Challenges Facing Development NGOs - Part 1 of 2
Interview with Norman Cook, Canadian development expert (and jazz lover). How have the roles of NGOs changed? Are they becoming near-governmental - "embedded" with power politics? How our development models and criteria often don't fit the reality in developing countries.

NGOs, an extension of US foreign policy
The world is facing a decline in political rights and civil liberties, according to the organization Freedom House. Many US NGOs, like Freedom House, go into other countries to provide humanitarian aid but it seems their hidden agenda is to make these countries more like the US. Mark Weisbrot says many NGOs were set up to act as an extension of US foreign policy and set up in places like Venezuela and Haiti.

How NGO's Can Get Involved in the Rio+20 Summit Process - Jan-Gustav Strandenaes
Featuring UNCSD NGO Major Groups Facilitator Jan-Gustav Strandenaes of The Northern Alliance for Sustainable Developement (ANPED). Strandenaes outlines how NGOs can get involved in the preparatory process of the Rio + 20 Earth Summit that will take place from June 4 - 6, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and calls on organizations around the world to seize this historic opportunity to challenge the international community to adopt an ambitious roadmap towards sustainable development and greening of the global economy.
Founded in 1991, ANPED consists of 135 NGO members and has a focus on sustainable consumption and works on a number of issues related to NGOs and international processes. The term "Major Groups" was introduced in Agenda 21 and agreed upon by governments at the first Rio Earth Summit in 1992. It includes nine sectors of society that play a significant role in sustainable development including: women, children and youth, indigenous people, NGOs, local authorities, workers and trade unions, business and industry, the scientific and technical community, and farmers.

Washington DC is home to the White House, Congress and more than 57,000 non-profit organizations. Call them think tanks, NGOs, policy forums or nonprofits, many provide vital services worldwide, while others are created for not-so-charitable purposes.

Julian Parr is the Regional Manager, South East Asia for Oxfam GB. He was interviewed in Delhi on 12th of April 2010 by Fausto Aarya De Santis

"Do you think we need NGOs to support development activities around the world?
A robust civil society is hugely important in terms of democratization and hearing the voice of people. For civil society has a more inclusive definition which is not just NGOs but also Media. The freedom of press in India it's is major strength... and if you suppress the freedom of Media you suppress development.
What are their Challenges?
NGOs are having the define their role in a new world order, especially international NGOs. What is are role now? We cannot continue to deliver services, for in doing so they undermine the role of the Government in doing that. My own sense it that we are now moving more towards advocacy and policies and that it the role we should be playing... we should be arguing to governments like India that you should put more than just 1% of the GDP into health.
What are their limitations?
Is whether they have an authentic voice. NGOs are very good in claiming to speak on behalf of people but they are not democratic institutions in their own right.
I can say that, yes, we have some very robust programs on the ground, but that is because i am saying it... if I had the same response from Coca-Cola, BP, Shell or even the goverment, I will be very skeptical of those figures and statistics. If we are going to hold other stakeholders and other sectors into account then we ourselves have to be much more transparent and honest about our own structure."

Humanitarian NGOs and the International Criminal Court
This six-minute micro-documentary explores the tensions between humanitarian NGOs, like CARE and Save the Children, and advocates for international justice. The president of Save the Children, Charles MacCormack, describes his organizations explusion from Sudan by President Bashir after the International Criminal Court charged Bashir with crimes against humanity in March 2009. ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo argues that President Bashir expelled these groups, not because of any real cooperation between the NGOs and his office, but to pressure the international community. Ken Roth, president of Human Rights Watch, calls for a parallel partnership between humanitarian NGOs and the ICC, to prevent collaboration from compromising any group. Leading figures in both the justice and humanitarian movements debate whether dialogue is possible across these lines, raising both practical and ethical questions.
The Consultative Conference on International Criminal Justice was held at the United Nations in New York.
Conference discussion papers used to frame each session are available for download at http://internationalcriminaljustice.net/.
Video, audio, session summaries, interviews, articles and a comprehensive conference report will be published on that website and made available to the general public.
The Consultative Conference was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation and convened by the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University.

Haiti gains reputation as 'a republic of NGOs'
Even before the earthquake, Haiti's government was not fully functioning and Haitians relied on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for many services, including healthcare, education and humanitarian aid.
But many in the NGO community and outside of it say they are critical of the unchecked power this community can wield despite the good work.
A report from Oxfam, one of the major NGOs working in Haiti admitted that international groups often exclude the state in their plans and should do more to work with the government.
Paul Farmer, the UN deputy special envoy to Haiti, said until the government has the resources it needs, Haiti will remain "the republic of NGOs".

Taking the Next Step 2013: NGOs, Policy, and International Relations: Ingredients for Change
You want to make a difference in the world, either at home or abroad, but how can you translate your passion into a successful and rewarding career? A panel of alumni with careers related to policy and international affairs, both abroad and in the United States, helped answer this question. The panelists, with backgrounds in international government organizations, foreign policy, NGOs, think tanks, and government agencies, shared how they started their careers and offered advice to students who are beginning to think about engaging the world in their career.

NGOs lobbying for war?
Non-government organizations have been blamed for Western intervention in Libya. According to information published by NGO's, ex-Libyan leader Mommar Gaddaffi hired mercenaries to supposedly killed innocent people. This information justified a NATO lead bombing in the country resulting in the death of the long time leader Gaddafi. According to a report by the Center for the Study of Interventionism, NGO's made the situation appear worse than it actually was. Russ Baker, founder and editor-in-chief for WhoWhatWhy.Com, joins us with his take on NGO's.

Getting NGOs to Celebrate Failure, So They Can Learn From Others' Mistakes
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Development Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish
Week after week, we bring you stories about projects to improve lives in the developing world. Projects like banking by mobile phone or low-cost lighting systems or even a toilet bag that recycles itself into fertilizer. But for every success story, there are countless other projects that fail. These are the stories that people talk about at an event called FAILFaire. The creators of the event recently held their second FAILFaire. Members of the nonprofit community came together in Washington to talk about their projects, and why they failed. FAILFaire is sort of like a celebration of failure. A prize is even given to the "best" worst story. But why celebrate? Katrin Verclas is with a nonprofit group in New York called MobileActive. She was the one with the idea for FAILFaire. She says the event provides an opportunity for people to learn from the mistakes of others. She says: "Development is a field with finite resources, and so the less money we waste, the better. And part of that is learning from the things that didn't work, so that we don't endlessly repeat them." MobileActive held its first FAILFaire in New York earlier this year. More than seventy people attended the event. One of them, for example, was there to talk about his failed nonprofit organization MobileImpact.org. Bradford Frost had hoped to recycle used cell phones and provide them to people in Africa. Katrin Verclas explained some of the problems with this project, and others like it.She says it did not work at all because of the numbers of very inexpensive handsets in the countries. She says they call that SWEDOW -- Stuff We Don't Want. FAILFaire takes place in a lighthearted social setting, over food and drinks. Ms. Verclas says the creator of a project is the one responsible for declaring it a failure. She says profit-making businesses talk more about failure than nonprofit organizations do.She says: "We have to report to donors and donors do not like to look bad, and so we don't like to look bad as nonprofits. And so we have a tendency to highlight our successes and never talk about our failures." Katrin Verclas says she hopes FAILFaire will change this problem over time. She says members of the nonprofit community have been surprisingly open to her idea. For VOA Special English I'm Alex Villarreal. Transcripts and MP3s of our reports are at voaspecialenglish.com.

Front Line NGOs in China: Challenges and Success Stories - Holly Chang
More China-focused interviews at http://ichinaforum.com
Golden Bridges is dedicated to building sustainable capacity of China's NGO sector. The society's needs are not always fully addressed by the government nor the private sector so the "civil society" requires people and community based efforts to focus on a broad range of human needs. Holly talks about challenges faced by front line NGOs in China, including competition from the government and an unclear and undeveloped legal system. Unlike other countries, China has a number of "Government-Organized Non-Government Organizations (GONGOs)", which directly or indirectly receive a disproportionate amount of available funding. For example, about 80% of all charitable donations made in the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake were funneled to the Chinese Red Cross and other GONGOs. She shares success stories of international NGOs operating in China today.

Open Forum: NGOs as New Models for the 21st Century
In the past century, businesses have become increasingly proactive corporate citizens, taking on social and environmental causes that were traditionally the domain of international organizations and NGOs. Meanwhile, non-profit institutions have found their management and performance under scrutiny. As we advance to an era where efficiency and accountability take precedence, how can humanitarian funds be applied most effectively?
- To whom should NGOs be accountable? What are their roles and responsibilities?
- Should NGOs be run like businesses?
- What are the opportunities for businesses and NGOs to collaborate? What are the drivers to create partnerships?
