The World Policy Institute is a New York-based think tank which focuses on the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly connected world. World Policy Journal, fellows, events, and projects provide channels for supporters, experts, and citizens to identify, debate, and develop constructive policy solutions.
The World Policy Institute was founded in 1961 in New York City. The original name was Fund for Education Concerning World Peace through World Law. The origin goes back to the movement of moderate internationalists, which started after World War II. The founders of the institute, H. B. Hollins, a banker, and C. Douglas Dillon, banker and public servant, were influenced by Grenville Clark. Both looked for support from international political figures to prevent future massacres and destruction. In 1963, the name of the institute was shortened to World Law Fund. In 1972 the institute merged with the Institute for International Order, which was founded in 1948 and led by Earl D. Osborn. The newly merged organization was called the Institute for World Order. In 1982 the current name World Policy Institute was given and the "World Policy Journal" was founded. From 1991-2007, the institute was a member of The New School university in New York City. In 2007 the institute became independent.
A policy is a deliberate system of principles to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes. A policy is a statement of intent, and is implemented as a procedure or protocol. Policies are generally adopted by the Board of or senior governance body within an organization whereas procedures or protocols would be developed and adopted by senior executive officers. Policies can assist in both subjective and objective decision making. Policies to assist in subjective decision making would usually assist senior management with decisions that must consider the relative merits of a number of factors before making decisions and as a result are often hard to objectively test e.g. work-life balance policy. In contrast policies to assist in objective decision making are usually operational in nature and can be objectively tested e.g. password policy.
The term may apply to government, private sector organizations and groups, as well as individuals. Presidential executive orders, corporate privacy policies, and parliamentary rules of order are all examples of policy. Policy differs from rules or law. While law can compel or prohibit behaviors (e.g. a law requiring the payment of taxes on income), policy merely guides actions toward those that are most likely to achieve a desired outcome.
World is a common name for the whole of human civilization, specifically human experience, history, or the human condition in general, worldwide, i.e. anywhere on Earth or pertaining to anywhere on Earth.
In a philosophical context it may refer to:
In a theological context, world usually refers to the material or the profane sphere, as opposed to the celestial, spiritual, transcendent or sacred. The "end of the world" refers to scenarios of the final end of human history, often in religious contexts.
World history is commonly understood as spanning the major geopolitical developments of about five millennia, from the first civilizations to the present.
World population is the sum of all human populations at any time; similarly, world economy is the sum of the economies of all societies (all countries), especially in the context of globalization. Terms like world championship, gross world product, world flags etc. also imply the sum or combination of all current-day sovereign states.
An institute is an organisational body created for a certain purpose.
Often they are research organisations (research institutions) created to do research on specific topics. An institute can also be a professional body.
In some countries institutes can be part of a university or other institutions of higher education, either as a group of departments or an autonomous educational institution without a traditional university status such as a "university Institute". (See Institute of Technology)
The word "institute" comes from the Latin word institutum meaning "facility" or "habit"; from instituere meaning "build", "create", "raise" or "educate".
In some countries, such as South Korea and Japan, private schools are sometimes called institutes, rather than schools. In Spain secondary schools are called institutes.
In the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man the term "institute" is a protected word and companies or other organizations may only use the word if they are "organisations which are carrying out research at the highest level or to professional bodies of the highest standing". Furthermore, if a company is carrying on a business under a different name to the company name, that business name must comply with the Business Names Act. Use of the title "institute" requires approval from the Secretary of State. Failure to seek approval is a criminal offence.

This summer marks the centennial of the outbreak of World War I, perhaps the most transformative war in history. While the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars harnessed national populations to the war effort in a way not previously seen since the emergence of the modern states system, WWI combined the mobilization of both populations and industrial power, enhanced by technology, to produce a most lethal form of warfare. WWI also redrew the map of Europe and created the modern Middle East, as it led to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, thereby unleashing nationalism the disruptive characteristics of which still plague us today. It also paved the way for the great ideological conflicts of the 20th century by unleashing ...
Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have denied rumors of a "Cold-War bromance," but evidence of the Trump administration's ties to Russia appears to be piling up. On this week's episode of World Policy On Air, we talk about the future of U.S.-Russia relations with New School Russian expert and World Policy fellow Nina Khrushcheva, great-granddaughter of the late Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Nina Khrushcheva discussed where White House-Kremlin relations go from here in a recent Talking Policy interview: http://www.worldpolicy.org/blog/2017/01/27/talking-policy-nina-khrushcheva-future-us-russian-relations Subscribe to World Policy On Air on iTunes today.

Justin Wolfers, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, took part in the Think Tank Diversity Consortium's (TTDC) first Careers in Public Policy event on May 9, 2015, at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP). As part of the TTDC's mission to increase diversity in the think tank and public policy arena, the event was held to offer high school and first-year college students in the Washington area an opportunity to learn from researchers at internationally known organizations how to prepare for a career in public policy. Wolfers's key advice was to become an expert on one specific issue rather than mediocre in several fields. While economics is not the only option, policymakers are especially interested in advice from economists. Beyond the think...
