Arabian Sea - Fishing on the coasts
Travelling through the coast of the Arabian sea in the state of Kerala, you come across amazing scenarios in which people try to eke out a living. Fishing is one major activity because of its large coast line. Fishing has evolved and here you see a lot of mechanised boats, these boats are modifications of the traditional boats in which a group of men would use oars to navigate. Now the oars have been replaced by Yamaha engines, one of the problems with this is, that there is hydrocarbon residue that is polluting the water and people say that the taste of the fish from such areas has a hint of kerosene or gasoline. The fish that is caught in these boats are auctioned. Some of them end in far off cities that do not have access to fresh fish. Today it appears that they are having a great catch. There is much to change in terms of facilities and hygiene.

Pirates of the Arabian Sea
Today we will talk about the pirates of the Arabian Sea. The number of attacks by the 21st century pirates off the coast of Somalia has sky-rocketed in recent years. The latest case is the hijacking of a Ukrainian freighter 'Faina', which is loaded with arms: tanks, artillery, grenade launchers and ammunition. The Russian captain died in the siege. Several months earlier another freighter, Lehmann Timber, was captured by pirates in the same waters. Its captain, Valentin Bartashev, is the guest on our programme today.

Socotra the "jewel" of biodiversity in the Arabian sea
Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands and islets in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa some 190 nautical miles S of the Arabian peninsula, belonging to the Republic of Yemen. The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora. Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else. Botanists rank the flora of Socotra among the ten most endangered island flora in the world. One of the most striking of Socotra's plants is the dragon's blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was the dragon's blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye. (Source: Wikipedia) **Due to copyright infringement, I did an audioswap. The music is now from the album: For Africa Vol. 1 "How Beautiful" sung by Zani**

Empty Quarter - George Steinmetz
I became captivated by Arabia's Empty Quarter as a young man when I read Wilfred Thesiger's Arabian Sands. The Empty Quarter is larger than France without a single permanent point of water or human habitation. It's both the world's largest sand sea and one of the hottest places on earth, and has only been traversed a handful of times. I didn't want to repeat Thesiger's epic journeys many decades later, but when I discovered motorized paragliding I found a way to visualize this remote landscape in a new way. I made three paragliding trips into the sands, first for GEO in Saudi Arabia, and then returned two years later to go from Riyadh to Oman and Yemen for National Geographic, and finally made a personal trip to the southern most reaches of the U.A.E. to complete my field work. What I found was one of the most beautiful and unseen wilderness on earth. On its fringes I encountered elements the oil wealth that has forever changed Arabia, but I also found Bedouins still clinging to traditions, and offering up a level of hospitality that was truly humbling. This body of work would simply not have been possible without their kindness.
Empty Quarter is George's second book, published by Harry N. Abrams. This is the most extensive compilation of photographs ever taken in the Arabian Desert. Measuring 9.5 x 13 inches, the book has 208 pages with 150 color photos and captions.

NASA - Aurorae from Space
Lately, the International Space Station has been flying through geomagnetic storms, giving astronauts an close-up view of the aurora borealis just outside their windows. These videos were taken by the crew of Expedition 30 on board the International Space Station. First, get an introduction into the beauty of aurorae.
1st Segment:
The sequence of shots was taken March 3, 2012 from 17:59:48 to 18:16:25 GMT, on a pass from eastern Kenya, near the Indian Ocean, to the South Indian Ocean, east of the Kerguelen Islands. This video begins as the ISS travels southeast from eastern Africa over the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The first land we see is that of the Mauritius and Reunion Islands east of Madagascar. The pass continues over the Indian Ocean, where there are heavy clouds blocking the view of the water. Finally, the Aurora Australis begins to appear, as well as a faded view of the Milky Way.
2nd Segment:
The sequence of shots was taken March 4, 2012 from 17:19:17 to 17:27:10 GMT, on a pass over the South Indian Ocean. This video again focuses on the Aurora Australis as the ISS passes over the South Indian Ocean, from northeast of the Kerugelen Islands to south of Australia. The streaks of the aurora are very visible and active in this video, as the ISS passes right over the green lights.
3rd Segment:
The sequence of shots was taken March 10, 2012 from 14:49:58 to 15:05:37 GMT, on a pass from the South Indian Ocean to southeast New Zealand. This video mainly focuses on the Aurora Australis over the Southern Hemisphere. As the ISS traveled southeast and then northeast, the crew captured the bands of the Aurora Australis as the Milky Way made an appearance in the star field.

PNS Shah Jahan (Type 21 frigate) - Pakistan Navy - Part 1
PAF s' Multimedia paffalcons.com Pakistan Navy is responsible for Pakistan's 1046 kilometer (650 mile) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the defense of important harbors. Pakistan Navy is a small but a well trained and a hard hitting force that has a significant sea denial capability. Its arsenal of anti-ship missiles carried by ships, submarines and aircraft are potent enough to challenge even a large surface force in the confines of North Arabian Sea. PNS Shahjahan is one of the frontline surface unit of PN which is equipped with modern weapons and sensors to effectively operate in multi threat scenario. Ship has participated in all sea programs with alacrity. Besides, the ship has also exercised with Multi national Navies on numerous occasions. The ship has carried Pakistani Flag on goodwill cruises to Far East, Gulf and Africa. PNS Shahjahan has the experience to represent PN in Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan (CMCP). Fisherman's Futures
The Arabian Sea is one of the world's richest fisheries, yet until recently fishermen living along its coast in Yemen remained desperately poor. This video looks at how an IFAD-supported project helped transform poor fishermen into successful fish exporters, who now sell their catch to buyers from Saudi Arabia, Japan and Europe.
