Hungary's magnificent Parliament Building
The Orszaghaz is one of the great landmarks in Budapest. This awesome building took nearly twenty years to build, and was completed in 1904. The Architect was Imre Steindl, who won a competition with his impressive Neo-Gothic design. We toured this monumental building on June 23rd, 2009. In addition to experiencing the grand interior spaces, the highlight of the guided tour was seeing the Szent Korona on display in it's place of honor under the great dome.

English Architecture: Reaching for Heaven, 1130-1300 - Simon Thurley
During the thirteenth century Jerusalem surplanted Rome as the inspiration for English architecture. Huge national wealth led to an outburst of building of great creativity and individuality. The new gothic style which emerged by the 1220s was a national style for England creating some of the most remarkable buildings in European history. Thetranscript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: www.gresham.ac.uk Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal
With it dazzling combination of blue and gold, the Basilica is a place like no other in Montreal - once seen, never forgotten. A masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture, Notre-Dame Basilica was built between 1824 and 1829. The magnificent interior in wood and the boldly modern design of the Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur Chapel, captivate hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Paintings, sculptures and stained-glass windows illustrate biblical passages as well as 350 years of parish history. In the evening a sound and light show presents the founding of Montréal and the Notre-Dame Basilica. Tourism Montreal

The Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir (nr. Llandrindod Wells)
The Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir is Grade 11* listed as one of Wales' finest example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Built in 1834 by Thomas Wilson the great Victorian improver, the house was doubled in size by the Philips family in 1869, who then added the snooker room in 1894. The architects were Poundley and Walker of Liverpool. Paul and Victoria Humpherston bought the Hall in late 1997 and spent 9 years restoring it to a building of Gothic splendour; boasting stunning interiors and fascinating collections. They have also restored 12 acres of Victorian gardens in a beautiful setting above the ruins of the 12th C "Abbey of the Long Valley. The Hall has appeared on many television documentaries on historic houses, and on lifestyles.. Their achievements have been featured on BBC "Discovering Welsh Houses" ,"My Secret Wales","Wales Today", on ITV "Wales Tonight" ,"Great Welsh Roads"and "How the other Half Lives" and on S4C. Gothic Novels (1 of 3)
Gothic fiction (sometimes referred to as Gothic horror) is a genre of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. As a genre, it is generally believed to have been invented by the English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto. The effect of Gothic fiction depends on a pleasing sort of terror, an extension of Romantic literacy pleasures that were relatively new at the time of Walpole's novel. Melodrama and parody (including self-parody) were other long-standing features of the Gothic initiated by Walpole. Gothic literature is intimately associated with the Gothic Revival architecture of the same era. In a way similar to the gothic revivalists' rejection of the clarity and rationalism of the neoclassical style of the Enlightened Establishment, the literary Gothic embodies an appreciation of the joys of extreme emotion, the thrills of fearfulness and awe inherent in the sublime, and a quest for atmosphere. The ruins of gothic buildings gave rise to multiple linked emotions by representing the inevitable decay and collapse of human creations—thus the urge to add fake ruins as eyecatchers in English landscape parks. English Gothic writers often associated medieval buildings with what they saw as a dark and terrifying period, characterized by harsh laws enforced by torture, and with mysterious, fantastic, and superstitious rituals. In literature such Anti-Catholicism had a European dimension featuring Roman Catholic excesses such as ...

Cardiff Castle-Love spoons
Mark Stacey looks around Cardiff Castle which is a medieval castle and Victorian architecture Gothic revival mansion, transformed from a Norman keep erected over a Roman fort in the Castle Quarter of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. There may have been at least two previous Roman forts on the site. The Norman keep, of which the shell remains, was constructed about 1091 by Robert Fitzhamon, lord of Gloucester and conqueror of Glamorgan. In the early 19th century the castle was enlarged and refashioned in an early Gothic Revival style for John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute by Henry Holland. But its transformation began in 1868 when John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute commissioned William Burges to undertake a massive rebuilding which turned the castle into a 19th century fantasy of a medieval palace, with a series of rooms that, perhaps, constitute the highest achievement of later Victorian Gothic Revival design. Charlie Ross looks at love spoons.
