New Exhibit of Interior of Salt Lake Temple
A scaled model of the Salt Lake City Temple opened Friday, May 28, 1010, offering an open house-type experience of arguably the most recognizable building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The 88-inch tall, near-identical replica of the temple is located in the South Visitor's Center on Temple Square and is open to the public. It sits in front of a giant window facing the actual building it replicates. "This replica will show the millions of visitors who come to Temple Square the beauty and majesty of this sacred and historic building," said Elder Richard G. Hinckley, executive director of the Missionary Department. "Like all temples, once the building is dedicated it is used for sacred Church purposes and not open to the general public, but this exhibit will provide the public with a glimpse of the interior and a feeling of the Spirit that is present there." While public open houses for new temples regularly draw tens and even hundreds of thousands of people, the LDS Church anticipates millions will likely see this 1:32 scaled model of the Salt Lake Temple over its lifetime. "This temple has been closed to the public for 117 years and so with that increase in curiosity and the desire we have to dispel some of the misperceptions that are apparent among people," said Hinckley. "We got permission to build this and we think it will go a long way in doing just that. The south and east walls of the replica have been cut away to show depictions of many of the ...

The Salt Lake City Utah Temple (HD) - Mormon Temples
The Salt Lake Temple is the largest (of more than 130 around the world) and best-known temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the sixth temple built by the church overall, and the fourth operating temple built since the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois. The Salt Lake Temple is the centerpiece of the 10 acre (40000 m²) Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although there are no public tours inside the temple (because it is considered sacred by the church and its members, a temple recommend is required), the temple grounds are open to the public and are a popular tourist attraction. Due to its location at LDS Church headquarters and its historical significance, it is patronized much by Latter-day Saints from many parts of the world. The Salt Lake Temple is also the location of the weekly meetings of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. As such, there are special meeting rooms in the Salt Lake Temple for these purposes, including the Holy of Holies, which are not present in other temples. The official name of the Salt Lake Temple is also unique. In the early 2000s, as the building of LDS temples accelerated dramatically, the Church announced a formal naming convention for all existing and future temples. For temples located in the United States and Canada, the name of the temple is generally the city or town in which the temple is located, followed by the name of the applicable state or province (with no comma). History of the Mormons in Utah & the Salt Lake Temple 1/8
www.youtube.com is a video describing how to learn more about the Mormon Church. In this film, "Mountain of the Lord," a newspaper reporter from New York City visits with Wilford Woodruff, fourth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints after the death of John Taylor, to recount the history of the construction of the Salt Lake Temple in the late 1800's. In late July of 1847, the first group of Latter-day Saint pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. Within a few days, their leader Brigham Young indicated the precise location where the holy edifice should stand by striking the ground with his cane and announcing, "Here we will build a temple to our God." Apostle Wilford Woodruff marked the spot then and there. Construction of the temple began on February 14, 1853, following a groundbreaking ceremony conducted by Brigham Young. A granite deposit was found nearby, and workers began to hand-chisel massive granite blocks which weighed between 2500 and 5600 pounds. These large stones were transported by ox-drawn wagon (and later railroad) to the temple lot. Most of the labor was performed by volunteers who, despite their hardships in trying to settle a new land, gave freely of their time and skills. Brigham Young encouraged the Saints to make the Salt Lake Temple the best it could be. The prophet stated that he wanted "to see the Temple built in a manner that it will endure through the Millennium" (Journal of Discourses, 10:254). The temple was built ...

Salt Lake Temple Simbolism
Temple Facts The Salt Lake Temple was the fourth temple built in Utah (though its construction was started first) and the first in the Salt Lake Valley. The Salt Lake Temple was the only temple dedicated by President Wilford Woodruff. With its distinctive spires and statue of the angel Moroni, the Salt Lake Temple is an international symbol of the Church. The Salt Lake Temple is the largest temple (most square footage) of the Church. Original plans for the Salt Lake Temple called for two angel Moroni statues—one on the east central spire and one on the west. The Salt Lake Temple took 40 years to build with its highly ornate interior being completed in just a year. During the construction of the Salt Lake Temple, the St. George Utah Temple, Logan Utah Temple, and Manti Utah Temple were all started and completed. The walls of the Salt Lake Temple are nine feet thick at the base and six feet thick at the top. The Salt Lake Temple is the first temple to feature a standing angel Moroni statue, which was created by Paris-trained sculptor Cyrus E. Dallin. The Salt Lake Temple features beautiful hand-painted murals on the walls of its progressive-style ordinance rooms: Creation Room, Garden Room, World Room, Terrestrial Room (no murals), and Celestial Room (no murals). The Salt Lake Temple is one of two temples that still employs live acting for presentation of the endowment. (The other is the Manti Utah Temple.) The Salt Lake Temple was completed the afternoon before the ...

The Morning Breaks - Temple Square, Salt Lake Temple
The morning breaks, the shadows flee; Lo, Zion's standard is unfurled! The dawning of a brighter day, The dawning of a brighter day Majestic rises on the world. The clouds of error disappear Before the rays of truth divine; The glory bursting from afar, The glory bursting from afar Wide o'er the nations soon will shine. The Gentile fulness now comes in, And Israel's blessings are at hand. Lo, Judah's remnant, cleansed from sin, Lo, Judah's remnant, cleansed from sin, Shall in their promised Canaan stand. Jehovah speaks! Let earth give ear, And Gentile nations turn and live. His mighty arm is making bare, His mighty arm is making bare His cov'nant people to receive. Angels from heav'n and truth from earth Have met, and both have record borne; Thus Zion's light is bursting forth, Thus Zion's light is bursting forth To bring her ransomed children home.
