French army to pull out of Mali within weeks
www.euronews.com French defence minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, says France could start withdrawing its troops from Mali within a few weeks, handing over responsibility for security to an African force. There are currently around 4000 French troops in the West African country and Le Drian said this would not be increased. On Wednesday French and Malian Troops fought Islamist Rebels in the Sahara, while joint patrols searched for insurgents in the scrubland surrounding the trading towns of Timbuktu and Gao. Gao was hit by rockets fired from the bush on Tuesday, and some residents say they still do not feel safe. "I don't know what the army is doing," said resident Adama Younes. "If Gao is not protected for 50 kilometres around and if a MUJAO (Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa) fighter can set himself up just ten metres from here and fire things like this at us, what's the use of the army being here?," Younes continued. With so few troops securing an area more than double the size of France, Paris has appealed for the swift deployment of a UN-backed African military force, but this has been slowed due to a lack of transport and equipment. Canada: "O Canada" — French Army Choir, Republican Guard (RWC 2007)
"O Canada" is the national anthem of Canada; the music was composed by Calixa Lavallée. The original French lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe Basile Routhier, as a French-Canadian patriotic song for the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. The English version that has gained the widest currency was written in 1908 by Robert Stanley Weir, a lawyer and at the time Recorder of the City of Montréal. "God Save the Queen" is now Canada's royal anthem, while "The Maple Leaf Forever" is virtually forgotten.

Regional impact of war in Mali
French military action -- Opération Serval -- against Islamists trying to take control of northern Mali has moved into a new phase: the deployment of troops. While air raids have not stopped, now 800 French soldiers are on Malian soil. President François Hollande said in Paris that this number will soon rise to 2500. "Our mission is not over. Remember, it is to prepare for sending in an African intervention force, to allow Mali to recover its territorial integrity, in line with the resolutions of the UN Security Council." Paris wants to hand over command of the mission as soon as possible to a force promised by The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS). That force is supposed to receive European Union training, which is expected to take some time. This was agreed in November in Bamako. Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo, the President of the ECOWAS Commission said that community must "more than ever mobilise for Mali and be ready to help defend its territorial integrity, dismantle terrorist and criminal networks, and to totally re-establish the authority of the state." The networks referred to are those of the Islamist combatants, who, according to American estimates, number between 800 and 1200, and, according to ECOWAS estimates double that, split into three groups: the Timbuktu-based al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Kidal-based Ansar Dine and MUJWA in Gao.

Mali- French forces in 'street battles' in Diabali
In Mali street battles are said to have been taking place between French special forces and Islamist militants in the town of Diabali, which fell into rebel hands on Monday. Reports say French troop reinforcements have been arriving in the zone where jihadist groups are active. French and Malian soldiers have been heading north from Bamako, the African country's capital, as the ground operation gets underway. On Tuesday hundreds of troops headed north from Niono. Diabali, 50 kilometres away, was bombarded several times by the French air force. But witnesses say militants are still there. "We're in a better position than last week but the combat continues and it will be long, let's be honest, the goal is to make sure that Mali regains all of its territory's sovereignty," said the French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. In Bamako there is a sense of relief at the French intervention. "I am happy, very happy about the arrival of the French, for the freedom of the Malian people. There you are. We want the unity of our country and a Republican state and throw out once and for all the terrorists and narco-traffickers," said resident Oumar Camara. President Hollande has said the aim is to "destroy the terrorists". The number of French troops in the country is set to treble, before a West African force becomes operational. Army chiefs from the West African force are meeting in Bamako to fine-tune the operation, being launched under a UN mandate.

French and Malian forces move onto Timbuktu
Paratroopers from the French foreign legion have taken control of the north of Timbuktu. The French military says it has set up checkpoints on the outskirts of the city on access routes. Al Jazeera filmed this exclusive footage inside Timbuktu, showing fighters of the Ansar el-Din militia who have occupied the city for ten months vacating their bases. They have told Al Jazeera it is a tactical retreat to regroup and plan a later assault. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports.

Mali Mess: France drags US & UK into intervention quagmire
Britain has sent one of its cargo warplanes to Mali to back the French-led military campaign against Islamist rebels there. London says that more help is to follow, with Washington also pledging its assistance. The French military has been involved in combat action in the west African nation since Friday - in trouble which some see as blowback from the allies' recent interventions in the region. New NATO War In Mali - A Closer Look
Video theme song:www.youtube.com A Useful Idiot brings up a little background history to expand the view of what is unfolding in Mali, an important step for NATO and the US as strategy now moves from Northern Africa south.France is spearheading to make it appear as if it wasn't US foreign policy but it is a remarkable combo - French special forces and air force,US air force, drones, mercenaries and US black ops, the west African union force, and the Mali army. The same blueprint applied everywhere else is being used here with a few tailored variations - old ethnic rivalries and colonial borders redressed, jihadist elements as a cover, lucrative training and arming of native armies, commandeering infrastructure and future resource rights, and countering China in Africa. It seems inevitable that this will get bigger, longer and more complex...don't they all?
