Calling All Cars: History of Dallas Eagan / Homicidal Hobo / The Drunken Sailor
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role. The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station. Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker "became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation". In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay. Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, LA Confidential ...

COLORADO RAMPAGE James Eagan Holmes, 24, "The Joker" , Identified
(CBS/AP) The suspect apprehended in the mass shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater has been identified as James Eagan Holmes, 24, law enforcement sources told CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. Twelve people died in the shooting at a showing of the new Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo., early Friday morning. A law enforcement source told Orr the shooting appears to have been carried out by a lone gunman. One federal official told CBS News that at this time Holmes appears to have been "under the radar." CBS News reports Holmes doesn't appear to have a criminal record in Colorado or in San Diego, Calif., where he graduated from high school in 2006. Pentagon officials said there is no record of Holmes having served in any branch of the military. San Diego police read a statement from Holmes' California family saying that their hearts go out to those involved. They say they're cooperating with authorities in San Diego and Aurora and are trying to process everything. San Diego police spokeswoman Andra Brown said there's nothing to suggest the family had any involvement. Tom Mai, a retired electrical engineer who lives next door to Holmes' family, told The Associated Press that Holmes was a loner. Mai said he said hello to Holmes once in a while, but he seemed to be shy. The mother told Mai that Holmes couldn't find a job after graduating from a public university in California. The University of California, Riverside, confirmed to CBS News that Holmes ...

LodgeNet Channel at Hampton Inn in Eagan, Minnesota
This is a really stupid video showing the LodgeNet startup channel at Hampton Inn in Eagan, Minnesota. I thought it was kinda funny that they were advertising Nintendo 64 games (I think it was something like $6 for an hour of play) in 2011! Kinda a weird movie, but then again, so are my other videos, so this fits right in with the rest, I suppose. I hope someone will enjoy this.

This was shot almost entirely on green screen for a silly low budget. Because of the low resources, I had to continue taking on client work and I didn't get to editing until months later. What seemed relatively straightforward (everything was shot with deliberate intent) quickly turned into a post-production challenge for multiple reasons. Although I had a very clear idea of how post needed to be executed, the fact is that I had never done any of the techniques I had planned. I basically had to learn from scratch, and quick.
This went from experimental project to labor of love in a short period of time. I believed in the video itself as well as the artist, Loyale, and I was set on doing the music and the video justice.
I cut a first story edit in FCP, which was followed up by numerous green screen replacement tests in after effects. Once I nailed an initial look, I just dove in and cut the video on the fly in AE. Most of what I accomplished was just by jumping in and taking a stab at it. Most of the time I got it right. I had to, because the biggest hangup was render times. Running a maxed out Mac Pro with CS4, i averaged about 12 seconds of render time per frame. In one sequence, it took about 30 seconds per frame! I was up in my attic office editing nearly 18hrs per day (with a few days off here and there) for over a month. I'm sure that seems ridiculous and some people could surely do it faster, but the render times and hourly crashes really slowed things down.
Creatively, the biggest challenge for me was nailing a cinematic look in 3D space, while working in an After Effects 2D space. Plainly put, I have no idea how to do anything in 3D, so I basically had to come up with a bunch of tricks to simulate 3D movement and 3D tracking.
All in all, this was a great experiment. I tackled the project at a time when I felt creatively stagnant and I needed to stretch my skillset into entirely new territory. I definitely see things now that I could do better or differently, but for a project I learned how to do on the fly, I'm super pleased and think this will bode well for this new electro-pop artist.

Wild Turkey's mating - April 6, 2011 Eagan Minnesota
So, the pit bull dog goes crazy while I'm doing some office work at home. I go see what it is and immediately get my camera. These 2 full grown Tom turkeys are ganging up on this fertile female. One Tom wins out and starts to mate with her as the other one is running around them. This is like less than 3 feet away from my sliding glass door on my lower level! Of course the pit bull is an incredible hunting dog - he would rather smell the turkey poop than chase the birds.

Eagan, TN: Digging wild herbs in the Appalachian mountains
America's Most Endangered Mountains - Eagan, TN Pledge to Help End Mountaintop Removal. Visit: www.iLoveMountains.org - - - COMMUNITY STORY - - - In the Cumberland mountains of Tennessee, near Eagan, Carol Judy makes her living off the land. Far from being a traditional farmer, Judy digs for and harvests medicinal roots-- many of which are highly coveted--in the hardwood forests near her home. This way of life, practiced by Appalachian families for generations, is threatened by the mountaintop removal mining occurring near her harvesting grounds. According to Judy, the 10-mile mine site near her harvesting grounds in Clairborne County, Tenn., has not only changed the landscape directly at the mining site, but has also "disturbed the foundation of the forest." As the forest floor changes, due to blasting or flooding, the roots she harvests have begun to disappear from the places they have been growing for years. Judy harvests a number of roots including sasafrass root, wild yam, black cohash, yellowroot, goldenseal and bloodroot. Wildcrafting and herbal medicine have a long history in the Appalachian mountains and their sale has become a lucrative industry as herbal medicine becomes more and more mainstream. In addition to being a source of income for wildcrafters like Judy, the forest is also a source of ecological, historical, cultural and spiritual value. Judy laughingly refers to her home in the hills as "Daniel Boone's backyard." Indeed, the legendary frontiersman ...
