VERDONE racconta SERGIO LEONE

Tutti morti! Ecco la tua rivoluzione!
Per favore, non parlarmi più di rivoluzioni! »

Gilt MANual Minute: Peskowitz vs. Wooster: The Ultimate Street Style Showdown
On the eve of another round of men's fashion shows in Europe—a k a that biannual street style extravaganza where some stuff also happens on the runway—Josh and I invited the always well turned out Nick Wooster to join us for a chat. Our topic? How guys who aren't accustomed to being shot by Tommy Ton can bring a street-style level of detail into their own wardrobe.
But first, a duel! (Hat-tip to our pal Jake Davis and the ghost of Sergio Leone.)
And be sure to check out Pesko's Pics, Josh's ever-updated photo diary of the most stylish people, places, and things he comes across in Florence, Milan, and Paris.
Special thanks to Ana, Sean, and the rest of the gang at Tiny's for letting us shoot in their hugely awesome bar and restaurant. Go there, have a Michters, and tip Teddy well.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST - Ennio Morricone/Sergio Leone
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), is a Euro/Spaghetti Western directed by Sergio Leone. The story focuses on brutish gunfighter Frank (Henry Fonda), who dreams of becoming a tycoon, but is still prepared to resort to trusted methods to drive widow Jill McBain (Claudia Cardinale) off the land coveted by a ruthless railroad company. However, Frank must also deal with a mysterious harmonica player (Charles Bronson), as well as sympathetic outlaw Cheyenne (Jason Robards), if he is to achieve his goal. Bernardo Bertolucci wrote a script for Leones magnificent attempt to make the definitive western (I had no lire and I thought Leone was brilliant and vulgar), borrowing from every western the future director knew.
References include; High Noon, Johnny Guitar, Shane, The Searchers and The Iron Horse.
The stereotypes include Henry Fonda cast radically against type as a blue-eyed sadistic killer, Charles Bronson as the avenger with no name who wears a musical instrumental around his neck, Jason Robards as a romantic bandit, and Claudia Cardinale as a dance-hall girl.
The film features leitmotifs that relate to each of the main characters (each with their own unique theme music) as well as to the spirit of the American West. It was Leone's desire to have the music available and played during filming. Leone had Morricone compose the score before shooting started and would play the music in the background for the actors on set. No wonder many critics described the film as an operatic masterpiece.
In the Magnificent Seven, Charles Bronson's character whittles a piece of wood. In OUATIW, he does the same, although in a different context. The Magnificent Seven was based on the Seven Samuri by Akira Kurasawa whose Yohimbo(The Bodyguard) was the inspiration (and later, litigation) behind a Leone's A Fistful of Dollars.
The film has the longest credits of all: they sprawl through the first twelve minutes.

Why Sergio Leone was a great director. (Prison escape scene)
That accent you're hearing is Dutch. I compare two very, very similar western scenes about a prison escape. Note the similarities: It's night, the prisoner is asleep, escape by destroying the window, riding away in the dark and not a single word is spoken. The scenes even have almost exactly the same length.
Still, Leone's scene is better, because of his use of the music of Ennio Morricone. Thus, it's only Leone's very own style that makes this scene so great, and it says a great deal about why he made great films.
It's interesting that both directors, Sergio Leone and Giulio Petroni, used the same composer, had Lee Van Cleef in one of the leading roles and even shot the film in the exact same western-styled towns, built in Spain.
