Samuel Barber
Samuel Osborne Barber II (March 9, 1910 – January 23, 1981) was an American composer of orchestral, opera, choral, and piano music. He is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century: music critic Donal Henahan stated that "Probably no other American composer has ever enjoyed such early, such persistent and such long-lasting acclaim."
His Adagio for Strings (1936) has earned a permanent place in the concert repertory of orchestras. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music twice: for his opera Vanessa (1956–57) and for the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1962). Also widely performed is his Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (1947), a setting for soprano and orchestra of a prose text by James Agee. At the time of his death, nearly all of his compositions had been recorded.
Biography
Early years
Barber was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of Marguerite McLeod (née Beatty) and Samuel Le Roy Barber. He was born into a comfortable, educated, social, and distinguished American family. His father was a physician; his mother, called Daisy, was a pianist of English-Scottish-Irish descent whose family had lived in the United States since the time of the Revolutionary War. His aunt, Louise Homer, was a leading contralto at the Metropolitan Opera; his uncle, Sidney Homer, was a composer of American art songs. Louise Homer is known to have influenced Barber's interest in voice. Through his aunt, Barber had access to many great singers and songs.

Samuel Barber (minister)
Samuel Barber (1738?–1811), was an Irish Presbyterian minister.
Barber was a native of Co. Antrim. He was the younger son of John Barber, a farmer near Killead. He entered Glasgow College in 1757, was licensed 1761 (on second trials 28 August at Larne) by Templepatrick presbytery, and ordained by Dromore presbytery, 3 May 1763, at Rathfriland, Co. Down, where he ministered till his death. He was a good Latinist, Tacitus being his favourite author; his Greek was thin; he was somewhat given to rabbinical studies, having collected a small store of learned books on this subject. He is best known for the public spirit with which he threw himself into the political and ecclesiastical struggles of his time. Teeling considers him "one of the first and boldest advocates of the emancipation of his country and the union of all her sons."
Minister and colonel
When Lord Glerawley disarmed the Rathfriland regiment of volunteers in 1782, the officers and men chose Barber as their colonel in his stead. In this double capacity he preached (in regimentals) a sermon to the volunteers, in the Third Presbyterian Congregation, Belfast. He sat in the three volunteer conventions of 1782, 1783, and 1793, as a strong advocate of parliamentary reform, catholic emancipation, and a revision of the tithe system, the revenue laws, and the Irish pension list. Lord Kilwarlin, being asked to contribute to the rebuilding of his meeting-house, said he would rather pay to pull it down (broadsheet of August 1783). In 1786 Richard Woodward, Bishop of Cloyne, published his Present State of the Church of Ireland, to prove that none but Episcopalians could be loyal to the constitution. Barber's Remarks in reply showed him a master of satire, and embodied the most trenchant pleas for disestablishment that any dissenter had yet put forth ("Must seven-eighths of the nation for ever crouch to the eighth?"). Woodward made no response.

Samuel (/ˈsæm.juː.əl/;Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל, Modern Shmu'el, Tiberian Šəmûʼēl; Arabic: صموئيل Ṣamuil; Greek: Σαμουήλ Samouēl; Latin: Samvel; Strong's: Shemuwel), literally meaning "Name of God" in Hebrew, is a leader of ancient Israel in the Books of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible. He is also known as a prophet and is mentioned in the second chapter of the Qur'an, although not by name.
His status, as viewed by rabbinical literature, is that he was the last of the Hebrew Judges and the first of the major prophets who began to prophesy inside the Land of Israel. He was thus at the cusp between two eras. According to the text of the Books of Samuel, he also anointed the first two kings of the Kingdom of Israel: Saul and David.
Biblical account
Family
Samuel's mother was Hannah and his father was Elkanah. Elkanah lived at Rama-thaim in the district of Zuph. His genealogy is also found in a pedigree of the Kohathites (1 Chron. 6:3-15) and in that of Heman, his great-grandson (ib. vi. 18-22). According to the genealogical tables, Elkanah was a Levite - a fact otherwise not mentioned in the books of Samuel. The fact that Elkanah, a Levite, was denominated an Ephraimite is analogous to the designation of a Levite belonging to Judah (Judges 17:7, for example).

Samuel of Nehardea
Samuel of Nehardea or Samuel bar Abba (Hebrew: שמואל or שמואל ירחינאה) was a Jewish Talmudist who lived in Babylonia, known as an Amora of the first generation; son of Abba bar Abba and head of the Yeshiva at Nehardea. He was a teacher of halakha, judge, physician, and astronomer. He was born about 165 CE at Nehardea, in Babylonia and died there about 257 CE. As in the case of many other great men, a number of legendary stories are connected with his birth (comp. Halakot Gedolot, Giṭṭin, end; Tos. Ḳid. 73a s.v. Mai Ikka). In Talmudic texts, Samuel is frequently associated with Abba Arika, with whom he debated on many major issues. He was the teacher of Rabbi Judah ben Ezekiel. From the little biographical information gleaned from the Talmud, we know that Samuel was never ordained as a Tanna, that he was very precise with his words (Kidd. 70), and that he had a special affinity for astronomy: one of his best known sayings was that "The paths of heaven are as clear to me as the pathways of Nehardea."

Samuel Barber (Symphony No. 2)
Here we have from Samuel Barber (1910-1981) a thrilling orchestral work, one that almost didn't survive for our listening pleasure today. The composer sought to have his second symphony destroyed for reasons not completely known to us. However, a few years after Barber's death, the orchestra parts turned up in a warehouse in England. I'm glad they did. The three-movement symphony was composed while Barber was serving in the Army Air Force in 1942. He visited an air force base in Texas and spent time talking with the pilots to get a sense of their experiences in the air. His symphony, therefore, draws at least some of its inspiration from these accounts of soaring in the clouds. Saint Paul's Cathedral, London, during the Blitz. This cathedral has survived despite being targeted during the Blitz - it was struck by bombs on 10 October 1940 and 17 April 1941. On 12 September 1940 a time-delayed bomb that had struck the cathedral was successfully defused and removed by a bomb disposal detachment of Royal Engineers under the command of Temporary Lieutenant Robert Davies. Had this bomb detonated, it would have totally destroyed the cathedral, as it left a 100-foot (30 m) crater when it was later remotely detonated in a secure location. As a result of this action, Davies was awarded the George Cross, along with Sapper George Cameron Wylie.
On 29 December 1940, the cathedral had another close call when an incendiary bomb became lodged in the lead shell of the dome but fell outwards onto the Stone Gallery and was put out before it could ignite the dome timbers. One of the most iconic images of London during the war was a photograph of St Paul's taken the same day by photographer Herbert Mason (in this video), from the roof of the Daily Mail in Tudor Street showing the cathedral shrouded in smoke.

Wreathed in billowing smoke, amidst the chaos and destruction of war, the pale dome stands proud and glorious - indomitable. At the height of that air-raid, Sir Winston Churchill telephoned the Guildhall to insist that all fire-fighting resources be directed at St Paul's. The cathedral must be saved, he said, damage to the fabric would sap the morale of the country.

Samuel Barber, 1910 im US-Bundesstaat Pennsylvania geboren, komponierte mit zehn Jahren seine erste Oper, begann im Alter von vierzehn sein Studium und ließ sich in den Fächern Klavier, Komposition, Dirigieren und Gesang ausbilden. Sein außergewöhnliches Talent entdeckte der Dirigent Arturo Toscanini und ermutigte ihn, aus dem langsamen Satz seines Streichquartetts ein Orchesterstück zu machen. So landete Barber seinen ersten großen Erfolg: das berühmte "Adagio for Strings".
Sein Konzert für Violine und Orchester op. 14 entstand kurz darauf als Auftragswerk des Seifenfabrikanten Samuel Fels, der es für seinen Ziehsohn, den Geiger Iso Briselli, bestellte. 1.000 Dollar bot Fels – die Hälfte davon als Vorschuss. Barber reiste in die Schweiz und nach Paris – hier entstanden die ersten beiden Sätze. Und zunächst schien Briselli zufrieden, auch wenn er sich mehr Brillanz und Virtuosität wünschte. Das versprach Barber ihm für das Finale. Doch eben dieses befand der Geiger für "unspielbar". Fels forderte zunächst die Anzahlung zurück, Briselli erwartete eine Umarbeitung. Doch der Komponist, der von sich selbst sagte: "Ich schreibe, was ich fühle. Ich bin kein unsicherer Komponist", ließ sich nicht beirren. Um zu beweisen, dass sein Stück durchaus spielbar sei, legte er es einem Studienkollegen auf das Notenpult, der es beurteilen sollte. Das Ergebnis fiel eindeutig zugunsten von Barber aus. Fels beziehungsweise Briselli verzichteten auf das Recht der Uraufführung, Barber auf das noch ausstehende Honorar. Am 7. Februar 1941 spielte stattdessen Albert Spalding die Uraufführung. Dass es heute zu einem der beliebtesten Violinkonzerte vor allem in den USA gehört, hätte Iso Briselli damals sicherlich nicht erwartet. Der schwelgerische Gestus und die einprägsamen Melodien begeisterten große Geiger wie Isaac Stern oder Itzhak Perlman. Für Augustin Hadelich ist Barbers Musik "immer sehr gefühlvoll, sehr emotional, [...] da kann man schon eine Gänsehaut bekommen, selbst wenn man auf der Bühne steht!"

The recording was made in New York. The date is not entirely clear. Several takes were recorded on 1 May 1915. Further takes (up to take G) were recorded on 6 September 1915. This, however, is take J, and there appears to be no documentation as to the recording date.
From Wikipedia: Albert Spalding (August 15, 1888 – May 26, 1953) was an internationally recognized American violinist and composer.
Spalding was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 15, 1888. His mother, Marie Boardman, was a contralto and pianist. His father, James Walter Spalding, and uncle, Hall-of-Fame baseball pitcher Albert Goodwin 'Al' Spalding, created the A.G. Spalding sporting goods company.
Spalding studied the violin privately in Manhattan, New York City and Florence, Italy, and at the conservatories in Paris and Bologna; the latter graduated him with honors when he was fourteen. Following his debut in Paris on June 6, 1906, he appeared successfully in London and Vienna. His first American appearance as soloist came with the New York Symphony on November 8, 1908. A year later he soloed with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra when that orchestra toured the United States. In 1916, he was recognized as a national honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national fraternity for men in music. During World War I, Spalding served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (at one point as aide-de-camp to then-Congressman Fiorello La Guardia) and would eventually be awarded the Cross of the Crown of Italy.
Not long after his return to the United States, he married Mary Vanderhoef Pyle on July 19, 1919, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. French violinist Jacques Thibaud and Andre Benoist, Spalding's accompanist, provided the music for the ceremony. In 1920, Spalding appeared on the European tour of the New York Symphony. In 1922, he became the first American violinist to appear with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra; a year later he was the first American to serve on a jury at the Paris Conservatory, helping to award prizes to the graduating class of violinists. In February 1941, he premiered the violin concerto of Samuel Barber.
Upon the United States' involvement in World War II, Assistant Secretary of State Adolf Berle successfully urged Spalding to accept an assignment with the Office of Strategic Services. He was posted to London, for six weeks, and then served in North Africa until he was ordered to Naples where he was attached to the Psychological Warfare Division of SHAEF. In 1944, Spalding gave a legendary concert to thousands of terrified refugees stranded in a cave near Naples during a bombing raid.
Following a concert in New York on May 26, 1950, Spalding announced his retirement from the concert stage. Thereafter, he taught master classes at Boston University College of Music and, in the winter months, at Florida State University. His last recital, with pianist Jules Wolffers, at Boston University on 15 May 1953 was preserved on record... Ten days later he died in Manhattan, New York City, at the age of 64.

Here we have from Samuel Barber (1910-1981) a thrilling orchestral work, one that almost didn't survive for our listening pleasure today. The composer sought to have his second symphony destroyed for reasons not completely known to us. However, a few years after Barber's death, the orchestra parts turned up in a warehouse in England. I'm glad they did.
The three-movement symphony was composed while Barber was serving in the Army Air Force in 1942. He visited an air force base in Texas and spent time talking with the pilots to get a sense of their experiences in the air. His symphony, therefore, draws at least some of its inspiration from these accounts of soaring in the clouds.

About this song:
Samuel Barber rejected many arrangements, of Adagio for Strings, published by G. Schirmer, such as the organ arrangement by William Strickland. However he did transcribe the piece in 1967 for eight-part choir, as a setting of the Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God").
Adagio for Strings (the string version of this piece) can be heard on many film, TV, and video game soundtracks, including Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning film "Platoon", David Lynch's 1980 Oscar-nominated film "The Elephant Man", Michael Moore's documentary "Sicko", "Swimming Upstream", "Lorenzo's Oil", "A Very Natural Thing", "Reconstruction", and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Oscar-nominated 2001 film "Amélie". It has been heard in episodes of The Simpsons, Big Brother 2010 (UK), That Mitchell and Webb Look, The Boondocks, South Park, How I Met Your Mother, Seinfeld, ER (TV series), Red Dwarf, Big Love, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. A recorded performance by the London Symphony Orchestra was, for a time, the highest selling classical piece on iTunes. This choral version, Agnus Dei, can be heard in the soundtrack to the PC video game Homeworld (released in 1999, awarded with the Game of the Year accolade from the PC Gamer magazine). The work is extremely popular in the electronic dance music genre, notably in trance. Artists who have covered it include Armin van Buuren, William Orbit, Ferry Corsten, and Tiësto. eRa included this song in their new album Classics. Adagio is the final song on the final collaborative Peter, Paul and Mary album "Peter Paul and Mary, With Symphony Orchestra". Mary Travers had requested that Adagio be played at her memorial service. It was also played at the Royal Albert Concert Hall on the 15th September 2001 in memorial of the attacks on America that shook the world four days beforehand.
About the photograph:
Saint Paul's Cathedral, London, during the Blitz. This cathedral has survived despite being targeted during the Blitz - it was struck by bombs on 10 October 1940 and 17 April 1941. On 12 September 1940 a time-delayed bomb that had struck the cathedral was successfully defused and removed by a bomb disposal detachment of Royal Engineers under the command of Temporary Lieutenant Robert Davies. Had this bomb detonated, it would have totally destroyed the cathedral, as it left a 100-foot (30 m) crater when it was later remotely detonated in a secure location. As a result of this action, Davies was awarded the George Cross, along with Sapper George Cameron Wylie.
On 29 December 1940, the cathedral had another close call when an incendiary bomb became lodged in the lead shell of the dome but fell outwards onto the Stone Gallery and was put out before it could ignite the dome timbers. One of the most iconic images of London during the war was a photograph of St Paul's taken the same day by photographer Herbert Mason (in this video), from the roof of the Daily Mail in Tudor Street showing the cathedral shrouded in smoke.

Wreathed in billowing smoke, amidst the chaos and destruction of war, the pale dome stands proud and glorious - indomitable. At the height of that air-raid, Sir Winston Churchill telephoned the Guildhall to insist that all fire-fighting resources be directed at St Paul's. The cathedral must be saved, he said, damage to the fabric would sap the morale of the country.

○ Werkeinführung:
Samuel Barber, 1910 im US-Bundesstaat Pennsylvania geboren, komponierte mit zehn Jahren seine erste Oper, begann im Alter von vierzehn sein Studium und ließ sich in den Fächern Klavier, Komposition, Dirigieren und Gesang ausbilden. Sein außergewöhnliches Talent entdeckte der Dirigent Arturo Toscanini und ermutigte ihn, aus dem langsamen Satz seines Streichquartetts ein Orchesterstück zu machen. So landete Barber seinen ersten großen Erfolg: das berühmte "Adagio for Strings".
Sein Konzert für Violine und Orchester op. 14 entstand kurz darauf als Auftragswerk des Seifenfabrikanten Samuel Fels, der es für seinen Ziehsohn, den Geiger Iso Briselli, bestellte. 1.000 Dollar bot Fels – die Hälfte davon als Vorschuss. Barber reiste in die Schweiz und nach Paris – hier entstanden die ersten beiden Sätze. Und zunächst schien Briselli zufrieden, auch wenn er sich mehr Brillanz und Virtuosität wünschte. Das versprach Barber ihm für das Finale. Doch eben dieses befand der Geiger für "unspielbar". Fels forderte zunächst die Anzahlung zurück, Briselli erwartete eine Umarbeitung. Doch der Komponist, der von sich selbst sagte: "Ich schreibe, was ich fühle. Ich bin kein unsicherer Komponist", ließ sich nicht beirren. Um zu beweisen, dass sein Stück durchaus spielbar sei, legte er es einem Studienkollegen auf das Notenpult, der es beurteilen sollte. Das Ergebnis fiel eindeutig zugunsten von Barber aus. Fels beziehungsweise Briselli verzichteten auf das Recht der Uraufführung, Barber auf das noch ausstehende Honorar. Am 7. Februar 1941 spielte stattdessen Albert Spalding die Uraufführung. Dass es heute zu einem der beliebtesten Violinkonzerte vor allem in den USA gehört, hätte Iso Briselli damals sicherlich nicht erwartet. Der schwelgerische Gestus und die einprägsamen Melodien begeisterten große Geiger wie Isaac Stern oder Itzhak Perlman. Für Augustin Hadelich ist Barbers Musik "immer sehr gefühlvoll, sehr emotional, [...] da kann man schon eine Gänsehaut bekommen, selbst wenn man auf der Bühne steht!"

The recording was made in New York. The date is not entirely clear. Several takes were recorded on 1 May 1915. Further takes (up to take G) were recorded on 6 September 1915. This, however, is take J, and there appears to be no documentation as to the recording date.
From Wikipedia: Albert Spalding (August 15, 1888 – May 26, 1953) was an internationally recognized American violinist and composer.
Spalding was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 15, 1888. His mother, Marie Boardman, was a contralto and pianist. His father, James Walter Spalding, and uncle, Hall-of-Fame baseball pitcher Albert Goodwin 'Al' Spalding, created the A.G. Spalding sporting goods company.
Spalding studied the violin privately in Manhattan, New York City and Florence, Italy, and at the conservatories in Paris and Bologna; the latter graduated him with honors when he was fourteen. Following his debut in Paris on June 6, 1906, he appeared successfully in London and Vienna. His first American appearance as soloist came with the New York Symphony on November 8, 1908. A year later he soloed with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra when that orchestra toured the United States. In 1916, he was recognized as a national honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national fraternity for men in music. During World War I, Spalding served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (at one point as aide-de-camp to then-Congressman Fiorello La Guardia) and would eventually be awarded the Cross of the Crown of Italy.
Not long after his return to the United States, he married Mary Vanderhoef Pyle on July 19, 1919, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. French violinist Jacques Thibaud and Andre Benoist, Spalding's accompanist, provided the music for the ceremony. In 1920, Spalding appeared on the European tour of the New York Symphony. In 1922, he became the first American violinist to appear with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra; a year later he was the first American to serve on a jury at the Paris Conservatory, helping to award prizes to the graduating class of violinists. In February 1941, he premiered the violin concerto of Samuel Barber.
Upon the United States' involvement in World War II, Assistant Secretary of State Adolf Berle successfully urged Spalding to accept an assignment with the Office of Strategic Services. He was posted to London, for six weeks, and then served in North Africa until he was ordered to Naples where he was attached to the Psychological Warfare Division of SHAEF. In 1944, Spalding gave a legendary concert to thousands of terrified refugees stranded in a cave near Naples during a bombing raid.
Following a concert in New York on May 26, 1950, Spalding announced his retirement from the concert stage. Thereafter, he taught master classes at Boston University College of Music and, in the winter months, at Florida State University. His last recital, with pianist Jules Wolffers, at Boston University on 15 May 1953 was preserved on record... Ten days later he died in Manhattan, New York City, at the age of 64.

Here we have from Samuel Barber (1910-1981) a thrilling orchestral work, one that almost didn't survive for our listening pleasure today. The composer sought to have his second symphony destroyed for reasons not completely known to us. However, a few years after Barber's death, the orchestra parts turned up in a warehouse in England. I'm glad they did.
The three-movement symphony was composed while Barber was serving in the Army Air Force in 1942. He visited an air force base in Texas and spent time talking with the pilots to get a sense of their experiences in the air. His symphony, therefore, draws at least some of its inspiration from these accounts of soaring in the clouds.

Samuel Barber
Samuel Osborne Barber II (March 9, 1910 – January 23, 1981) was an American composer of orchestral, opera, choral, and piano music. He is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century: music critic Donal Henahan stated that "Probably no other American composer has ever enjoyed such early, such persistent and such long-lasting acclaim."
His Adagio for Strings (1936) has earned a permanent place in the concert repertory of orchestras. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music twice: for his opera Vanessa (1956–57) and for the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1962). Also widely performed is his Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (1947), a setting for soprano and orchestra of a prose text by James Agee. At the time of his death, nearly all of his compositions had been recorded.
Biography
Early years
Barber was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of Marguerite McLeod (née Beatty) and Samuel Le Roy Barber. He was born into a comfortable, educated, social, and distinguished American family. His father was a physician; his mother, called Daisy, was a pianist of English-Scottish-Irish descent whose family had lived in the United States since the time of the Revolutionary War. His aunt, Louise Homer, was a leading contralto at the Metropolitan Opera; his uncle, Sidney Homer, was a composer of American art songs. Louise Homer is known to have influenced Barber's interest in voice. Through his aunt, Barber had access to many great singers and songs.
