The Youngbloods were an early folk-rock group originally based in New York City and later in Marin County, California, who recorded one of the earliest cover versions of Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe" The track appeared on their second LP, Earth Music, released in November 1967 by RCA. The song is only available on CD only on the collection of three of the Youngbloods late-'60s RCA albums -- Youngbloods, Earth Music, and Elephant Mountain released by the U.K. label Beat Goes On. The Youngbloods
The Youngbloods were an American rock band consisting of Jesse Colin Young (vocals, bass), Jerry Corbitt (guitar), Lowell Levinger, nicknamed "Banana" (guitar and electric piano), and Joe Bauer (drums). Despite receiving critical acclaim, they never achieved widespread popularity. Their only U.S. Top 40 entry was "Get Together".
Band history
Background and formation
Jesse Colin Young (born Perry Miller, November 22, 1941, Queens, New York City) was a moderately successful folk singer with two LPs under his belt – Soul of a City Boy (1964) and Youngblood (1965) – when he met fellow folk singer and former bluegrass musician from Cambridge, Jerry Corbitt (born Jerry Byron Corbitt, January 7, 1943, Tifton, Georgia). When in town, Young would drop in on Corbitt, and the two played together exchanging harmonies.
Beginning in January 1965, the two began performing on the Canadian circuit as a duo, eventually adopting the name "The Youngbloods". Young played bass, and Corbitt played piano, harmonica and lead guitar. Corbitt introduced Young to a bluegrass musician, Lowell Levinger (born Lowell Levinger III, 1946, Cambridge, Massachusetts). Levinger, known as "Banana", could play the piano, banjo, mandolin, mandola, guitar and bass; he had played in the Proper Bostoners and the Trolls, and played mainly piano and guitar in the Youngbloods. He knew of a fellow tenant who could flesh out the band, Joe Bauer (born September 26, 1941, Memphis, Tennessee), an aspiring jazz drummer with experience playing in society dance bands.

Elephant Mountain
Elephant Mountain is an album by the American rock band The Youngbloods, released in 1969. It reached number 118 on the Billboard 200 chart.
History
With the departure of member and co-founder Jerry Corbitt, Jesse Colin Young became the primary songwriter of the band, penning seven of the 13 tracks on the album, and co-writing four more with Lowell "Banana" Levinger and Joe Bauer. Young's songwriting ranges from jazzy acoustic ballads ("Sunlight" and "Ride the Wind"), to country/folk pop ("Smug" and "Beautiful") and bluesy hard rock ("Sham"). "Darkness, Darkness" and "Quicksand" are songs dealing with depression and suicide, quite at odds with the optimistic to happy-go-lucky image of the band created by songs like "Get Together" and "Grizzly Bear" (though not unlike other early songs such as "All My Dreams Blue" and "Foolin' Around"). The four tracks credited to Young, Banana, and Bauer are all instrumentals.
Levinger's "On Sir Francis Drake" is another instrumental named after Sir Francis Drake Boulevard of Marin County to where the band had recently moved. At 6:44 it is the longest track on the album, consisting of two sections, the first an electric piano-based waltz, the second a blues jam with some bass soloing by Young. The remaining song on the album is "Rain Song (Don't Let the Rain Bring You Down)", which is similar to their earlier "jug band" style songs like "Euphoria" and "The Wine Song"; it was co-written by Jerry Corbitt, Felix Pappalardi and Gail Collins, his wife.

Robert Plant released a version of the song as a single in 2002 that reached #27 on the rock chart. It was featured on his 2002 album Dreamland.
During the Vietnam War it was considered an "anthem" to the soldiers for it described what they felt while in the jungles.

The Youngbloods were an early folk-rock group originally based in New York City and later in Marin County, California, who recorded one of the earliest cover versions of Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe" The track appeared on their second LP, Earth Music, released in November 1967 by RCA. The song is only available on CD only on the collection of three of the Youngbloods late-'60s RCA albums -- Youngbloods, Earth Music, and Elephant Mountain released by the U.K. label Beat Goes On. Both groups offered good-timey folk-rock with much stronger jug band influences than West Coast rivals like the Byrds, though the Youngbloods made greater use of electric keyboards than the Spoonful, courtesy of the enigmatically named Lowell "Banana" Levinger. The Youngbloods didn't craft nearly as many brilliant singles as the Lovin' Spoonful, but (unlike the Spoonful) endured well into the hippie/psychedelic era.
While Young was always the focal point of the band, their first two albums also had songwriting contributions from guitarist Jerry Corbitt. Produced by Felix Pappalardi (who also worked with Cream), these records (The Youngbloods and Earth Music) were engaging and mature, if inconsistent, folk-rock. Corbitt's "Grizzly Bear" was a small hit, as was "Get Together," a Dino Valenti song that had previously been recorded by Jefferson Airplane. The Youngbloods' slow, soulful interpretation of "Get Together" was definitive, but it wouldn't reach the Top Ten until it was re-released in 1969, after the song had been used in a television public service ad.

Working the early ‘60s folk circuit, Jessie Colin Young would play sets with Jerry Corbitt whenever he was in Corbitt’s homebase of Cambridge, MA. Liking how their voices sounded together, they began touring as a duo, taking the name “The Youngbloods” from a title of Young’s second solo LP, Youngblood. Corbitt introduced Young to multi-instrumentalist Lowell “Banana” Levinger who joined the duo. After establishing a successful residency at Café Au Go Go in NYC, the band was signed to RCA and recorded their self-titled debut LP, released in 1967. The album contained a mid-charting single, “Grizzly Bear,” as well as what would become their signature song, “Get Together.” Written by Dino Valente under the pen name Chet Powers, the song made it up to #62 before stalling on the charts. The album also contained well-chosen blues covers as well as original songs written by Young.
Two years after its release, “Get Together” was used in a public service campaign, sparking renewed interest. This interest translated into airplay and this time, the song climbed all the way to #2. During this period, Corbitt left the band to pursue a solo career and the remaining members carried on as a trio. Relocating to Marin County, California, the band cultivated a loyal following through their dynamic live shows, featuring inspired instrumental

Working the early ‘60s folk circuit, Jessie Colin Young would play sets with Jerry Corbitt whenever he was in Corbitt’s homebase of Cambridge, MA. Liking how their voices sounded together, they began touring as a duo, taking the name “The Youngbloods” from a title of Young’s second solo LP, Youngblood. Corbitt introduced Young to multi-instrumentalist Lowell “Banana” Levinger who joined the duo. He also does a sweet medley of Marvin Gaye's "Whats Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me."

Working the early ‘60s folk circuit, Jessie Colin Young would play sets with Jerry Corbitt whenever he was in Corbitt’s homebase of Cambridge, MA. Liking how their voices sounded together, they began touring as a duo, taking the name “The Youngbloods” from a title of Young’s second solo LP, Youngblood. Corbitt introduced Young to multi-instrumentalist Lowell “Banana” Levinger who joined the duo. Levinger, in turn, recruited drummer Joe Bauer for the band and the Youngbloods full line-up was complete. Their combination of folk, rock and jug band elements drew comparisons to the Lovin’ Spoonful and indeed, the two bands played many of the same venues.
After establishing a successful residency at Café Au Go Go in NYC, the band was signed to RCA and recorded their self-titled debut LP, released in 1967. The album contained a mid-charting single, “Grizzly Bear,” as well as what would become their signature song, “Get Together.” Written by Dino Valente under the pen name Chet Powers, the song made it up to #62 before stalling on the charts. The album also contained well-chosen blues covers as well as original songs written by Young.
Two years after its release, “Get Together” was used in a public service campaign, sparking renewed interest. This interest translated into airplay and this time, the song climbed all the way to #2. During this period, Corbitt left the band to pursue a solo career and the remaining members carried on as a trio. Relocating to Marin County, California, the band cultivated a loyal following through their dynamic live shows, featuring inspired instrumental
interplay. They carried on until 1972, leaving a rich catalog in their wake.

The Youngbloods could not be considered a major '60s band, but they were capable of offering some mighty pleasurable folk-rock in the late '60s, and produced a few great tunes along the way. One of the better groups to emerge from the East Coast in the mid-'60s, they would temper their blues and jug band influences with gentle California psychedelia, particularly after they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. For most listeners, they're identified almost exclusively with their Top Ten hit "Get Together," but they managed several respectable albums as well, all under the leadership of singer/songwriter Jesse Colin Young.
Young got his start on the folk circuits of Boston and New York, and had already cut a couple of solo albums before forming the Youngbloods. John Sebastian was one of the supporting musicians on Young's second LP, and comparisons between the two — and between the Youngbloods and the Lovin' Spoonful — are inevitable. Both groups offered good-timey folk-rock with much stronger jug band influences than West Coast rivals like the Byrds, though the Youngbloods made greater use of electric keyboards than the Spoonful, courtesy of the enigmatically named Lowell "Banana" Levinger. The Youngbloods didn't craft nearly as many brilliant singles as the Lovin' Spoonful, but (unlike the Spoonful) endured well into the hippie/psychedelic era.
While Young was always the focal point of the band, their first two albums also had songwriting contributions from guitarist Jerry Corbitt. Produced by Felix Pappalardi (who also worked with Cream), these records (The Youngbloods and Earth Music) were engaging and mature, if inconsistent, folk-rock. Corbitt's "Grizzly Bear" was a small hit, as was "Get Together," a Dino Valenti song that had previously been recorded by Jefferson Airplane. The Youngbloods' slow, soulful interpretation of "Get Together" was definitive, but it wouldn't reach the Top Ten until it was re-released in 1969, after the song had been used in a television public service ad.

Their folk rock sides were always more convincing than their attempts at psychedelia, and they never really recovered from the loss of guitarist Jerry Corbitt before the release of their third album, Elephant Mountain. That's not to say that bassist and erstwhile folk singer-guitarist guitarist Jesse Colin Young was without talent, but as his sweet voice and correspondingly similar songs came to dominate the Youngbloods' sound, the band became a little too soft for its own good.

Despite the fact that Two Trips was an exploitation job of old material released by Mercury to cash in on the belated success of "Get Together," it's actually a favorite album by Young and the Youngbloods since it neatly encapsulates that transitional time when folk music was morphing into folk rock. Indeed, the tracks on this LP were apparently recorded during the pivotal year of 1965, when the 1960s as we understand the decade today seems to have really begun. Trip 1 features demos by an embryonic version of the group that does not always include the contributions of pianist Lowell "Banana" Levinger, while Trip 2 includes approximately half of the songs from Young's Youngblood album, which came out earlier that same year. The Youngbloods tracks are cut from a similar cloth as the material from their first two albums, pleasant if unspectacular East Coast folk rock. The beginning of "Hey Babe" sounds like it wants to become "Get Together," but never quite does. The mellow "Sometimes" contains some nice harmony vocals, and "Rider" is a raved-up version of an acoustic song by Young that had previously appeared on Youngblood. The country rocker "Another Strange Town" has a welcome grittiness to it, but "No More Pain" is arguably the most compelling and distinctive performance in this group of songs.
A favorite number on this album is a first-rate cover of Mississippi John Hurt's "Nobody's Dirty Business," which is itself an interpretation of Bessie Smith's "'Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do." If it bears similarity to the Lovin' Spoonful, it's because that's John Sebastian you hear blowing the harmonica. Man, I love this song. "Summer Rain" is sickly sweet and a bit overly earnest for my tastes, not to mention that the piano sounds almost out of tune. "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" reveals itself to be a better than expected performance of an old Tin Pan Alley composition. The next two tracks are thoroughly excellent: Young's convincing "Walkin' Off the Blues" as well as a version of "Doc Geiger," which is graced by Peter Childs' lovely dobro playing. In spite of its title, "Lullabye" manages to avoid the pitfalls of being too mushy, which was unfortunately the bane of Jesse Colin Young's post-Youngbloods solo career.

Trip 1 features demos by an embryonic version of the group that does not always include the contributions of pianist Lowell "Banana" Levinger, while Trip 2 includes approximately half of the songs from Young's Youngblood album, which came out earlier that same year. The Youngbloods tracks are cut from a similar cloth as the material from their first two albums, pleasant if unspectacular East Coast folk rock. The beginning of "Hey Babe" sounds like it wants to become "Get Together," but never quite does. The mellow "Sometimes" contains some nice harmony vocals, and "Rider" is a raved-up version of an acoustic song by Young that had previously appeared on Youngblood. The country rocker "Another Strange Town" has a welcome grittiness to it, but "No More Pain" is arguably the most compelling and distinctive performance in this group of songs.
A favorite number on this album is a first-rate cover of Mississippi John Hurt's "Nobody's Dirty Business," which is itself an interpretation of Bessie Smith's "'Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do." If it bears similarity to the Lovin' Spoonful, it's because that's John Sebastian you hear blowing the harmonica. Man, I love this song. "Summer Rain" is sickly sweet and a bit overly earnest for my tastes, not to mention that the piano sounds almost out of tune. "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" reveals itself to be a better than expected performance of an old Tin Pan Alley composition. The next two tracks are thoroughly excellent: Young's convincing "Walkin' Off the Blues" as well as a version of "Doc Geiger," which is graced by Peter Childs' lovely dobro playing. In spite of its title, "Lullabye" manages to avoid the pitfalls of being too mushy, which was unfortunately the bane of Jesse Colin Young's post-Youngbloods solo career.
