The Oldest People in the World 1 of 5 - C4 Health Documentary Award-winning filmmaker Daisy Asquith asks some of the oldest people in the world the question everyone wants answered: what is the secret to long life? As life expectancy continues to soar, more and more of us are living to well over the age of 100. Emma Tillman is 114. Her enormous family visits her in Connecticut for a party: at the last count there were 39 great-grandchildren, 17 great great-grandchildren, 10 great great great-grandchildren and two great great great great-grandchildren. In contrast, 112-year-old Gertrude Baines in downtown LA is the last surviving member of her family. In Japan, active centenarian Tsuru runs a small shop and tends her garden in Okinawa, while over in Portugal, 113-year-old Maria de Jesus has to be wheeled out in a chair to take the sun in the afternoon. Back in England, 111-year-old Henry stresses the importance of having a good sense of humour. This revealing film journeys across three continents to give an extraordinary insight into what it's like to have lived over three centuries. Besse Cooper, the world's oldest person, died Tuesday. She was 116. Cooper died in Monroe, Georgia, about 45 minutes east of Atlanta. Her son Sidney said his mother "had a long, good life. She went very easy." Her best years were when she was in her 80s, he said. Born August 26, 1896, Besse Cooper gained the distinction of being oldest living human from Guinness World Records in January 2011. She briefly moved to second on the list when the record keepers found a woman in Brazil who was 48 days older, but Maria Gomes Valentim died in June 2011, just weeks before her 115th birthday. When asked for her secret, Cooper told the Guinness website: "I mind my own business. And I don't eat junk food." Only eight people have ever been documented to have lived to age 116. The oldest person to have ever lived, according to Guinness World Records, was Jeanne Louise Calment. She died in southern France in 1997 at the age of 122.

World's 'oldest man' dies at 122 after attributing his long life to 'no alcohol, tobacco or women'

A man claimed by Russia to be the oldest in the world has died at the age of 122, said regional officials. Magomed Labazanov was born in 1890, before last tsar Nicholas the Second took the throne, and he was 27 when Lenin seized power in the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, it is claimed. His recipe for long life - which he outlined four years ago - was 'abstaining from alcohol, tobacco - and women.' Despite this he was twice married, divorcing his first wife because she failed to produce any children. A former sawmill worker, he never learned to read of write but said that a 'proper diet' of fruits, dairy products, corn, whey, fruits, vegetables and wild garlic - 'the true nourishment for centenarians' - was also crucial to his longevity. He celebrated his 118th birthday by dancing the Lezginka, a popular Caucasus folk dance. Relatives failed in their mission to enter him in the Guinness Book of World Records because he had no birth certificate or other papers to prove his age. Friends said this was due to the chaos in Soviet times when old church and mosque records were destroyed. A Muslim, he lived in a village in Dagestan in the Caucasus region of southern Russia, an area famed for people surviving to great ages. Aged over 50 when the Second World War began in the USSR, he was uprooted by Stalin and deported to Central Asia, returning in the 1950s. He boasted 18 grandchildren and more than 20 great great grandsons. He outlived three of his four sons.

MONROE, Ga. -- The woman who was listed as the world's oldest person has died in a Georgia nursing home at age 116. Besse Cooper died peacefully Tuesday afternoon in Monroe, according to her son Sidney Cooper. Cooper says his mother had been ill with a stomach virus, then felt better on Monday. On Tuesday he said she had her hair set and watched a Christmas video, but later had trouble breathing. He said she was put on oxygen in her room and died there about 2 p.m. She was declared the world's oldest person in January 2011. In May, Guinness World Records learned that Maria Gomes Valentin of Brazil was 48 days older. Valentin died in June. A Guinness official says the title now belongs to 115-year-old Dina Manfredini, of Johnston, Iowa.

Oldest Person Alive Dies at 116 in Georgia

Besse Cooper, the world's oldest person, has died peacefully at 116 years old. The centenarian, who moved to Georgia to teach shortly after World War I, became the oldest person in January 2011 and is the first Georgian ever to earn that distinction. Her family will hold funeral services this week. Cooper's death at 116 years and 100 days makes her the eighth longest-living person ever. Cooper is succeeded by 115-year-old Dina Manfredini of Johnston, Iowa, who has about seven years to go if she wants to break the world record. Those honors go to Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at 122 years old.
