Toll rises in Sri Lanka prison riot
The number of people killed in Sri Lanka's worst prison riot in nearly three decades has risen to 16 while another 43 have escaped with injuries, officials say. The toll rose as three more people succumbed to their injuries following gun battles between rioting inmates and security personnel at Colombo's Welikada jail, Anil Jasinghe, Colombo National Hospital director, said on Saturday. Sri Lanka rebels aim for glory
Some Tamil Tiger rebels became good marksmen during Sri Lanka's long civil war, and now that the conflict is over, they are getting even better, with some help from their former enemies. More than 300 former Tamil Tigers fighters are now in rehabilitation programmes, and some are preparing to compete for their country. Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernadez reports from Colombo.

Tamil Goodbye - Sri Lanka
Since the start of 2012 the number of Sri Lankan refugees - mostly Tamils - headed for Christmas Island has swelled. Are they fleeing persecution or merely opportunists seeking a shortcut to Australia? "I lost my money, my job, my land...everything," explains an asylum seeker intercepted on a boat bound for Australia. Thousands continue to make the journey, claiming to be in search of a life free from persecution. "Before the paramilitary could do anything to me, I fled the country," says one man. But while the Sri Lankan government maintain that life is improving and people should be more patient, its message appears to be falling on deaf ears. This report follows the Sri Lankan navy as it intercepts another boat loaded with asylum seekers bound for Australia, and asks: now the country's civil war is over, why are things so bad that people are still desperate to leave? Sri Lanka: reconciliation and justice
16/05/12 Nearly three years after the end of the 26-year civil war in Sri Lanka that reportedly left an estimated 80000-100000 dead, questions are still arising about alleged war crimes and how they will be addressed. The Killing Fields, first broadcast by Channel 4 in June last year and a follow up aired this March called Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished, have been significant in bringing evidence of executions, the shelling of civilians and other atrocities to light. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence rejects the evidence, however, arguing that it has been falsified by Channel 4 and that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE ) were responsible for a proportion of the civilian casualties. It also rejected calls from the UN-led investigation into alleged war crimes, opting for a locally-organised investigation, the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). What action will the Sri Lankan government take in light of new footage and will it be forced address the issue of high-command responsibility? After the failing of the international community to prevent such atrocities, what role can they play in the future? Join us at the Frontline Club to discuss the impact of Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and the situation today in Sri Lanka. Chaired by Stephen Sackur, the host of BBC Hardtalk. With: Callum Macrae, journalist, filmmaker and Director of both Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished that documents ...

Shatashloki Ramayana (Telugu)
Ramayana is popularly known as 'Adi Kaavya' (the first literature). It consists of 24000 verses in 7 Chapters (called Kaandas). It is extremely popular among Hindus, Buddhists and Jains in India and other countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Burma and Malaysia.
The scripture begins as a dialogue between Sage Valmiki and the celestial saint Narada. Sage Valmiki asks Narada about the ideal being -- Perfection Incarnate -- the person with the noblest qualities ever seen. Narada proceeds to answer Valmiki with the divine story of Lord Rama -- The Ramayana.Shata-Shloki Ramayana (Ramayana in 100 verses) is the first canto of this monumental epic written in the 32-syllable meter called the 'Anushtup'. The Shata-Shloki is an abridged version of the whole tale describing the major events in the following sequence:
1. Baala Kaanda : The birth of Rama, his childhood and his marriage to Seeta.
2. Ayodhya Kaanda: Preparations for Rama's coronation and his exile to the forest.
3. Aranya Kaanda: Rama in forest and the abduction of Seeta by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka
4. Kishkindha Kaanda: Rama's meeting with Hanuman, the slaying of Vanara King Vaali and installation of Vaali's younger brother Sugreeva as the ruler of Kishkindha
5. Sundara Kaanda: Hanuman's heroics, his flight to Lanka and his discovery of Seeta
6. Yuddha Kaanda: The epic battle between Rama and Ravana.
7. Uttara Kaanda: Lord Rama's coronation, his reign and the Lord's return to Vaikuntha
Shata shloki Ramayana ends with a Phala Shruti narrating the benefits of chanting and listening to this hymn. His Holiness Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji of Avadhoota Datta Peetham has sonorously chanted these 100 verses in the audio album "Shata Shloki Ramayana" in the Ragas Mohana, Charukeshi, Shuddha Dhanyasi, Hamsadhwani, Sriraga, Purvikalyani, Peelu, Sallapam and Madhyamavati.
This slideshow video includes the audio of the album with appropriate visuals from Ramayana sketched by an artist per Sri Swamiji's direction. Also included in the video are the brief inner meanings of each verse in Telugu and its Telugu transliteration for easy learning.
