Amazing Journey over Indian Ocean on Pamban Bridge
The Pamban bridge is built on Palk strait connects rameswaram on Pamban island to India. It is India's first sea bridge and India's second longest sea bridge constructed at a length of 2.3 km.It has both railway bridge and cantilever railway bridge. The adjoining islands and parallel rail bridge below can be viewed from the elevated two-lane road bridge,.
The railroad bridge is a double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge.About 10 ships, cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge every month. It is also known as Indira Gandhi bridge.
It carries meter gauge trains on it. However, the Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that completed on Aug. 12, 2007. The scenery around the bridge is breathtaking. The view of the distant sea and the string of islands on the left of Pamban island is simply awesome.

The Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It was India's first sea bridge. It is the second longest sea bridge in India (after Bandra-Worli Sea Link) at a length of about 2.3 km. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through.
Inaugural Plaque
The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m) and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge.
The railway bridge historically carried metre-gauge trains on it, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug. 12, 2007. Until recently, the two leaves of the bridge were opened manually using levers by workers. About 10 ships — cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers — pass through the bridge every month. From the elevated two-lane road bridge, adjoining islands and the parallel rail bridge below can be viewed.
Pamban Bridge
After completion of bridge metre-gauge lines were laid by them from Mandapam up to Pamban Station, from here the railway lines bifurcated into two directions one towards Rameshwaram about 6.25 miles (10.06 km) up and another branch line of 15 miles (24 km) terminating at Dhanushkodi. The section was opened to traffic in 1914.
The noted boat mail ran on this track between 1915 and 1964 from Madras-Egmore up to Dhanushkodi, from where the passengers were ferried to Talaimannar in Ceylon. The metre-gauge branch line from Pamban Junction to Dhanushkodi was abandoned after it was destroyed in a cyclone in 1964.
According to Dr Narayanan, the bridge is located at the "world's second highly corrosive environment", next to Miami, US, making the construction a challenging job. The location is also a cyclone-prone high wind velocity zone. This Bridge consist of 143 piers and the centre span is a Schrezers rolling type lift span. It's 220 ft (67 m) long and each of 100 tonnes.
On 13 January 2013 the bridge suffered minor damages when a naval barge that went adrift close to the Pamban Rail Bridge has collided on the century old structure that's vying for UNESCO's heritage status. The ship that was towing a naval barge from Kolkata to a port near Mumbai first went aground hitting rocks on the January 10 following bad weather. Disaster followed as the vessel remained stuck just 50 metres away from the rail bridge. The barge that was afloat around 100 metres away hit the Pamban Rail Bridge.

Katchatheevu St.Antony's Church History & Current Festival -2013-02-23
Tamil Nadu government has imposed a five-day ban on fishing activities in the Palk Strait, a waterway of Bay of Bengal separating India from Srilanka in view of the 2 days "St.Antony's Church Festival" scheduled to be held at Katchatheevu island on February 23 and 24.
The ban was part of security measures to avert any intrusion of anti-social elements, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department Thilomin Thyagarajan told UNI today. We have stopped issuing fishing tokens this morning and the fishermen will be allowed to begin their fishing activities from February 25 onwards," he said.
Although 900 mechanized fishing boats were in operational in Rameswaram - one of the major marine food centre in South India, about 600-700 boats used to venture into the Sea for fishing trip in alternative days. Besides, the country boats will also keep off the Sea for the five days.
Meanwhile, hectic preparations were on for the Katchatheevu festival. The Ramanathapuram district administration had already instructed the pilgrims coming from all over Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states to produce attested No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their respective police stations, along with their applications to travel to katchatheevu to attend the festival.
The pilgrims were barred from carrying Indian currency notes, liquor, inflammable materials like kerosene, stove, cigarettes, arms and ammunitions. The pilgrims were advised to report at the Rameswaram fishing jetty on the morning of February 23 and after a thorough check up by the security agencies, they will set sail to the Katchatheevu Island with Indian Coast Guard (ICG) protection.
The ICG will accompany the pilgrims up to the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), where they will be handed over to the SriLankan navy to head for the Katchatheevu. The festival will begin on February 23 with the hoisting of flag at the church. About 4000 pilgrims were expected to attend the festival this year.
The 275-acre uninhabited Island of Katchatheevu in the Palk Strait was gifted to Lanka in 1974 by the then Prime Minister Indhra Gandhi in a goodwill gesture. The Island became a centre of controbversy, after the SriLankan government banned the entry of Indians to participate in Antony's Church festival in the year 1982 and denied permission to the Indian fishermen to poach around the Island, subsequent to the intensification of the civil war in the Island nation.
Thereafter, several Indian fishermen were killed and injured in recurring attacks by Lankan navy on several occasions, prompting the regional parties to pressurize the Centre to retrieve the Island from Lanka.

22 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan navy:
COLOMBO/TUTICORIN: Twenty two Indian fishermen were arrested on Sunday and their trawlers seized by Sri Lankan naval personnel for allegedly violating the island nation's international maritime boundary.
The fishermen from Karavaikulam in Tuticorin in southern Tamil Nadu were fishing in three mechanised boats and one country boat fitted with outboard motor off Kalpittiya when they were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan navy, fisheries officials said in Tuticorin.
They said the mechanised boats belonged to Anthony Muthu, Gnanaprakash, Palpandi while the country boat was owned Anthony Michale Nicholas.
Tuticorin assistant director of fisheries Prabhavathi said the 22 were arrested when they were fishing off Kalpittya in the north of Sri Lanka.
Quoting information received by the Coast Guard and Marine Police, Q-Branch Inspector Kennedy in Tuticorin said the fishermen had been taken to Kalpittiya.
In Colombo, a Sri Lankan Navy spokesman said 16 fishermen were arrested for violating Sri Lanka's international maritime boundary.
Fishermen in Sri Lanka's north had last month staged a protest march to ask authorities to prevent Indian fishermen from "poaching" in Sri Lankan waters.
The arrest of the Tuticorin fishermen came even as a large number of their colleagues from Ramanathapuram and Nagapattinam districts in a separate incident were early this morning pelted with stones and bottles allegedly by Sri Lankan naval personnel while fishing off Katchatheevu, causing damage to some boats.
The fishermen were fishing in about 1,400 boats near Kathchatheevu, an islet in Palk Strait ceded by India to Sri Lanka, when the Lankan navy men who came in a ship and a small boat allegedly attacked them, fisheries officials said in Rameswaram.
Incidents of Tamil Nadu fishermen coming under mid-sea attack is an issue in the state while their counterparts in Sri Lanka accuse them of poaching and demand action to prevent it.
Recently, minister of state in the PMO V Narayanasamy had said India and Sri Lanka were close to clinching an agreement on drawing a fishing boundary in the Palk Strait that would end recurring incidents of fishermen coming under attacks and being arrested on the charge of poaching.

Tamil Nadu on the move...
Tamil Nadu is one of the 28 states of India. Its capital is Chennai, the largest city. Tamil Nadu lies in the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula and is bordered by the union territory of Pondicherry, and the states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. It is bound by the Eastern Ghats in the north, the Nilgiri, the Anamalai Hills, and Palakkad on the west, by the Bay of Bengal in the east, the Gulf of Mannar, the Palk Strait in the south east, and by the Indian Ocean in the south.
Tamil Nadu is the eleventh largest state in India by area and the seventh most populous state. It is the second largest state economy in India as of 2012. The state ranked among the top 5 states in India in Human Development Index as of 2006. Tamil Nadu is also the most urbanised state in India. The state has the highest number (10.56%) of business enterprises and stands second in total employment (9.97%) in India,[6] compared to the population share of about 6%.
The region has been the home of the Tamil people since at least 500 BCE. Its official language Tamil has been in use in inscriptions and literature for over 2000 years. Tamil Nadu is home to many natural resources, Hindu temples of Dravidian architecture, hill stations, beach resorts, multi-religious pilgrimage sites and eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
