[edit] Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲): semantic  ("water") + phonetic  – a type of water. Note that 彎 means “bend, curve” (from  ("bow"), hence “curve (of a bow)”), so there are also connotations of “bend in the stream”, or the curve of a bay or inlet.
