James Eagan Holmes (born December 13, 1987) is the suspected perpetrator of a mass shooting that occurred on July 20, 2012, at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. He has no criminal record.^[3]

James Eagan Holmes was born on December 13, 1987,^[2] the son of a registered nurse and a mathematician working as a senior scientist.^[4][5][6] His father has degrees from Stanford, UCLA and Berkeley.^[7] Holmes was raised in Castroville, California, where he attended elementary school,^[8] and San Diego.^[5][9][10] He graduated from Westview High School in the Torrey Highlands community of San Diego in 2006.^[6][11][12] Holmes played soccer and ran cross-country at Westview High.^[7] He attended a local Lutheran church with his family, according to the church's pastor.^[13][14]

In the summer of 2006, Holmes worked as an intern at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies where he was assigned to write computer code for an experiment. Holmes, who was described by his supervisor as stubborn, uncommunicative and socially inept, presented his project to the other interns at the end of the internship, but never actually completed it.^[15][16]

Beginning in 2006, he attended the University of California, Riverside (UCR) and, in 2010, received his undergraduate degree in neuroscience with the highest honors.^{[17][18][19][20]} He was a member of several honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa and Golden Key.^[21] In the summer of 2008, Holmes worked as a counselor at a residential summer camp in Glendale, California, that catered to needy children aged 7–14. There he was responsible for 10 children and had no disciplinary problems.^[22][23]

In June 2011, Holmes enrolled as a Ph.D. student in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.^[24] He received a $21,600 grant from the National Institutes of Health according to agency records. The grant was from July 2011 to June 2012. Holmes also received a $5,000 stipend from the University of Colorado, Denver.^[25][26]

In 2012, his academic performance declined,^[27] and he scored poorly on the comprehensive exam in the spring. The university was not planning to expel him. However, Holmes was in the process of withdrawing from the university.^[28] Three days after failing a key oral exam at the university in early June 2012, Holmes dropped out of his studies without further explanation.^[29]

In Aurora, Holmes lived on Paris Street in a one-bedroom apartment, in a building with other students involved in health studies.^[30] In his rental application, he described himself as "quiet and easygoing".^[31] He left some digital footprints, like a university email address, an old Myspace photo^[32], a dating profile on Match.com,^[33] and a profile on Adult FriendFinder,^[34] as well as a resume at the employment website Monster.com.^[35] It was reported that Holmes was a big fan of superheroes, including Batman, and that his apartment was decorated with Batman paraphernalia.^[36]

Holmes' defense attorneys claim he was a "psychiatric patient" of the medical director of Anschutz's Student Mental Health Services prior to the Aurora shooting; however, the prosecution disagrees with that claim.^[37][38] Four days after the release of the defense attorney's motion, the judge required this information to be blacked out.^[39]

Actions prior to the Aurora shooting[link]

On May 22, 2012, Holmes purchased his first weapon, a .40-caliber Glock pistol, at a Gander Mountain shop in Aurora, and six days later a Remington Model 870 shotgun at a Bass Pro Shops in Denver. On June 7, just hours after failing his oral exam at the university,^[29] he purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P15 semi-automatic rifle, with a second .40-caliber Glock pistol following on July 6. All the weapons were bought legally.^[40] In the four months prior to the shooting, Holmes also bought 3000 rounds of ammunition for the pistols, 3000 rounds for the M&P15, and 350 shells for the shotgun over the internet.^[41][42] On July 2, he placed an order for a Blackhawk Urban Assault Vest, two magazine holders and a knife at an online retailer.^[43][44]

On June 25, less than a month before the shooting, Holmes emailed an application to join a gun club in Byers, Colorado. The owner, Glenn Rotkovich, called him several times throughout the following days to invite him to a mandatory orientation, but could only reach his answering machine. Due to the nature of Holmes' voice mail, which he described as "bizarre, freaky", "guttural, spoken with a deep voice, incoherent and rambling" Rotkovich instructed his staff to inform him if Holmes should show up, though Holmes neither made his appearance at the gun range, nor called back.^[45] “In hindsight, looking back -- and if I’d seen the movies -- maybe I’d say it was like the Joker -- I would have gotten the Joker out of it,” Rotkovich said. “It was like somebody was trying to be as weird as possible,” he said.^[46]

Aurora theater shooting[link]

On July 20, 2012, police arrested an unresisting Holmes next to his car behind the Century 16 theater, moments after the 2012 Aurora shooting, in which a heavily armed individual set off several gas or smoke canisters and then opened fire on the theater audience, killing 12 and wounding 58. The responding officers recovered several guns from inside the car and the theater. Holmes is now the chief suspect.

According to two federal authorities, Holmes had dyed his hair red and called himself The Joker.^[47] Once apprehended, Holmes told the police that he had booby-trapped his apartment with explosive devices before heading to the theater.^[10][48][49] Police later confirmed the presence of explosives in the apartment.^[50]

Detention and court appearance[link]

Holmes was initially jailed at Arapahoe Detention Center, under suicide watch.^[51] He is being held in solitary confinement to protect him from other inmates, a routine precaution for high-profile cases.^[52]

Holmes made his first court appearance in Centennial, Colorado on July 23, before Judge William B. Sylvester.^[53] He was read his rights and no bond was given. A mandatory protection order was issued by the judge. The judge appointed a public defender. Formal charges were set to be filed on July 30 at 9:30 a.m. MDT. Holmes said nothing and never looked at the judge.^[54] His appearance, which was described as "dazed"^[55] and "confused"^[56] fueled speculation about his mental state.^[57]

On July 30, Colorado prosecutors filed formal charges against Holmes that included 24 counts of first degree murder, 116 counts of attempted murder, possession of explosive devices, and inciting violence. The multiple charges expand the opportunities for prosecutors to obtain convictions. For each murder, one count included murder with deliberation, the other murder with extreme indifference.^[58] Holmes agreed in court to waive his right to a preliminary hearing in 35 days.^[59][60]

Daisy Eagan (born November 4, 1979) is an American actress.

In 1991 she won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for playing Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden. At eleven years old, she is the youngest female actress to win a Tony to date (as of 2011), and is the second youngest person to win a Tony (Frankie Michaels was ten when he won his Tony for Mame).

She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the role. She is also the recipient of the 2005 La Weekly Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her work in The Wild Party with The Blank Theater Company.

Her film work includes Losing Isaiah, Ripe and Tony n' Tina's Wedding. She has appeared on television in episodes of Without a Trace, The Unit, Ghost Whisperer, and Numb3rs, among other shows.

Eagan is an alumna of Bard College at Simon's Rock. She studied psychology and creative writing at Antioch University in Los Angeles. In 2003, she married Patrick Comer, a financial consultant; they divorced in 2006.

Charlie Parr is an American country blues musician, born in Austin, Minnesota, United States. He started his music career in Duluth, Minnesota. His influences include Charlie Patton, Bukka White, Reverend Gary Davis, and Dave Van Ronk. He plays a National resonator guitar, a fretless open-back banjo, and a 12-string guitar in the Piedmont blues style. He is married (to Emily Parr, who occasionally adds back vocals to Charlie's music) with two children.

As of May 2008, the song "1922" has been featured in an Australian and New Zealand Vodafone television advertisement. As a consequence Parr's album, 1922, was re-released in Australia on the Level 2 record label in Melbourne. In 2009, Parr toured Australia with Paul Kelly.^[1]

Several of Parr's songs were featured in the Australian drama film "Red Hill" released in 2010, including a full rendition of "Just Like Today" in the closing credits of the film.

Parr played at the 2011 Pickathon Music Festival in Oregon.^[2]

Cheap Wine is an Italian rock band from Pesaro. The name is borrowed from the Green on Red same-titled song appeared on Gravity Talks album. They take inspiration from songwriters rock like (Neil Young, Bob Dylan) as well as Paisley Underground scene with veins of southern rock.

The band released its own debut in 1997, the EP Pictures ((Toast)).

Next year the band made a choice to remain independent about sounds and to maintain the lyrics in English and so they choose the self-production.^[1]

With the help of sound technician Alessandro Castriota they published the first album A better place in 1998, that was well received on Italian music magazines and fanzines.^[2]

The next albums Ruby Shade(2000), Crime Stories(2002) (concept album about crime which was selected among the best 15 Italian albums of the year by the notable music magazine Il Mucchio Selvaggio), Moving (2004) (concept about travel with the personal Bob Dylan's cover of "One more cup of coffee") and Freak Show (2007) made the group a little legend in Italian musical underground. In 2008 the drummer, Francesco Zanotti, left and was replaced later by Alan Giannini.

In the 2009 the band published the live DVD "Just Like Bob Dylan's Blues" recorded at Brabante theatre in Urbania nel 2003. In summer they played some songs at the presentation of the new Bruce Springsteen's album Working on a Dream on Milan's Rolling Stone stage.^[3] In September a new disc: Spirits with 2 personal cover Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho & Lefty" and Dylan's "Man In The Long Black Coat", and 9 original tracks. "La buveuse" is dedicated to the same picture of painter Toulouse Lautrec. The album received very good reviews on the specialized magazines such as the "Buscadero" that elected the disc best Italian album of the year.^[4] as well as the roots-rock oriented webzine Rootshighway^[5] The national radio RAI-Radio1 made a special about Cheap Wine on Saturday night.^[6]

In October 2010 the band released the first live album "Stay Alive!", 2 discs with 21 songs of which two covers.
