Ancient Khoisan (San) Tribe
Independent Documentary "Bushman's Secret" By Rehad Desai.
Rehad Desai travels to the Kalahari to investigate global interest in ancient Bushmen knowledge, he meets Jan van der Westhuizen, a fascinating Khomani San traditional healer. Jan's struggle to live close to nature is hampered by centuries of colonial exploitation of the San Bushmen and of their land. Unable to survive as they once did hunting and gathering, the Khomani now live in a state of poverty that threatens to see the last of this community forever.
One plant could make all the difference. Hoodia, a cactus used by Bushmen for centuries, has caught the attention of a giant pharmaceutical company. It now stands to decide the fate of the Khomani San.
Bushman's Secret features breathtaking footage of the Kalahari landscape, and exposes us to a world where modernity collides with ancient ways, at a time when each has, strangely, come to rely on the other.
Evicted from their ancestral lands, forced to abandon their native languages, and left to fend for themselves in a state of brutal poverty on the fringes of South African society, the Bushmen now face further exploitation, since the hoodia cactus (a source of food and medicinal healing) is being taken from their remaining lands by the conglomerate Unilever for use as a dubious weight loss product (ironically, Unilever also claims to be the "world's largest ice cream manufacturer," surely a contributing factor to obesity). Despite an agreement signed with the South African government for profits from the harvesting of hoodia, the Bushmen have yet to enjoy any financial returns. Bushman's Secret serves up a shameful indictment of contemporary South African government, which would sooner kowtow to multinational corporate demands than provide basic services for its own people. Highly recommended.

Lyrics Kom Khoisan
Kom khoi san kry terug jou land
Coloureds kom van khoi san verstand
Kykie verstaan die San behoort aanie land
Land kannie gekoop word 'ie, so hou jou blerrie rand
Wattekwaan in Khoe mean Xhosa "Angry looking man"
Elke click in isiXhosa is oorspronklik vannie San
Lag vir "Gods Must Be Crazy", ma rie San issie vaakie
Wie's jou dom darkie, Afrikaans kom van ie kaap hie
Nou word elke dag, tweede nuwe jaar gemaak hie
Nie net vir 'n party of apaart hie
Hie's elke sogenoemde ras gemix ou bra
Ma daais o'right, humanity (mensdom), ko van Afrika ...
Wie's oppie aanval
N Belofte is n comfort to a fool
Babilon is crucial Ghetto Youth
Wie's oppie ytkyk
In Hi Jack City, diesie land van InI
(luister na my woorde en my cry)
Kom khoi san kry terug jou land
Colourdes kom van khoi san verstand
Ek is n Khoi, n San
Stap saam die maan -- met wild in my hand
En n dans- wat jou sit in n trans
My voorgeslag kon reen maak,
Stories vertel -- was woelag!
Tog fashionable -- het krale gemaak en gedra
Was multi coloured, universal...
Geguide, deur die sterre en die maan
Tekens gelos op klippe en op land
Medisyne gekry --natuurlik-uit die aarde
Eers goed saam geliewe
Nou's alles mixed tesame!!
Die gevoel is daar, ignorance loop in gevaar
Broese cruise in Mercedes 'B's en vang bullets en sake
Anne girl het n seun gebaar vroeg in haar teens
Idolise TV en plaas haar hoop innie drugs
Die worst virus op computers is peadophiles
Wat laaties victimize vanaf 7 -10 jaar en...
Townships is ill, police waentjies skarrel virrie kill
Brasse raak missing elke naweek
Ek develop n fil vannie teenoorgestelde
Laat on sweet waar ons staan
Moenier: praat die waarheid?
Alles was so mooi en groen vir ons
Kinders dans ommie vuur, ennie vrouens maakie kos.
Die man vertel n storie van n tyd
Kom khoi san kry terug jou land
Colourdes kom van khoi san verstand

KhoeKhoegowab Lesson No:1
KhoeKhoegowab is the most populous and widespread of the Khoisan languages. It belongs to the Khoe language family, and is spoken in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa by the Namaqua, Damara, and Haillom, as well as smaller ethnic groups such as the #Khomani. The name for Nama speakers, Khoekhoen, is from the Nama word khoe "person", with reduplication and the suffix -n to indicate the plural.
Thusnelda Dausas and Gabriel /Khoeseb are two young teachers from the primery school, a small school vilage called Baumgartsbrunn in Namibia.

Khoisan Fair Trade Trust
This little movie was made by two Swedish students in 2009/2010. It tells a bit of the story of Khoisan Natural Salt at Velddrift on the West Coast of South Africa, but primarily, the story is about fair trade and the difference the fair trade trust made in the life of one woman.
While some of the commentary is in Swedish, all the interviews are in English.
The movie was cut and edited from its original length - apologies to the makers and the musician - we had to let the most beautiful bits go...
Thankfully, the magic of the West Coast, the love of the film-makers for their subject and the vital energy of the salt endures... Enjoy!

The most complex languages
Although there are many complex languages in the world (and complexity is a relative concept) - Irish, Sanskrit, or Navaho can be considered as complex as well phonetically as grammatically, and some African, Amazonian or Papuan languages have very uncommon patterns - the following languages can be considered as champions:
the world's most complex sound systems are found in the Northwest Caucasian language Ubykh (now extinct) and the Khoisan languages of southern Africa, but also in the Salish languages of the Pacific Northwest (the Canadian province of British Columbia and the American states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana), characterised by agglutinativity and astonishing consonant clusters;
Archi, a Northeast Caucasian language, has a fairly complex sound system and a very complex word-building system. If you count all the possible forms of a Latin verb, you come up with about 150 forms or so. If you count all the possible forms of an Archi verb, you come up with 1.5 million different forms!
Otherwise, the world's most complex word building systems are the Caddoan languages of the North American Plains (Pawnee and Arikara especially) and the world's most complex meaning building systems are the Australian aboriginal languages.

Bushmen Musical Tribute
Here is a tribute to one of the oldest peoples on Earth, the fascinating Bushmen, or Khoisan, famous for their click languages and their egalitarian social systems. This endangered nomadic people (most Bushmen are now sedentarized), who once inhabited an immense territory, far beyond the Kalahari, needs consideration. The first song is a traditional one, the second song, entitled "Kalahari Bushman", is a free composition by the great Afro-American singer Myriam Burton, from her very rare LP "African Lament" (see my other clip about her, "Wine Palm Party").
Enjoy the eternal beauty of the Bushmen!

The African Spear dancers performing at OXFAM's GROW launch in Johannesburg, South Africa. The dance draws on Southern African indigenous knowledge systems and emphasises the role of food in culture.
The dancers incorporate folk lore from Botswana and Nambia, and draw on the Khoi San traditions of dance. The dance tells the story of the hunt for food, with dancers taking on roles of various animals.
