DIS - Danish Language and Culture
Danish Language and Culture is highly recommended for all students. DIS offers regular 3-credit courses taught at levels I (fall and spring) and II (spring), and intensive 6-credit courses taught at levels I-II (fall and spring) and III-IV (spring). More advanced courses are offered for individual students. As for the language instruction, the emphasis is on everyday spoken Danish. The goal is to enable you to have small conversations in Danish with your Danish host families, Danish roommates, or friends at the 'kollegium.' A successful learning process depends on active participation -- not only in class but also outside the classroom. During your stay, you will have unique opportunities to use your Danish and to observe and reflect on different cultural issues. All of which you are encouraged to bring into the classroom discussions.

Norwegian, Danish, Swedish: #1 Language Comparison
Here I compare Norwegian (Bokmål), Danish, and Swedish using the Hakusuisha 白水社"Express" Series dialogue #1. I apologize in advance for my poor pronunciation of these languages. It would be really great if native speakers could correct me! A great resource for Germanic languages is. Alexander Arguelles whose video below about Norwegian Bokmål is one of his many language overviews. At around 2:30 he shows a diagram of the relationship between these three languages, where Norwegian shares phonology with Swedish and lexicon with Danish: "Norwegian is Danish spoken in Swedish." www.youtube.com

Trentemøller: .... Even Though You're With Another Girl (Official music video)
“... Even Though You’re With Another Girl” is the second single taken from Anders Trentemøller’s wonderful second studio-album “Into The Great Wide Yonder” which has just been released in June 2010. The new single with the beautiful vocals of Josephine Phillip (Darkness Falls, Ja Confetti) is released in September with remixes by Pantha Du Prince and Kollektiv Turmstrasse and alternative versions from Mikael Simpson (available on a limited edition 7-inch) and Anders Trentemøller.
The new music video for the new single “... Even Though You’re With Another Girl” is more like a surreal short story than a video. It is directed by Adam Hashemi, a Danish film director. The story is about a man who can‘t live with himself, thus destroying his own hopes of being happy. In the beginning we see him bringing his girlfriend to meet his parents. Mildly put, the man does not like being there, he feels overly claustrophobic. He has a hard time looking anyone in the eyes, even his girlriend who tries to be supportive nonetheless. From there on things take a more wacky twist, as the room gets filled with steam, and the man flies out the window. He then succumbs to the smoke and lets it take him on an adventure into a strange universe featuring women from the past. In the end, he ends up back in the house he grew up in, where he accidentally destroys the last bond between him and his girlfriend. He drifts away into unknown territory, probably the darker areas of his own mind. Based on a dream, the video ties the subconscious world with the very flat universe of social realism. In this world, there are no real rules of conduct, it is just visions that evoke emotions of something hidden deep within all of us. This can also be seen on the forever changing filmic language that starts off as being very normal (yet still timeless) and developing into a much more cinematic universe with elements of Fellini and Film Noir.
Furthermore, the “... Even Though You’re With Another Girl” follows it’s own structure which is very unlike the other songs you hear on the radio. The film bases its narration on that same structure, creating an almost operatic feel. All in all, this is an experiment in the art of video making, and it will be up to an audience to say whether it is a successful experiment or not.

silenc – visualization
How much of a language is silent? What does it look like when you take the silence out? Can we use code as a tool to answer these questions?
silenc is a tangible visualization of an interpretation of silent letters within Danish, English and French.
One of the hardest parts about language learning is pronunciation; the less phonetic the alphabet, the harder it is to correctly say the words. A common peculiarity amongst many Western languages is the silent letter. A silent letter is a letter that appears in a particular word, but does not correspond to any sound in the word’s pronunciation.
A selection of works by Hans Christian Andersen is used as a common denominator for these “translations”. All silent letters are set in red text. When viewed with a red light filter, these letters disappear, leaving only the pronounced text.

The Picture (ASL Version)
I have always wanted to make a music video. When I saw Darren Frazier's short ASL song in his website, I really liked his style.
Three weeks ago, I was showing off my new adaptor 35 mm to him. I told him I REALLY wanted to film music video with him. He agreed and we decided to film at the end of February. One problem, we needed an experienced deaf actress in Pacific Northwest area. I am from Vancouver, BC and Darren lives in Portland, Oregon. We couldn't think of anyone.
Fate stepped in - Darren found out that Megg Rose was coming to Portland to visit her family. We couldn't afford to miss this HUGE opportunity! She accepted the role but she had a limited availability of 8 AM - 2 PM for filming on Sunday.
We picked a duet called, "The Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow 48 hours prior to the shooting. Megg and Darren translated the lyrics from English to sign language.
I had decided not to use lighting kits, tripod, reflectors, etc. I wanted to follow the rules of Dogme95. One of my favourite films, "Celebration", is a Danish film, directed by Thomas Vinterberg. He is one of the founders of the Dogme95.
What is Dogme95?
1) Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found).
2) The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being shot).
3) The camera must be hand-held. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. (The film must not take place where the camera is standing; shooting must take place where the film takes place).
4) The film must be in colour. Special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is too little light for exposure the scene must be cut or a single lamp be attached to the camera).
5) Optical work and filters are forbidden.
6) The film must not contain superficial action. (Murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)
7) Temporal and geographical alienation are forbidden. (That is to say that the film takes place here and now.)
More information about Dogme95 at www.dogme95.dk/
We had little time for pre-production. I drove 5 hours and arrived in Portland on Saturday, Feb 2 around 9 PM (I had to work that Saturday daytime). Darren and I reviewed the translations. Oh boy, translating lyrics from English to ASL is not easy. Darren is one of the ASL masters I know (heh). We went ahead and filmed Darren starting at 3 AM until 8 AM in the Pearl District of Portland Oregon. The Pearl District has unique characteristics. Just two of us worked together without crew. The weather was so cold and my toes were frozen - thanks to my stupid summer shoes. Darren was AMAZING to work with!
Megg arrived approximately 8:30 AM and she practised her lines with Darren at Starbucks while my feet were thawing.
She is also an excellent actress. She is so sweet and a joy to work with. We finished around 2 PM.
I left Portland for Vancouver around 2:30 PM. I hadn't slept since Friday night. Five grueling hours driving back to Canada while Darren watched historic unforgettable Super Bowl game. He kept updating me via text especially during the 4th quarter. It kept me awake and alert while I drove. I arrived home safely and watched some footage. I was satisfied with the footage then went to bed at 11 PM.
That weekend was worth it!
