Chukchi: Where the world ends
The word "Chukchi" means "rich in reindeer". These people who live in the Russian Far East can't imagine their life without the usual Chukchi routine: hunting, cooking, engraving beautiful pictures on walrus tusks and praying with their shaman.

Chukotka. The Arctic Ocean. For hundreds of years, the Chukchi and the Eskimos have lived on its shores, the creators and keepers of the tradition of hunting at sea. It gave rise to the art of carving and engraving, as it provides both food and the raw material on which the images of their harsh reality can be portrayed.
Uelen, a coastal settlement which juts into the sea, where the Arctic Ocean meets the Bering Straits. The world recognises it as the Mecca of the art of bone carving. The men hunt at sea. The women leave for the tundra, to pick roots, berries and herbs. The summers are short in Uelen and the people have to harvest what they can both on land and at sea.
Uelen is an ancient village. Until recently there were original dwellings here. However, they're now being pulled down and replaced with modern houses.
In many respects, life here hasn't changed much over the years. It keeps with tradition and is quiet.
Ivan Seigutegin lives in one of these old houses. He continues to go out to sea, to this very day. On land, however, he is one of Chukotka's most famous carvers and engravers. Ivan is typical of people who live in Uelen -- a sea hunter and a bone carver. Subscribe - never miss a video! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=alunhill

Location of the Chukchi Peninsula in Far East Siberia.
The Chukchi Peninsula, Chukotski Peninsula or Chukotsk Peninsula (Russian: Чукотский полуостров), at about 66° N 172° W, is the northeastern extremity of Asia. Its eastern end is at Cape Dezhnev near the village of Uelen. It is bordered by the Chukchi Sea to the north, the Bering Sea to the south, and the Bering Strait to the east. The peninsula is part of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug of Russia.
The peninsula was traditionally the home of the native Chukchi people, some Eskimo peoples (Siberian Yupiks and Sireniki Eskimos), Koryaks, Chuvans, Evens/Lamuts, Yukagirs, and some Russian settlers.
The peninsula lies along the Northern Sea Route (the Northeast passage).
Industries on the peninsula are mining (tin, lead, zinc, gold, and coal), hunting and trapping, reindeer raising, and fishing.
