An editor-in-chief (Editorial Head) is a publication's primary head, having final responsibility for the all operations and policies.^[1][2] He or she heads all the departments of the organization. Additionally, the editor-in-chief is held accountable for delegating tasks to staff members as well as keeping up with the time it takes them to complete their task. The term is generally applied to newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, and television news programs. The term is also applied to academic journals, where the editor-in-chief ultimately decides whether a submitted manuscript will be published in the journal. This decision is made by the editor-in-chief after seeking input from reviewers selected on a basis of relevant expertise.

Typical responsibilities of editors-in-chief include:^[3]

• Cross-checking facts, spelling, grammar, writing style, design pages and photos;
• Rejecting writing that appears to be plagiarized, ghost-written by another sub-editor, or previously published elsewhere;
• Editing any content in question;
• Contributing editorial pieces;
• Motivating and developing editorial staff;
• Ensuring final draft is complete and no area is left empty;
• Handling reader complaints and taking responsibility for resulting issues; and
• For books or journals, cross-checking citations and examining references.

Jill Ellen Abramson (born March 19, 1954)^[1] is the executive editor of The New York Times. Assuming the position in September 2011, she became the first woman in this role in the paper's 160-year history.^[2]

Early life and education[link]

A native of New York City, Abramson received her high school diploma from Ethical Culture Fieldston School and a B.A. in History and Literature from Harvard University in 1976.^[3]

Career[link]

While an undergraduate, she was the Arts Editor of The Harvard Independent, and worked at Time magazine from 1973 to 1976. Subsequently, she spent nearly a decade as a senior staff reporter for The American Lawyer.^[4] In 1986, she was appointed as editor in chief of Legal Times in Washington, D.C., serving for two years. From 1988 to 1997, she was a senior reporter in the Washington bureau of The Wall Street Journal, eventually rising to deputy bureau chief. She became the chief of The New York Times Washington bureau upon her move to the newspaper in 1997.^[4]

Abramson was the Times' Washington Bureau chief during the turbulent period of Spring 2003 during the run-up to the war in Iraq and the Jayson Blair scandal, which led to the resignation of Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald Boyd. Abramson was named to the news Managing Editor position (with co-Managing Editor John M.Geddes) by Raines' successor Bill Keller.^[5]

In 1995, Abramson and her The Wall Street Journal colleague (and fellow Fieldston alumna) Jane Mayer co-authored Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas, which detailed circumstances surrounding the confirmation hearings of Justice Clarence Thomas. Maureen Dowd would later write of having bonded with Abramson during that time.^[6] From 2000–01, she was a professor at Princeton University.^[4] She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001.^[7]

In February 2007, Abramson testified in the perjury trial of Scooter Libby, United States v. Libby. She was called as a defense witness to undercut the credibility of Judith Miller.^[3]

On June 2, 2011, it was announced that Abramson would become the executive editor of the Times in September 2011, replacing Bill Keller who would step down from the position to become a full time writer.^[8]

Abramson was scheduled to address the commencement exercises of Barnard College on May 14, 2012. Her speech was canceled after President Barack Obama requested to speak instead.^[9]

Personal life[link]

In 1981, she married Harvard classmate Henry Little Griggs III. Griggs was then president of Triad, a political public relations company. He is self-described as a “writer, editor and media-relations consultant specializing in nonprofit advocacy campaigns.” They have two children.^[3]

In May 2007, Abramson was seriously injured in a truck-pedestrian traffic accident near the New York Times's Times Square headquarters. She and her husband subsequently filed a lawsuit against the truck's driver, owner and operator.^[3]

Akhlesh Lakhtakia is a professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at the Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on electromagnetic fields in complex materials, such as sculptured thin films, chiral materials,^[1] and bianisotropy.^[2] His recent work on industrially scalable bioreplication,^[3] an emerging form of engineered biomimcry, has promise for harvesting of solar energy.

Akhlesh Lakhtakia was born in Lucknow, India on July 1, 1957, to Servesh Kumar and Gayatri Devi Lakhtakia.

Education[link]

He was schooled in Lucknow (St. Cathedral School), New Delhi (Cambridge School), and Lucknow (St. Francis' High School). Appearing for final examinations in November 1973, at the end of the 11th grade, he was awarded the Indian School Certificate in 1974.

He obtained a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics Engineering from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India in 1979; Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah,^[4] Salt Lake City, USA in 1981 and 1983, respectively.

Academic career[link]

In 1983, Lakhtakia joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University, where he was elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics in January 2004. In 2006, he became the Charles Godfrey Binder (Endowed) Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics.^[5]

He has published more than 650 journal articles; has contributed 18 chapters to research books and encyclopedias; has edited, co-edited, authored or co-authored 16 books and 10 conference proceedings; has reviewed for 111 journals; serves on the editorial boards of four electromagnetics journals; was the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Speculations in Science and Technology from 1993 to 1995; and became the first Editor-in-Chief of the online Journal of Nanophotonics ^[6] published by SPIE from 2007.

Honors and Awards[link]

He served as an international lecturer for the International Commission for Optics and the Optical Society of America; was twice a Visiting Professor of Physics at Universidad de Buenos Aires, a Visiting Professor of Physics at the University of Otago, a Visiting Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Glasgow, and a Visiting Professor of Physics at Imperial College London from 2004 to 2007; headed the IEEE EMC Technical Committee on Nonsinusoidal Fields from 1992 to 1994; and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, SPIE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Institute of Physics (UK). He also served as the 1995 Scottish Amicable Visiting Lecturer at the University of Glasgow.

He received the PSES Outstanding Research Award in 1996, the PSES Premier Research Award in 2008, and the PSES Outstanding Advising Award in 2005. For his research on sculptured thin films and complex-medium electromagnetics, he received the Faculty Scholar Medal in Engineering in 2005, and a Doctor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering from the Banaras Hindu University in 2006. Nanotech Briefs recognized him in 2006 with a Nano 50 Award for Innovation. The University of Utah made him a Distinguished Alumnus^[7][8][9] in 2007. He was named the winner of the SPIE Technical Achievement Award^[10] for the year 2010.

His current research interests lie in the electromagnetics of complex materials, sculptured thin films, carbon nanotubes, nanoengineered metamaterials, biomimetics, and negative refraction. At Penn State, he co-developed a course on green engineering for undergraduate engineering students, as well as a course on fundamentals of engineering principles and design for pre-service elementary schoolteachers.
