Brewing tea Russian-style, with a samovar (RT TV)
Any Russian's best friend. No, not a person, but in the past that's how the Russians treated their samovar. It had a place of honor at the table, and in some homes it still does. SOUNDBITE Konstantin Ziskin, samovar enthusiast, speaking Russian: "Tea from a samovar tastes much better than tea from an electric kettle. It smells of smoke, fresh wood and pine cones." Literally a self-boiler, a samovar has traditionally been used to heat water for tea. And that's how it's done the old way: water from the well, wood chips and a lot of huffing and puffing make up the recipe for a perfect tea time. SOUNDBITE Konstantin Ziskin, samovar enthusiast, speaking Russian: "God, you are so heavy." A teapot filled with brew, or zavarka in Russian, goes on top to stay warm. You then dilute the brew with hot water for just your cup of tea. SOUNDBITE Konstantin Ziskin, samovar enthusiast, speaking Russian: "This all disposes to drinking a tea like the merchants did. This saucer is not right, but there is a special one for tea drinking. And the merchants usually drank tea, holding the saucer on three fingers." And the Russians loved their samovars. More than just a water-boiling device, it was a symbol of home, bringing friends and family together. A small samovar meant for just one person was even dubbed "selfish". Tea time was very much a social thing. PTC: If relatives or friends weren't speaking to each other for some reason, they'd meet for tea to make up and used their samovar as a ...

Semaver - Samovar 1/2 - Ellerin Türküsü
Tea is in our lives from breakfast till late at night. Our tea is ready every hour of the day in summer and winter. You can always drink tea alone or in crowd. Tea culture brought in samovar culture. Being an inseparable part of our tea culture since 19th century, samovar is an important means of living in Vezirkopru. The Vezirkopru Bazaar, built in 1660, is a gift of Ottoman Grand Vizier Koprulu Mehmet Pasha's wife Lady Ayse. Samovar making in this bazaar and its surrounding shops is being practiced for the past 200 years. Vezirkopru is like samovar's nativeland. There are almost forty samovar manufacturers in this historical bazaar. Craftsmen working together here manufacture flat-type samovar unique to this district. Vezirkopru samovar is quite different from rounded Russian samovar. With its shape and practical use, it is more preferred at home, in picnic or in tea-houses than a kettle. To drink samovar tea is living joy in sensing the best flavor at your tongue. People drinking this tea in front of the historical bazaar in Vezirkopru mix this enjoy with their daily chat. Even though the name is of Russian origin, there is a description that no other can replace. When they said in the old times: "fire burns within fire", probably they were trying to tell the difference between a samovar and a kettle. "The room was filled with smell of toast. Samovar was nicely boiling. Ali resembled samovar to a factory with no pain, strike or accident. It only produced smell, steam ...

Russian Greetings and The Samovar - Born Soviet Episode 1
A&K are here to teach you about the Russian culture. Episode 1 covers basic greetings and introduces the samovar. How to Say Hello in Russian: Casual (towards friends) - Privet Semi formal (towards people you have just met or aren't close to) - Zdrastvui Formal (towards elders or people you respect) - Zdrastvuite The proper pronounciation for Samovar is SA-MA-VAR and it literally translates to "self boiler". The Samovar dates back to as early as 1778. It has over the years become popular in Iran and Turkey although the origins are Russian. Drinking tea with friends by the samovar is equivilent to the chinese or japanese tea ceremony and brings much nostalgia to most ex-soviets. Hope you learned something new about your soviet comrades! :) Now go and enjoy some tea! Cloud Guywan Teapot from Samovar
The ultimate tea gadget is also the oldest. Our newly designed guywan or "covered bowl," is one of the oldest brewing devices around, and for good reason - it's also one of the best. It's easy. It's beautiful. And it produces awesome tea. Concentrating the infusion, you'll get stronger aromas, more full bodied taste, and a beautiful view of the leaves unfurling. This new design of an ancient tea brewer fits nearly everybody's hands better, is the perfect hue of cloud white to witness the color of the brew and unfurling leaves, and is the perfect size to properly brew one cup of tea, many, many times. Here is how we like to use this guywan (start with these guidelines, and then experiment on your own): * Pre-warm the cup by adding some hot water to it, and then discarding that water * Brew the tea directly in the cup by adding 2-3 tbsp of dry leaves * Awaken the leaves. For oolongs and puerhs, cover the leaves with some hot water, and then immediately discard that first "rinsed" infusion. Leave the lid on the rinsed leaves * Lift the guywan to your nose and tilt the lid open about 1/2" to release the aroma of the awakened leaves. Take it in. Inhale again and again, savoring this intoxicating scent * Now add some hot water to these leaves, paddle them once or twice with the lid, and then replace the lid to let them steep about 30 seconds * Either start sipping, or, decant the brew into another cup. At the lounges we use the white sencha teacups for decanting. It's great ...
