the eyes of the world are turned to Thailand, we want to present 1 million signatures to Mrs Sinawatra. Sign the petition and tell the Thai Prime Minister to ban ...

WHITE GOLD Trailer - a Kenyan perspective on elephant poaching and the ivory trade
AEFF is currently working a new film entitled 'White Gold' (the name given to ivory by Chinese traders). This is the promotional trailer we are using to help raise money for the production and dissemination costs of this film. As with all AEFF productions, this film is non-commercial and will be used for educational and awareness-raising purposes only. The film, currently in production, is being made from Kenya's perspective and will be a powerful voice supporting Kenya's opposition to the re-opening of a legal international ivory trade. The film investigates the current status of African elephants, today's unprecedented poaching levels, and the international ivory trade. Working in cooperation with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), eminent scientists and conservationists across Kenya and internationally, the film follows the ivory trail from source to consumer, covering issues never before seen on film and examining the security and economic implications of the illegal ivory trade - and the potential future impact should international ivory trading be legalized by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). As a conservation education tool, the film has three key objectives: (i) when screened in multiple languages at CITES 2013, to encourage the international delegates to vote in support of Kenya's opposition to re-opening the ivory trade -- the result of this vote by the 175 member nations of CITES is critical to the survival of the African ...
