Nikon has delivered a reasonably priced compact camera in the form of the Nikon Coolpix A camera that was announced at the Focus on Imaging show. The Nikon Coolpix A features a 16.1MP APS-C sized sensor that lacks an optical low-pass filter much like the recently announced Nikon D7100, Nikon say the Nikon Coolpix A has the same sensor as found with the Nikon D7000. Paired alongside an EXPEED 2 image processor, the ISO range for the Nikon Coolpix A is identical to the Nikon D7000 and can be set between 100-6400 and is extendable at the high end to an equivalent of ISO 25,600 in the the Hi2 setting.

Nikon D600 vs D7000 - Should You Upgrade to FX?
With the recent release of the "cheaper" full frame D600 from Nikon, one has to wonder whether the D7000 is still a good choice as a DSLR when it doesn't have the full frame sensor that the D600 does. Kai and Lok take a look at the two Nikon DSLRs in this video.

When Nikon announced the D600 it was pretty much no big surprise. What was a big surprise was the fact that they would have it before Photokina and months before Canons 6D.
The D600 is the first "affordable" FX Camera from Nikon at clocks in at $2,099.99 at AllensCamera.com. Now I am not going to sit here and run down the tech specs as most of you already know what they are. You also know that the most important thing about the camera are not the specs but how it actually handles in the real world shooting environment.
What I am going to try and do is give you my straight up feedback from using the camera in a tough shooting situation of a night high school football game. If a camera can handle low light shooting and being pushed to its limits than it can handle everything and anything.
First things first this camera is pretty small yet it feels very nice in the hands. The one I shot with did not have the vertical grip yet shooting vertical really was not a problem at all. The screen is huge and clear and the buttons are will be very familiar to anyone who has shot or held a D800, D800E or Nikon D4. There is something to be said for keeping the same button set up from camera to camera to camera. The same holds true for the menu system. Nikon does a great job keeping the menus consistant from one body to the next.
The real tell tail sign of a quality camera to me is how it handles in low light situations. All I can say is this camera passed the low light shooting test with flying colors!!! I pushed it to its max normal ISO of 6400 for shooting football and the grain structure looks amazing to me. It looks almost like a film grain which is what I am ok with seeing in my images.
I do hear complaining about noise quit often from people who zoom in on the file on their computer and thing that there should be no grain. Or they ask me what noise reduction software do I use to get rid of the grain. The answer to that is I DO NOT USE ANY NOISE REDUCTION SOFTWARE. I welcome the dots of grain and accept them with open arms as normal.
I speak to this in the video above but if your exposure is close, somewhere around spot on to a half of a stop off you will not have to worry about grain becoming an issue. Grain and noise become and issue when you totally miss your exposure and try to bring back the file. When you push the files to the max is when you start to see issues with the image. But keep in mind thats not the camera fault, thats the fault of the exposure and who ever set it, wink wink.
The bottom line is this camera passes the high ISO test from its normal range of 6400 ISO. Beyond that I did not push it to the H modes as they are not recommended. Since the camera did so well at 6400, there is no doubt in my mind it will hold up at the lower ISOs. You can see some examples of 800 and 1000 ISO with some sideline portraits I took of Sam with the 14-24 2.8. Those files are very clean, colorful and sharp.

Nikon D3200 Review
http://froknowsphoto.com/nikon-d3200-review/
Let me start of this review by reminding you that the NIkon D3200 is a basic beginner camera. I did not set out to compare the files to this camera or that camera. I simply wanted to use the camera for what it is and review it based on it being a very basic beginner model.
With that out of the way I think this is a no questions asked hands down perfect beginner camera for anyone looking to get their first DSLR. The price is not bad at all for what the camera offers you. A new 24 megapixel sensor, fast auto focus, solid HD video and a microphone input. These are qualities that you will find in higher end cameras and this is a sign of where basic cameras are going.
I used this camera locally in Philly, on the beach in Florida and at the BEAN and Wrigley Field in Chicago. I just used the camera, that is what its all about, getting out there and shooting and not over analyzing every single aspect of what a camera does or does not do.
Overal I think this is a SOLID SOLID camera in terms of price and quality. If I needed a third camera angle to capture video when I am recording I would have no problem picking up one of these bad boys.
Who is the Nikon D3200 for? This camera is for anyone from a stay at home mom or dad to someone who has always wanted to get into taking pictures. It is a great starting point and I fully recommend not over thinking the decision when it comes to your first camera and pick one. One recommendation that I always remind beginners about is the importance of buying good lenses. The Kit lens that the camera comes with is fine for snap shots but if your looking to get more out of your camera take a look at the Nikon 35mm 1.8. You may not understand right now the importance of better glass but over time you will see that lenses are more important than cameras.
If you think this camera is for you and you are looking to pick one up please support our friends at AllensCamera.com 215.547.2841. They have supported what I have been doing since day one no questions asked!!!

Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D - which one is better?
So, we reviewed the Nikon D7000 just a few days ago ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55MzLcjkahk ) and we liked it a lot. With the upgrades, it really has been upped a class, what with the 100% viewfinder, 6fps continuous burst, metal body, as well as 1080p video recording. So, it's only natural that lots of people have been asking us - Canon 7D vs Nikon D7000: which one is better? Well, we take a look in this video by taking photos of a model named Kinki cleaning a BMW.

Nikon 18-300mm VR Lens Review

When Nikon announced a new super telephoto DX Lens in the 18-300 VR I did not give much thought to it. As a full time pro this is not a lens that I would carry in my bag. However, this lens is not billed as a pro lens nor should any of us try and compare it to a pro lens.
I know a lot of you may be expecting me to say this smells like "don't buy it" but the truth is this lens is pretty good for what it offers. We will get to image quality and price in a few paragraphs but for now I want to remind you guys to look at this lens for who its geared towards.
This really is one lens that could replace three other lenses in your bag. This DX lens offers a huge zoom range from 18-300mm or the equivalent of 27-450mm. That is just an INSANE amount of reach. You can do everything form wide angle group shots to long distance sports captures all the way to shoot a building a long ways away.
With such a large range there are bound to be some issues. At 18mm you will notice the bowing of straight lines. These liens should be straight but instead take on an extreme bend which can be corrected in lightroom with the lens correction tool. It actually is a very effective tool when you want to get rid of those imperfections.
Another issue I saw with the lens was in the edge detail. You can see some major abbreviation going on from purples to other interesting colors. You will also notice some vignetting around the edges of the frame when you are shooting at the wider angles.
Now onto the positives about this lens. One its built extremely well with a metal mount and very nice VR mode with both active and standard. Two the range is just insane, to be able to go from an ultra wide to a full on detail shot at a distance makes this a winning lens.
There was one feature that surprised me more than anything. That was the ability to focus while zoomed out to 300mm from around 8 inches from the subject. To be able to close focus from that short of a distance is just incredible.
In the end you have to look at who this lens is for. Its for that person who does not want to take 2 or 3 kit lenses with them but once one lens. Sure that lens may be $1,000 but some people would rather pay that than have to not only change lenses but carry around multiple lenes.
Remember this is not a lens that a PRO would use on a photo shoot they were getting paid for. Its for anyone who just wants to capture the moment that was in front of them and not knit pick every single issue in the images.
If you are interested in picking up this or any other Nikon Lens please check out AllensCamera.com 215.547.2841.

Nikon 70-200 F4 VR REVIEW
http://froknowsphoto.com/nikon-70-200-f4-vr-review/ Click Here to access the FULL RES sample images.
Many people are always looking for smaller, lighter and better lenses and tend to turn to F4 lenses for that. Yes these lenses tend to be smaller and lighter but better may not always be the case. Lets take a deeper look at the Nikon 70-200 F4 VR and see where its ideal use would be and if I would have it in my own photo bag.
The first thing you notice about this lens when you take it out of the box is how much lighter it is than the 70-200 2.8 VRII model. Weight seems to be one of the main factors for people to consider an F4 over a 2.8. The build quality seems to be top noticed as you would expect from a pro lens. The zoom and focus rings seems to be nice and smooth and easy to operate.
Enough with the basic info lets jump into my true feelings about this lens. As you will see in the video I spend a lot of time trying to justify who this lens is really for. NIKON is pushing the fact that this is the first lens to offer the 5 stop VR capability. As most of you know VR helps you stabilize the image when you are not on a tripod or monopod. People also tend to confuse what VR really does do. It will not help you FREEZE motion or subjects who are moving.
Now that we have that out of the way we have to look at what uses there are for 5 stops of VR. The one constant I keep coming back to is 5 stops of VR is best used for hand holding while shooting VIDEO. As you will see in the review the new VR is beyond amazing. It allowed me to hand hold the lens zoomed out to 200mm and get images that are beyond stable. You can see me go from VR off to VR on and the proof is in the pudding.
You can see all of the sample images captured with this lens below and make your own judgements on the quality of the lens. I like to play with new gear but I am not the guy who is going to over analyze the sample images, I can leave that to you guys if you would like.
From what I saw the still images look great though at F4 you can see some slight darkening around the edges of the images. This is something that today is easily corrected in lightroom with the lens correction options and vignette controls.
I am sure many of you would like to know if I would replace my 2.8 for this F4. My answer is no, not for stills. I personally want to have the best quality glass and fastest apertures as possible. I am willing to carry around the extra weight at this time, maybe that will change as I get older but for now I want the best of the best with honors sir.
But on the flip side if I needed to shoot VIDEO with a lens in the range of 70-200 I would hands down go with the F4 over the 2.8. One the lens is so much lighter and easier to hand hold. Two, the 5 stops of VR is just insane and would allow me to hand hold in situations that just would not be possible before. For those reasons I would consider this lens for video production use.
Now we need to look at the price vs the other options out there. The Nikon 70-200 F4 VR sells for $1,399 new which is pretty pricy for a lens. The Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII sells for around $2,399 and the Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS sells for $1,399. If price is a major concern we have to look at F4 vs the Sigma OS. Which should you go with, is it better to have the Nikon or is it better to have the 2.8. As most of you know I favor the 2.8 over F4 any day of the week. But in this situation you have to ask yourself will you be using this lens for stills or for video. If its for video than there is no question that you go with the Nikon.
Here is where my advice will get a little dicey and possibly controversial. If you are on a DX camer and deciding between the Sigma or the F4 I would say go for the sigma and the 2.8. If you are shooting with an FX camera my advice would be neither of the previously mentioned lenses but to save up for the Nikon 70-200 2.8 unless your focus is video. I say this because of the quality you will get form the 2.8 lens.
So there you have it, my Nikon 70-200 F4 VR lens review. As you can tell I have given a vast array of options on this lens but ultimately it comes down to what you feel is best for your workflow. I have supplied you with my thoughts as well as all the samples images for you to analyze and come up with your own informed decision.

When Luminous Landscape's Nick Devlin received one of the few D800E cameras in Canada, we knew we'd have to take it out for a day of landscape photography. Nick and The Camera Store's Chris Niccolls took out the D800E and the fantastic Pentax 645D to see how they stacked up shooting the beautiful landscapes of Canmore Alberta.
