Austria/Italy: War of the Words in South Tyrol | European Journal
A political fight has erupted in the idyllic mountainous region about signs in German. Many rivers, lakes, meadows, paths and mountains in South Tyrol have had German names for centuries.Italy's minister for the regions now wants signs across South Tyrol to be in both German and Italian and he has threatened to send in the army to remove any that are only in German. The province of South Tyrol enjoys wide-ranging autonomy, and that is something the government in Rome does not like. It wants to pursue the Italianization of the region, which was annexed at the end of the First World War.

Generally best known for its spa resorts, it is located within a basin, surrounded by mountains standing up to 3335 m (11000 ft), at the entrance to the Passeier Valley, the Vinschgau and the Ulten Valley. In the following videos, I`ll be taking you with me on my trip to the Meran region in South Tirol, which I first visited together with my parents in 1977, at the age of 12. On the morning of Thursday, the 19th of July 2012, we took the ICE to Munich at 9.54 am, arriving there at 1.10pm, and continuing our journey at 1.31pm, destination Bozen. It`s always an uplifting feeling, seeing the Alps appear on the horizon. Soon we found ourselves on the Brenner, where it seriously started to pour with rain -- it was summer 2012 after all, and you only need to take a look at our Holland trip and my Spessart tour to realise that it was the same everywhere. But in Bozen -- at least on this particular day -- we were greeted by sunshine and searing heat. We got the connection to Meran right away. In the evening, a welcome dinner of "Herrengeröstel", a Tirol speciality dish of beef with bacon, onion and potato, and sausage salad. Thunderclouds were coming down the valley. Soon it was raining just as heavily as it had that afternoon on the Brenner and a few days previously on my Spessart tour. View of the „Ifinger". Unfortunately, Annie`s Ice-Cream Parlour, of which I had fond childhood memories of ice-cream in bucket-size portions, no longer exists.
