Ari Atoll - Maldives Islands
Ari Atoll is one of natural atolls of the Maldives. It is one of the biggest atolls and is located in the west of the archipelago. The almost rectangular alignment spreads the islands over an area of about 89x30 kilometres. It has been divided in two sections for administrative purposes, Northern Ari Atoll and Southern Ari Atoll consisting of 105 islands. Ari Atoll is part of the zone designated for tourist development in the Maldives. It is roughly a 30 minute seaplane flight away from the Capital Malé.
There are more than 20 islands in the Atoll designated for tourist resorts. Each island resort is self-contained with accommodation and recreational facilities such as tennis court. Scuba diving is the most popular tourist activity in the Maldives. The diving in Ari Atoll is extensive and is often defined by location within the atoll, either North or South.
The main tourist resorts were Ari Beach, Halaveli, Maayyafushi, Twin Islands Resort, Dhoni Mighilli and Twin Island Resort. ( source Wikipedia )

The Atoll performs CREATION STORY
The Atoll, Fort Collins, Colorado performs their song Creation Story for their 2003 DVD.
The Atoll is a World Groove band from Fort Collins, Colorado lead by Crow Tribal member Cary Morin. The Atoll has traveled the US performing at college campuses, festivals, and clubs for much of the past fifteen years. The Atoll has recorded 4 CDs, Dream Marquee in 1993, Unity in 1995, and World Groove in 1997, and most recently Alias, released in 2002. The band recorded a DVD in 2003. The band has been featured to satellite TV subscribers in Tokyo, Japan and has received a number of awards in Colorado. The band co-wrote and performed a stage production entitled Turtle Island in 2000 and 2001. The production and its cast of 50 won the hearts of 1000's of audience members and will soon be available for bookings in a larger region. The music of the Atoll has been described as a free form mix of rock, reggae and other world rhythms. Morin's lyrics are a product of his Native American culture and his diverse musical upbringing. His songs have been featured in soundtracks and stage productions as well as with the Atoll. The band is comfortable sharing the stage with national acts; jam bands, reggae bands and Hip Hop performers from around the nation. The rhythms of drummers Crip Erickson and Pete Knudson have long been a show-stopping favorite. Both drummers, having played music together since childhood, have a connection on stage that borders on telepathic. Bassist Craig Fowler is well known for his ability to hold down the groove with his melodic style of bass playing, often inspiring musical rants that seem to choose their own direction. The Atoll's extended sets roll from song to song and always leave the dance floor enthusiasts rhythmically satisfied.

36. Ontong Java Atoll • Solomon Islands
We have selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to
undergo profound changes within the next few generations.
We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment
Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to
Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve
them.
The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who
live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising
temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change.
Among ambassadors are Joss Stone, Desmund Tutu for more info visit http://www.100places.com.
A Lagoon of Fishermen at the Edge of the World
People have been fishing and gathering coconuts on the isolated tropical Ontong Java Atoll in the far north of the Solomon Islands for at least 2,000 years.
One of the largest atolls in the world, the total land area is a mere 12 square kilometres, most of it less than two metres above sea level. The 122 small coral islands encircle a lagoon measuring more than 2,500 square kilometres. Only two of the largest islands are permanently inhabited, and with a total population of 2,000, this is one of the smallest, most isolated societies in the world.
The islanders live off coconuts and fish. On the larger islands, they cultivate the tropical plant taro, which also forms an important part of their diet. The taro is grown in freshwater swamps artificially deepened to form mulching pits.
The coral reefs and lagoons are home to a rich variety of seafood, and the inhabitants catch sea cucumber to sell on the Hong Kong market. They also exchange copra the dried meat of the coconut for goods and cash.
Climate change may change the atoll completely in less than a century. The coral, the debris of which serves as the foundation of the atoll, functions as coastal protection. Any rise in temperature or increased acidification of the seawater could eventually kill it. A rise in sea level will also cause saline intrusion into the agricultural land and fresh water, and flood the low-lying parts of the islands. The effects on Ontong Java
Atoll, on its people, the seabirds that breed on the islands and the many species of fish that live among the coral would be devastating.
