Diese Aufzeichnung ist ein Gedenkkonzert zum 250. Todestag von Johann Sebastian Bach, das am 28. Juli 2000 in der Leipziger Thomaskirche stattfand. Bekannterweise ist die Thomaskirche jener Ort, an dem Bach über 25 Jahre als Kantor tätig war. Die ausführenden Musiker dieser Aufnahme sind somit die direkten Nachfolger der Bach'schen Tradition und das Konzert erinnert an die musikalischen Gottesdienste jener Zeit. Die h-Moll Messe, die auch als "musikalisches Testament" Bachs gilt, wurde von August 1748 bis Oktober 1749 komponiert und zeugt von der großen künstlerischen Reife des Meisters. In der neueren Forschung gilt sie als sein letztes vollendetes Werk und ist auch in diesem Sinne von Interesse.

The first time I visited Leipzig, I took a photo standing next to the Bach statue outside of St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche). For some reason, I never bothered to go inside the church until recently. On my last visit to the city, I got myself all fired up for my Leipzig whirlwind tour. First, I stopped at the Starbucks near the University of Leipzig (Universität Leipzig). I had a Mocha Frappuccino, which gave me the energy to continue on up the road to Thomaskirche.
Fall is here, so the fountains outside of St. Thomas Church had been drained for the winter. But there were still plenty of diners eating and drinking under the restaurant umbrellas in the area -- heat lamps are such a great invention!
First, I walked up to the Bach statue. There were a group of Spanish tourists congregated around it, all vying for photos with the grand figurine. The Spanish tour guide droned on and on about something or other. I moved inside. The church has been beautifully restored. It's a quiet sanctuary in a city that's very lively. Some people were in the church to admire the architecture and history, while others were experiencing a spiritual moment.
Unlike nearby St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) there was no music. In fact, the churches had a very different vibe. St. Nicholas Church is bathed in light colors. It's bright and airy, while St. Thomas Church is dark with rich wood.
St. Thomas Church has a ton of historical paintings and religious relics. There's also a great display of vintage instruments that were used in the church throughout history. The instruments are accompanied by pages of musical notes and religious texts.
Thankfully, Thomaskirche allows photography and admission is free. The church has a box where they accept donations. I was happy to donate to keep such an inspiring building open to the public. According to literature at the church, they also play host to various concerts throughout the year. The St. Thomas Church Boys Choir is also very highly regarded. Famous around the world, it was founded in 1212!
St. Thomas Church also boasts two organs. One didn't match up with Bach's music, so another one was constructed just so his tunes could waft through the church.
Toward the end of this video, you can also see the statue of Felix Mendelssohn. The statue is located behind St. Thomas Church, and it commemorates the years Mendelssohn lived in Leipzig, from 1835-1847.

St. Thomas Church, Leipzig
The Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) is a Lutheran church in Leipzig, Germany. It is most famous as the place where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a Kapellmeister, and as the location of his remains.
History
There has been a church at the current site of the Thomaskirche since the 12th century. Between 1212 and 1222 the preceding church became the new St. Thomas Monastery of the Augustinian order. In 1217, The Minnesinger, or troubadour (see Minnesang), Heinrich von Morungen bequeathed to the church a relic of St. Thomas as he entered the order of canons after a trip to India. After several reconstructions (remains of an earlier Romanesque church were found during archaeological excavations), the current building, an example of late Gothic architecture, was consecrated by Thilo of Trotha, the Bishop of Merseburg, on April 10, 1496. The reformer Martin Luther preached here on Pentecost Sunday in 1539. Today, it is a Lutheran church.
The tower was first built in 1537 and reconstructed in 1702, leading to its current height of 68 meters.

Leipzig
Leipzig (/ˈlaɪpsɪɡ/; German: [ˈlaɪptsɪç]) is the largest city in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. With its population of 544,479 inhabitants (1,001,220 residents in the larger urban zone) Leipzig, one of Germany's top 15 cities by population, is located about 160 kilometers (99 miles) southwest of Berlin at the confluence of the White Elster, Pleisse, and Parthe rivers at the southerly end of the North German Plain.
Leipzig has been a trade city since at least the time of the Holy Roman Empire. The city sits at the intersection of the Via Regia and Via Imperii, two important Medieval trade routes. Leipzig became a major urban center within the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) after World War II, but its cultural and economic importance declined despite East Germany being the richest economy in the Soviet Bloc.
Leipzig later played a significant role in instigating the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, through events which took place in and around St. Nicholas Church. Since the reunification of Germany, Leipzig has undergone significant change with the restoration of some historical buildings, the demolition of others, and the development of a modern transport infrastructure. Leipzig today is an economic center and the most livable city in Germany, according to the GfK marketing research institution.Oper Leipzig is one of the most prominent opera houses in Germany, and Leipzig Zoological Garden is one of the most modern zoos in Europe and ranks first in Germany and second in Europe according to Anthony Sheridan. Leipzig is currently listed as Gamma World City and Germany's "Boomtown".

The first time I visited Leipzig, I took a photo standing next to the Bach statue outside of St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche). For some reason, I never bothered to go inside the church until recently. On my last visit to the city, I got myself all fired up for my Leipzig whirlwind tour. First, I stopped at the Starbucks near the University of Leipzig (Universität Leipzig). I had a Mocha Frappuccino, which gave me the energy to continue on up the road to Thomaskirche.
Fall is here, so the fountains outside of St. Thomas Church had been drained for the winter. But there were still plenty of diners eating and drinking under the restaurant umbrellas in the area -- heat lamps are such a great invention!
First, I walked up to the Bach statue. There were a group of Spanish tourists congregated around it, all vying for photos with the grand figurine. The Spanish tour guide droned on and on about something or other. I moved inside. The church has been beautifully restored. It's a quiet sanctuary in a city that's very lively. Some people were in the church to admire the architecture and history, while others were experiencing a spiritual moment.
Unlike nearby St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) there was no music. In fact, the churches had a very different vibe. St. Nicholas Church is bathed in light colors. It's bright and airy, while St. Thomas Church is dark with rich wood.
St. Thomas Church has a ton of historical paintings and religious relics. There's also a great display of vintage instruments that were used in the church throughout history. The instruments are accompanied by pages of musical notes and religious texts.
Thankfully, Thomaskirche allows photography and admission is free. The church has a box where they accept donations. I was happy to donate to keep such an inspiring building open to the public. According to literature at the church, they also play host to various concerts throughout the year. The St. Thomas Church Boys Choir is also very highly regarded. Famous around the world, it was founded in 1212!
St. Thomas Church also boasts two organs. One didn't match up with Bach's music, so another one was constructed just so his tunes could waft through the church.
Toward the end of this video, you can also see the statue of Felix Mendelssohn. The statue is located behind St. Thomas Church, and it commemorates the years Mendelssohn lived in Leipzig, from 1835-1847.

Except for those in travel blogging circles, Leipzig, Germany has been an unknown quantity among travelers until recently. As the tenth largest city in Germany with a population of only 570,000 people, it has an easy-going feel to it, and with a history stretching back to the Holy Roman Empire, it is an intriguing place for fans of culture and history. This and other topics will be covered in a Leipzig Germany Tour, which are offered by a number of providers easily found upon arrival.
Doing Leipzig solo
If you rather do a Leipzig Germany Tour by yourself, it is easy to hit all the major attractions in town within a day or two. Start by visiting St. Thomas Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach served as the cantor (i.e. he directed its choir) until his death in 1750. He is buried in the sanctuary of the church, and there is a museum here dedicated to his life's work, so be sure to pay your respects to the great composer by visiting for an hour or so.
Nikolaikirche is another church that is well worth your time. The largest in the city, it is best known for being one of the places where non-violent resistance against Communism in East Germany began. Starting in 1982, prayers for peace are held here every Monday. This event took on a political tone from 1989 to 1991, as the movement to end totalitarian rule in East Germany became a topic that was discussed during these meetings.
Those interested in the history of warfare should check out the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. A monument built to honor those that died in the Battle of Leipzig, it marks the spot where Russians, Prussians and Austrians joined forces to stop the advance of Napoleon's army. Located on the battlefield where 100,000 soldiers from both sides lost their lives, it is a sobering reminder of the staggering human cost of war.
On a lighter note, any Leipzig Germany Tour should include a visit to Market Square. Surrounded by buildings constructed in styles ranging from Late Gothic to Baroque, the centre of the square is home to food stalls and trucks, as well as an atmospheric Christmas Market in-season.

The huge variety of wild life is also excellent and all animals and facilities are maintained well.
St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) - Germany is famous for being the employer of Johann Sebastian Bach for the last 27 years of his life. So many of his great organ and vocal works were first performed in this mostly austere but also beautiful church. If you are in Leipzig it is a must see .
