"Ol' '55" is a song by American musician Tom Waits. It is the opening track and lead single from Waits' debut studio album, Closing Time, released in March 1973 on Asylum Records. Written by Waits and produced by Jerry Yester, "Ol' '55" was a minor hit. The song has been covered by numerous artists, most notably by the Eagles on their On the Border (1974).
Waits has been critical of the Eagles' cover version of the song, admitting that he was "not that particularly crazy about (their) rendition of it ... I thought their version was a little antiseptic."
Ol 55 may refer to:
Ol' 55 was an Australian band specialising in retro, 1950s-era Rock 'n' Roll. They formed as Fanis in 1972 in Sutherland, Sydney. Drummer Geoff Plummer was working with Glenn A. Baker at the NSW Department of Media and invited Baker to hear his part-time band, including Patrick"Meatballs" DRUMMOND, Rockpile Jones and Jimmy Manzie. In 1975, Baker took on their management, renamed them as Ol' 55 for the Tom Waits song (as covered by The Eagles), and recruited front man Frankie J. Holden and, later in the year, saxophonist Wilbur Wilde.
The band enjoyed popularity with a style that bordered on parody but managed to combine novelty retro kitsch and clever theatrics with a keen sense of pop dynamics and an acute understanding of rock 'n' roll. Their top 20 hits on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart were, "On the Prowl" (No. 14, May 1976), "Looking for an Echo" (No. 9, August), "(I Want A) Rockin' Christmas" (No. 7, November), "Stay (While the Night is Still Young)" (No. 16, November 1977), and "Two Faces Have I" (No. 15, July 1980). Their debut album, Take It Greasy peaked at No. 2 in the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart in 1976. After line-up changes, Ol' 55 disbanded in 1983 for a few years; while both Holden and Wilde had already furthered their musical careers and also taken roles in television entertainment. Various revivals titled Ol' 55, The Fives, Frankie J. Holden & The Fives, or Ol' Skydaddys contained members of the 1976 line-up of the band. Manzie moved to Hollywood, where he wrote film music—mainly for horror movies—and produced recordings for bands.
First track from "Closing time (1973)" (at least I think so) For entertaining purposes only! Well my time went so quickly, I went lickety-splickly out to my old '55 As I drove away slowly, feeling so holy, God knows, I was feeling alive. Now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck, freeway cars and trucks, Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer, Oh, Lord, let me tell you that the feeling's getting stronger. And it's six in the morning, gave me no warning; I had to be on my way. Well there's trucks all a-passing me, and the lights are all flashing, I'm on my way home from your place. And now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck, freeway cars and trucks, Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade Just...

Looking For An Echo lyrics
At daydream junior highschool
We used to harmonise
Me and Frankie and Jimmy
And some Italian guy
We were singing oldies
But they were newies then
And today when I play my old 45's
I remember when
We practiced in a subway,
In a lobby or a hall
Crowded in a doorway
Singing "do wops" to the wall
And if we went to a party
And they wouldn't let us sing
We'd lock ourselves in the bathroom
And nobody could get in
'Cause we were looking for an echo
An answer to our sound
A place to be in harmony
A place we almost found
Ooooh
And the girls would gather 'round us
And our heads would really swell
We'd sing songs by the moonglows,
The Harptones and the Dells
And when we sang sincerely,
We really sang it high
And even though it was falsetto
We almost reached the sky
We've sung a lot of changes
Since 1955
And a lot of bad arrangements
We tried to harmonise
Now they've turned into oldies
But they were newies then
And today when I play my old 45's
I remember when
We were looking for an echo
An answer to our sound
A place to be in harmony
A place we almost found
Oooh
We were looking for an echo
An answer to our sound
A place to be in harmony
A place we almost found
Oooh....found...
Oooh..found
Oooh..found
