Gian Carlo Menotti - Concerto for 3 Instrumental Groups (1/3)
Gian Carlo Menotti (July 7, 1911 - February 1, 2007) was an Italian-American composer and librettist. Although he often referred to himself as an American composer, he kept his Italian citizenship. Triple Concerto a Tre (1970) 1. Allegro Group 1: violin, viola and cello Group 2: piano, harp and percussion Group 3 : oboe, clarinet and bassoon London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Amos Menotti wrote the libretti for two of Samuel Barber's operas, Vanessa and A Hand of Bridge, as well as revising the libretto for Antony and Cleopatra. Amelia al Ballo is the only one of Menotti's operas still to be published in its original or perhaps "complementary" Italian libretto (alongside the English) (see Ricordi editions 1937, 1976 and recent): it is an adept example of Italianate style (with a nod to but not an imitation of Puccini and Mascagni) and it is unjustly neglected. It was, however, at the time so successful that NBC commissioned an opera specifically for radio, The Old Maid and the Thief, one of the first such works. Following this, he wrote a ballet, Sebastian (1944), and a piano concerto (1945) before returning to opera with The Medium and The Telephone, or L'Amour à trois. His first full-length opera, The Consul, which premiered in 1950, won both the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Musical Play of the Year (the latter in 1954). He intended to give a role to a then-unknown Maria Callas, but the producer would not have it ...

Gian Carlo Menotti - A Composer's Life in Two Worlds
Gian Carlo Menotti - A Composer's Life in Two Worlds. Menotti was America's favorite operatic composer. The creator of the popular "Amahl and the Night Visitors" which is widely performed at Christmastime all across the world, Menotti was the winner of two Pulitzer prizes. Today he is virtually forgotten. Documentary director Jay Fedigan interviewed Menotti in Spoleto, Italy during the Spoleto Festival. Menotti shares stories about the beginnings of the Festival and about "Amahl and the Night Visitors". His birthday celebration makes a great finale for the video. Menotti recently passed away so I hope you enjoy this look into his life.

Gian Carlo Menotti - Sebastian (1944) ballet suite [1/2]
Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) Sebastian Suite (1944), ballet I. Introduction 0:00 II. Barcarole 2:09 III. Street Fight 6:02 IV. Cortege 7:26 V. Sebastian's Dance VI. Dance of the Wounded Courtesan VII. Pavane Spoleto Festival Orchestra/Richard Hickox Menotti composed this ballet score to his own libretto in 1944. The choreography of the original production was considered unsuccessful, but with restagings later it became a success. Sebastian is a Moorish slave, secretly in love with a courtesan. She, in her turn, shares love with the Prince of their Italian kingdom. The prince's sisters, desiring to end the affair, steal the courtesan's veil, which allows them to work black magic on her, which they can do with a life-sized wax figure covered with the veil; firing arrows into it will kill her. Sebastian learns of the plot, substitutes himself for the wax figure, and is shot with the arrows. The sacrifice breaks their spell over the courtesan, and she is reunited with her beloved. Menotti's music is ardent and romantic, sort of an Italian Prokofiev in style and sound. It is very listenable, a fine score of its type. When the work was first heard in New York, critic, Mark Schubart, reporting for The New York Times stated that the music "is prettily orchestrated, and the more violent portions are filled with elaborate percussion effects, flutter-tonguing on the brasses and carefully balanced, effective sonorities." He noted also the "attractive melodies, simple in intent and ...

Gian Carlo Menotti - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra - I. Allegro moderato (1/2)
Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) Concerto for Violin and Orchestra I. Allegro moderato II. Adagio III. Allegro vivace Ruggiero Ricci, violin Pacific Symphony Orchestra Keith Clark, conductor Gian Carlo Menotti's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra was commissioned in 1952 by Efrem Zimbalist, violinist and then director of the Curtis Institute of Music, of which Menotti was a former student. The work was premiered by Zimbalist and the Philadelphia Orchestra in December of that year. Divided into three movements, the concerto is a conventional showpiece for the virtuoso soloist, with a lyricism and tonality characteristic of much of Menotti's work. The final movement features a section for oboe, tambourine, and Indian drum reminiscent of the Middle Eastern influences found in Menotti's opera Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951).~ Art of the States "I am convinced that composition is more an act of discovery than of creation" (GC Menotti)
