KAMBODSCHA: Schwimmende Dörfer, Leben am Tonlesap See (größter See O-Asien)
------http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGSvf2c1M5s

Tonle Sap Lake, Siem Reap, Cambodia
This clip includes great footage of the boat people living on Tonle Sap Lake. The lake is located in the center of Cambodia. For most of the year Tonle Sap is about a meter deep with an area of about 2,700 square km. During the monsoon season, however, the Tonle Sap river that connects the lake with the Mekong river reverses its flow. Water is pushed up from the Mekong into the lake, increasing its area to 16,000 square km and its depth to up to nine meters, flooding nearby fields and forests. Thousands of people live and subsist on the lake. I visited Tonle Sap as part of a tour of Siem Reap and Angkor Wat in February 2007. The music on the clip is from FreshMusic.com.

Saving Cambodia's Tonle Sap
In Cambodia today, there is increasing concern the nations flowing heart, the Tonle Sap Lake, must be conserved before it is too late.
Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in South-East Asia and is the lifeblood of Cambodias agrarian and fishing society.
However, the regions natural splendour and traditional riparian life are under threat.
While the Cambodian Government has made progress in providing water and sanitation services, water access in the area remains the second lowest in Asia and open defecation continues.
High rates of water-related diseases are reported, with women, children and the elderly in particular suffering from using or consuming untreated water and low standards of hygiene.
NGOs have intervened, and it is the collaborative effort between Engineers Without Borders Australia and Live and Learn Environmental Education that has brought us to the University of Queensland.
Building on a concept proposed by the NGOs, Latrinology Tech, a team of UQ engineering students, are developing a latrine and waste management system that will increase the standard of sanitation of the lakes communities by decontaminating the local water supply.
Latrinology Tech's proposed design is a single-vaulted, ventilated pit latrine that requires oxygen to decompose waste so it can be recycled as compost for agriculture and biogas for cooking and lighting.
While the initial response is positive, lack of funding may negate successful implementation.
The team hopes to release a prototype system for a single family in a stilted or floating home by the end of the year.
The project is a work in progress.
While uncertainty surrounds the final product and its pervasiveness, if successfully implemented, the Tonle Sap community will certainly benefit.

Cambodia - Tonle Sap. Safari Pazola, Indochiny 2011
The Tonlé Sap is combined lake and river system in Cambodia that is also the largest body of water in South East Asia. The Tonle Sap remains relatively small for most of the year, measuring about a meter in depth and covering around 2,700 square kilometers. However, the river that connects to the lake starts to swell during the monsoon season as water that flows from the Mekong river reverses, helping to expand the Tonle Sap up to 16,000 square kilometers with a depth up to 9 meters deep. Surrounding fields become flooded with the floodplains acting as the core breeding ground for the Tonle Sap's plentiful supply of fish. The seasonal flow from lake and river are responsible for creating more than 75% of Cambodia's fresh water fish catch and are estimated to directly support more than 3 million people. The Tonle Sap is also home to many ethnic Vietnamese who have emigrated to Cambodia over the last 50 to 100 years, often to the consternation of the native Cambodian population.
Despite the local ethnic tensions the Vietnamese Floating Village on the Tonle Sap in Siem Reap has become one of the areas more popular attractions with tourists touring the area on boats.

Tonle Sap Lake - Cambodia.mp4
This video is a pretty good representation of what you'll see on the standard ½-day afternoon tour of Tonle Sap Lake, near Siem Reap, Cambodia. On this day, our guide Sowanna Yun stopped at a collection of roadside food stands on the way out to the lake to give us a chance to sample some local delicacies. We tried and liked grilled snake and stir fried grasshoppers but gave a pass to the water beetles. Then it was on to the lake for a ride past fishermen at work, floating houses and house boats. We stopped at one of the mid-lake platforms to have a drink before heading back to Siem Reap right around sunset. Just outside of the town, we stopped to see what Sowanna called a "Cambodian Picnic" with lots of roadside food stalls and even more people who just put down a blanket and snacked the evening away.

There are millions of snakes in this flooded grassland around Tonle Sap lake in Camobodia; most are edible water snakes but some are venomous. Vaana's catch is destined for the biggest snake market in the world but not before his children have had a chance to play.
