The Canadian Tulip Festival / Festival Canadien des Tulipes in Ottawa the capital city of Canada
The Canadian Tulip Festival began after the Second World War, when Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs as a token of friendship in 1945.
Canada had provided asylum for the Dutch royal family during the war and played a strong role in the Netherlands’ liberation. While the royal family sought refuge in Ottawa, Princess Juliana gave birth to Princess Margriet on January 19th 1943 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The Canadian government temporarily declared the room “Dutch soil,” to ensure that the Princess would remain in line for the throne.
The Netherlands continues to give Ottawa 20,000 tulip bulbs every year.
Ottawa’s first Canadian Tulip Festival took place in May 1953 and opened with an inauguration ceremony at Parliament Hill.
The Canadian Tulip Festival has grown into the largest annual display of tulips in North America.
The Canadian Tulip Festival is also a celebration of the return of spring, with over a million tulips in 50 varieties blooming in public spaces across the National Capital Region.

A relaxed kayak ride around Dow's Lake near the Rideau Canal on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year. The air was thick, so humid that breathing alone would leave you sweating. The atmosphere was bustling with activity as people strolled the concrete banks of the canal, children played in the parks and young families splashed by in plastic paddle boats.
The water-craft featured in this video is an inexpensive 2-person kayak rented at the nearby pavilion. This video was shot using a single GoPro HD Hero camera with colour correction and stabilization achieved in post processing.

Dow's Lake
Dow's Lake in Ottawa, Canada is a small man-made lake on the Rideau Canal, situated two kilometres north of Hog's Back Falls in the middle of Ottawa. It is at the south end of Preston Street, just south of Carling Avenue, and just to the west of Bronson Avenue. At the south end of the lake is Carleton University, and to the west is the Dominion Arboretum, at the edge of the Central Experimental Farm.
History
Early settlement
The lake is named after Abram Dow, an American-born settler who came to Ontario in the early 19th Century and who owned land in this area in 1816. Before the construction of the Canal, this area was known as Dow's Great Swamp. The lake was created when a dam was constructed along the north shore (Queen Elizabeth Driveway is now atop the dam) to allow flooding for the canal. Originally, the Rideau Canal was to run north from Dow's Lake, but land speculation and Colonel By's reluctance to reward such speculation resulted in the current location of the canal.

The Montana State Library is soliciting additional public opinion on a proposal to assign the name Lone Coyote Lake to a lake in Flathead County. The lake is near Lone Coyote Trail, north of Church Drive, and about 7 miles northwest of Kalispell as shown on the map at http.//goo.gl/hS597A. Two residents have responded to the initial request for comment with the opinion that the lake has previously been named Moon Lake or Mohn Lake....
